Makes me with my town had more than one movie theater with only two screens... And got movies in on release date as apposed to a month after or not coming in at all. Like Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

TEAM HELL YES FTW!

Seriously, this was the one film I was waiting for above all others and I couldn't WAIT to see what Bob thought of it. My biggest fear was that he was going to report that under the glossy action it was actually a crap film, but he assuaged all my fears by reporting that under the glossy action it's even BETTER than expected! I'm seeing this as soon as I can.

I remember the trailer for this a year ago, sadly I have no one (a female) to see this with anymore :( oh well I'll see it eventually.

But seriously I'm gonna give scott pilgrim a chance and if the acting and story doesn't overwhelm the presence of Michael Ceras horrible acting. Anytime you mention it in a video I'll immediately stop watching.

No Moviebob, no! I cannot disagree more with your review of this movie. It is not deep, spiritual, OR intelligent. The line between reality and dreaming NEVER blurs. The characters are shallow, 1-dimensional, and I did not have enough time to develop any care for them. The unnesesary 1-liners that provide faux-deepness came off as REALLY annoying. See-> "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything" It comes from no where, for no reason. The action is totally detached since none of it is real, so there is zero tension. Moviebob, did we even watch the same movie? This is the nerd version of the expendables. Stupid, empty and boring.

edit: you know what? Lets go watch moviebob's expendables review but imagine that it's this movie instead. I think THAT review hits this movie far better.

I wasn't concerned about it being shallow; I was concerned about it being an overly earnest movie trying to be "deep and meaningful". I have nothing against Snyder as a director as he is competent and the so-so Watchmen adaptation's milieu of failings had nothing to do with him. However, it's obvious with this that Snyder thinks he's gone really overboard and that he should stay away from the writing table.

I have nothing against geek culture in the larger media, having liked Scott Pilgrim and being a huge fan of anime (despite way too much of it being garbage right now). Heck, I even write geek genre and am influenced by videogames, anime, and comics. But this movie just doesn't work, mostly due to Snyder's legitimate failings as a writer. I can understand wanting to like this film, but it's just not very good. At the very least you'll get some unintentional humor out of it
Couldn't agree more with these two bits. To condense, since I have a lot of really choice words to say on Sucker Punch: this movie was actually super-ambitious, and had a very good opportunity to intelligently mix high action with deep drama. The hitch, of course, was that failure to pull off any one element perfectly would bring the whole thing crashing down into an incoherent mess. The characters and script were the weak links here; the movie fell flat on its face because these elements simply didn't make anything else in the movie matter.

This of course just made it all the more frustrating to see the movie fail as hard as it did. I really wanted to like this movie; I walked in expecting a 2-hour bloodbath, got ready halfway through for a psychological thriller, and left with no satisfaction from either side, when it had so much potential to do both so well at once. And there were a lot of good bits; the pacing of the first sequence, right before Baby Doll ends up at the asylum, is brilliantly minimalistic and completely effective as exposition. It's basically a showcase of what makes Snyder good in the first place.

God, this movie was so frustrating. It was so damn close.

Edit: I meant to add that this movie did in fact have cool action bits, but they were too brief and too interwoven to the poor dialog and characters to be as cool as they could have been. More frustration.

Edit: Yikes. It is getting destroyed by critics.
About half of good movies do.

Seeing it tonight with the buddies, should be awesome.
That is just not true. Half? Really? Can you name like 10 critically panned movies that were actually good? I don't mean mixed reviews I mean panned.

Yes professionals USED to have a problem judging a film based on its intentions, but critics these days as a whole are fantastic compared to the late 90's.

I am sure critics looked at this movie expecting a thrill ride and if it got a bad score it is probably because the movie is awful...which it is.

I've wanted to see this since you're intermission on upcoming movies, and this has just confirmed that I must see it ASAP. Now if only I could finds someone to see it with. What's with the 37/100 on IMDB though? I trust you more, and will still see it, but I want to see it do well and this won't help.

I heard that this film wasn't really that good... But I love Synder's other films and I was hoping to enjoy this... and you've convinced me that I probably will. Good show Sir!

Fine. I'll finally see fucking Watchmen Bob. Despite my lack of interest in it's material. And then see this right after.

Are you ever going to add your older reviews, like Watchmen and Star Trek to the Escape to the Movies archive, btw?
Where might one find such reviews, Youtube I presume?
And watchmen is brilliant, you should watch it as soon as you can... and that comes from someone who thought the comic was a boring load of overwritten and self-overblown crap.

No matter how empowering it is for women, or how girl centric it is, it's never going to attract many with those ridiculous promos, trailers and adverts.

I understand that scantily dressed girls is a great attraction for men, but if the message is for girls, and no girls have their curiosity piqued by the promotional material, then that message or theme is wasted.

As a female, I'd like to point out my interest was definitely piqued by the trailers. The use of Led Zepplin was just.. spot on, imo. Especially when you add steampunk robot dinosaur ninja samurai on top of that.

Will this movie attract every female? Probably not. But, I'm willing to bet there's decent amount of chicks out there that see the advertising for this movie, and think, "Wow. I'm going to go and spend $9 to see this skimpily dressed chick stab giant samurai with the rest of the Pussycat Dolls, on a giant screen, while I munch on overpriced popcorn... And it's going to be awesome!"

Wait... did he just call a PG-13 movie "utterly deranged"? Wierd...

OT: It just not worth $11 to me right now, I'll rent it when it comes out on Blu-ray.

I just saw it. It was pretty decent, but I feel it could have been better. I should have expected the ending, but it seemed a bit out of place. Some people might not like it for that alone.

Frankly, it's one of the biggest piles of WTF I've ever seen. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not a good thing, either. I appreciate the art of the movie, and being an artsy type, I think I got my seven bucks worth out of the movie.

I -would- say the problem is the story's cohesiveness, but it's a movie about the dreams women in an abusive insane asylum make up to survive it. Being cohesive would've ruined it.

I dunno...maybe if it was longer? It like it was running hurdles, was way in the lead, and then totally biffed it on the last one.

I like it, and I'm going to get the Blu-ray when it comes out just so I can see the inevitable "making of" section. It's not quite Scott Pilgrim, though.
