So now that we've had two leftist bullshit movies (that suck, like they all seem to) in a row, can we have one that calls liberals shitheads and then murders a bunch who want to instill communism?
Do I really have to point out that calling all left-wingers communists is just as silly as calling all right-wingers fascist? It's really the same straw man when it comes right down to it...
The real humor is how the country tries to fly a bird with one wing all the time.

Can't ever seem to figure out why it is crashing.

Herp Derp, I wonder.

I know it was satirical... I wanted to point out the absurdity of calling all rednecks fascist violence mongering bible thumpers.
Probably has to do with a crowd of them cheering on death panels and people dying in comas.

I get it, not EVERYONE is like that, but there has been like...0 outcry from republican leadership to say those people are batshit insane.

I expect voters not to, because we are all unique snowflakes. But the people we elect should have freaked out when people cheered 200+ executions.

Especially when it is pretty common knowledge that one of the people Perry executed was innocent.

Maybe I'm just biased because I've lived in the south. Is this sort of thing magical to people in like Maine or something? "Man that wild west! Woo!"
I'm in Maine and no, the south is not the wild west. That would be Ohio.

"Whose unfortunate flaw is that too often his films sacrifice depth in favor of heavy-handed sociopolitical message-mongering"?

I'm pretty sure Bob actually managed that line with a straight face...even when he goes on to demonstrate just HOW heavy-handed the sociopolitical message-mongering is, and then says "this isn't the deal-breaker". Why would it be? It's exactly the sort of Red State/Blue State stereotyping we hear more than occasionally from Bob himself.

Yet the spoiler-reveal which Bob says IS the deal-breaker doesn't come across as nonsensical as he makes it out to be --- as numerous police records show. Which is as far as I'm going to go in even suggesting a spoiler, myself.

So Bob gets by with the lopsided presentation of stereotypes, but balks when someone in the film doesn't react in a way he thinks should be obvious.

The one thing I agree with him on is that the change between movies does detract radically from some of the core themes that made the original a true classic. If he's that insulted by the departure, I can understand why he would react by telling everyone else to pass on the remake. But given the backhanded praise he nonetheless gives the film in passing, it sounds entirely watchable --- if you're not a big fan of the original, and are looking for a tense nerd empowerment fantasy with a satisfyingly cathartic conclusion.

I'm going to avoid it because of the heavy-handed sociopolitical commentary, which I've had a bellyful of over the last decade, but I wouldn't be averse to recommending it as a popcorn-muncher based strictly on what Bob had to say here.

Wow. Next I expect you to pop off with "some of my friends are Republicans".

Especially when it is pretty common knowledge that one of the people Perry executed was innocent.
Texas Governors don't have the power to do more than briefly delay an execution that's been ordered by the courts.

http://txexecutions.org/primer.asp

The members of the (Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles)... ha(ve) the power to recommend everything from a 120-day reprieve, to a commuted sentence, to a full, unconditional pardon... each member considers the case and faxes his or her vote to the governor. The governor may also request that the board members issue a certain ruling, but they do not have to comply... Without a court ruling or parole board recommendation, there is only one person that can stop the execution, and that is the governor, who has the unilateral authority to grant a 30-day stay. This power may be used only once per prisoner.
I know there's a strong desire by Perry's political opposition to claim he's personally responsible for every execution which has ever taken place while he's been in office, but as best that's simply someone being misinformed. At worst, it's someone lying to prod people into voting the way they'd like.

Which are you?

By the way, Bob, why are you reviewing this shit if The Tree of Life came out this week? And it won on Cannes. That's gotta be worth something.

Hmmm... It sounds like this remake is built on an archiac, polarizing premise: Lone Nerd vs Insecure Jocks.

As fun as Revenge of the Nerds was, its the twenty-first century now. Nerds ARE Jocks now. Nerjocks, if you will, can also vary in bravery/honor/intelligence. Pacifism is a non-issue for Nerjocks. I know quite a few nerjocks in the military that talk shop about physics, playtime with video games, and then drink some beers to sports after sparing with each other.

Plus making Red/Blue state analogies sounds like Hollywood trying too hard to "identify" with the audience. Guess what Hollywood, Nerjocks can vary widely in political inclinations also, so stop pandering! Yeah, methinks I'll pass on this one.

Um, thanks for the nod on Drive, I guess? I was pretty wary after you panned Conan and lauded Attack the Block, but Drive is the best non-comedy I've seen in a long time. Gosling was clearly out-acted by the inimitable Albert Brooks, but he did just what he should have.

I wont spoil it, but I was very satisfied with the ending. Anything else would have been wrong.

I finally got around to watching the 1971 Straw Dogs movie - and it is good. The thing that struck me immediately upon watching it, though, is the complete lack of empathy in all of the characters. No one at any point tries to put himself in another person's shoes, even the grotesque cat strangling is meant to prove that the bullies could get into David's bedroom, not evoke any sort of fear or anger in him or his wife. It is as if the movie was filmed by a psychopath (in the strict psychological sense [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopath]).
