Bob, man, ease off on the Kevin Smith hate. You're starting to sound that those people posting vague angry comments on Facebook in the hope that somebody will ask what's wrong.

I mean, the worst thing I can conjure up from Smith at this point is that I don't even know what he's been doing recently, but you have mentioned him in about half of the videos you've made in the last few months. It's getting weird.
I pretty much came to make the same observation. What's strange however, is that in Bob previous videos, on numerous occasions he actually remarked positively on Smith's back catalog yet following one film he personally strongly disliked (Red State) somehow completely invalidates all past work of the man.

I'm almost expecting him to start saying how not only does he hate Clerks, Dogma etc but everyone who enjoys them is either naive, just caught up in fandom, nostalgia or some other criticism that he hypocritically indulges himself with directors/franchises he still likes himself.

A shame to because for the most part with film, I do share many of Bob's view points but this back peddle is perplexing. I know he does change his view like with Man of Steel but that was only a couple of months after the fact, not a couple of months DECADES after the fact...

...and now in my own odd U-turn to agree with Bob: Wow, this film looks like utter dross and yes Joseph Gor... whoever that guy actually is leaves no real impression what so ever. There are so few good comedies about male friendship, less so when you also negate the "bro"-mentality" that apparently must by applied to all men in this genre. Then again, no one will remember this film in the end.

I've never heard of this movie before today, but just from that clip at the start I can tell I'd hate it.

No, he doesn't. He is literally incapable of looking at any movie outside that lens, I'm assuming it makes him feel good.

While that is certainly true, I would argue this particular installment involving big green (I'm repeating that because I actually like the way it sounds - not to be snarky), owes EVERYTHING to Pacific Rim.
I think you may be misthinking the timeline. Godzilla was well into production when Pacific Rim came out. They certainly didn't wait for Pacific Rim to be a commercial success before they started production on it. Also, the releases are only 10 months apart. Godzilla also sells itself. I would have put money on Godzilla over Pacific Rim just because Godzilla is a household name. The property awareness is off the charts and it actually transcends multiple generations. If you went back to June and did a street awareness test, you would have instant recognition on Godzilla. I literally couldn't remember that Pacific Rim was the movie with Robots and monsters until after I saw it.

Surely you could swing a "classic" review or two when it is light-on for releases or re-release blu rays/Criterion? Is some great stuff that is going begging. There was even a "Director's Cut" of Cyborg that manages to be much worse than the cut Van Damme made, but is interesting for comparison due to the overt religious references, extra gore and lots of bad language.

Hmm- I did not realize it was in production first. If that's true, you can disregard my statements involving PR setting precedent of course. Thanks for the info. Cheers!

Hehe, I'm in the UK... January is the ONLY good month for movies! We've had so far: "12 years a Slave", "Inside Llewyn Davis", "The Wolf of Wall Street", "American Hustle", etc. Last year we got "Django Unchained". The year before that, "Shame", "Martha Marcy May Marlene", "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo".

Seriously, if you want good films in January, live in the UK.
>.> cept some, to most, those films have been out in the US for a while, to the point some might be gearing up for the DVD release. Still doesn't excuse crap like this being green lit and made in the first place.

do feel sorry for Bob though you can tell this was one of those times he wished he could skip a week.

I have nothing to say about movie beyond this first I heard of it and there is not a slim chance of me ever watching it.

Wow, this does seem like a mind numbingly boring little flick.

As for Ninty, I wish I'd have lots of money to throw at them, but I just can't justify buying a new console at the moment, not with a 400+ library of PC games.
Oh god, my Steam backlog D: I find the safest policy is to just not look at it, that way it can't fill me with dread.
I find it's best to just try to whittle down the list once in a while. sometime to run it to games that you only play for 30 minutes and never playing again and other times you may find good or amazing games that make going through the list worthwhile. If never did try to reduce my backlog I may have never played max payne 1 & 2. while the viduals have aged the the gameplay is still good and it's well writing.

I would try to look at my game list and say more then max payne but steam is not wanting to open up and I can't use ctrl alt delete keys to open my task manager in order to stop a potential process that is preventing from opening. also my start menus is unusable. Stupid computer problems.

edit2
restarting fixed it

Probably because previous New Godzilla butchered its source material, so why wouldn't new New Godzilla?

Aww, I was hoping you'd talk about the movie "Her" this week. It was really good and perhaps the most awkward I have ever felt in a movie theater. Next week perhaps?

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsQqMwacZQw

If you've already talked about Her, I guess I missed it.

Don't get me wrong, I could be completely wrong. I'm just assuming they aren't casting, location scouting, shooting and post producing a movie in 10 months... though, could we really put that beyond what a studio would do to make money? Probably not. It just seems unlikely.

Oh, is that where it came from? Huh.

Well, I'm probably already in Bob's movie taste shit-list (you see, I actually like Amazing Spider-Man), but I kind of got the point of Red State. Not to say the point is particularly compelling, but the whole thing is this gonzo set of movie mad-libs all built around Smith and the Westboro Baptist Church having a bit of a grudge against each other. If anything, I was a bit surprised that the movie *looks* as good as it does, considering that Smith has never been a particularly visual guy. The plot being basically random is clearly intentional, even if that doesn't mean it works. But I don't even know if that's why Bob dislikes it, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree?

I actually assumed Bob's issue had more to do with Smith having harshly criticised film critics and Hollywood at large after Cop Out. He's been doing a whole lot of passive-aggressive stuff I don't keep track of since then, mostly as a "screw you" to the whole movie thing. I can totally see how, Bob being a film nerd with an Internet presence very much cut from the same cloth as Smith, that 180 would have felt insulting or intellectually bankrupt. Still, on that issue I don't think it retroactively harms Smith's earlier movies. They were maybe a bit overrated then, they are maybe a bit underrated now.
The thing is while he was very negative towards Red State, in the review itself he didn't seem to harbor any outright negativity toward Smith at the time and that was after Cop Out/critics fiasco. The sudden U-turn is strange given that.

However, it's fair enough if someone were to simply not like a filmmaker yet Bob seems oddly consistent on him despite Smith, regardless of one's feelings towards him, is far from a major issue with the industry. Basically I have to wonder "why him of all people?"

That's precisely the point... I was ironically pointing out how terrible the UK release schedule is in comparison to the US one (we don't get Spike Jonze's "Her" until February 14th, for goodness' sake!) by highlighting how convenient it is that we have all these great films coming out in January.

But the maxim holds up, it seems: if you have to explain the joke, it's probably not a good joke. :(

Because Monsters (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1470827/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1). What a steaming pile of garbage. The director also wrote it. So no hope there.

On the Godzilla movie: I've never been a fan of monster movies to be honest, but for some reason I think it's the helicopters in that poster. I don't know how or why, but for some reason they seem to be a sign of bad things to come.

I'm with ya Bob, I'd probably rather see the Lego Movie any thing else that came out this month too.

That awkward moment when Woody Allen's picture shows up right after reading this (http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/02/01/an-open-letter-from-dylan-farrow) open letter from his daughter who he abused where she talks about Woody Allen's picture and name showing up everywhere. Well not awkward really, it just made that letter even more heartbreaking.

I wonder where the manic pixie dream girl thing comes from since she is in so many movies. Is that really something guys want? If that is so, why are they always so reluctant to commit to her?

I'll skip this meme based trope filled movie ;)
