I really enjoyed Dredd and its pretty true to the comics although in the cityscape vista it did just look like LA that they just plonked some 200 storey skyscrapers in.
It was filmed in South Africa apparently. I thought that the cityscape was very well done, as was the whole movie. It was a nice, well done action flick that made sure all of its component pieces were well put together. It wasn't a "large" film, but then I think that worked in its favor. Karl Urban was fantastic in it. Wouldn't have even known it was him if I hadn't known before hand.

Paul Thomas Anderson: technically proficient director, absolutely too moralistic in the final accounting for me. In what universe have you made bad life choices when your life consists of banging both Heather Graham and Julianne Moore in their prime? What the hell else were you going to do if your career options were: greatest porn star ever or uneducated bus boy?

Looper: fantastic for the first third. Very good to good up until near the end. Not so thrilled with the ending.

In brief: a) unoriginal. It's Goddamn Donnie Darko again. b) Bruce Willis ceases to be future Joseph Gordon-Levitt the minute JGL meets Emily Blunt, but BW's still kicking around somehow. c) Once young Joe figures out that old Joe made the Rainmaker, why not just shoot off his own trigger finger and take a second to REMIND his older self of that little bit of logic? Or for that matter, shouldn't Bruce Willis just disappear when he realizes that? It's not like he's going to go back in time just so he can ruin the future by that point.

Good time travel movies should never have their logic bested by, "Trash can. Remember the trash can."
I haven't seen Looper, does it work if you look at it from the point of view that as soon as BW does something to change the timeline he is now living in an alternate timeline but still existing?
It's some time travel theory about alternative universes or something.

You know when you're watching an American sitcom and the wife always wants to go out and be more cultured, she wants to go and see opera's and art exhibitions and the husband wants to sit at home watching sport but gets dragged out by the bagging wife?

This seems like a movie the wife would want to see. Fuck all action and mountainous piles of character development.

I think I'll go watch the expendables 2 instead.
Oh god, if you really want an action movie don't see that sorry excuse for nostalgia bait and mediocre action. Dredd and The Raid (out now on Blu Ray) are what you should check out instead.

Already seen the raid, it wasn't warrior king or ong bak though.

Never been a dread fan, although apparently the Stallone one was awful and that is my only encounter with dread.

Thank you for getting this song stuck in my head. No, I mean it. This movie rocked.

And hey, why not this too?

WHEN YOU GOT THE GLOOOOOOOOW!
I also remember this movie, but I think the joke was actually about the title "The Master" and how our hero in "The Last Dragon" is sent to search for "The Master" and who (or rather what) it actually turns out to be. :)

...So therefore, I might watch this movie.

I knew that as soon as he was talking about iconic scenes in TWBB "I drink your milkshake" was going to happen.

Interestingly, I'm in the same situation.

I wonder how many people who get the reference would remember Lord Bowler.

Well, having finally watched The Master, all I really want to say is: not so good.

Character piece? Sure. Much of the movie works like that and it's interesting. I disagree that Dodd wanted Freddy out of the Cause, but it's not worth arguing about. The ending, though, just sputters. It's rushed and not very satisfying, and it's enough to knock the movie down a star or two. The only reason I don't consider it outright bad is because of some really good performances by Phoenix and Hoffman, but good performances aren't enough if the whole of the story is lacking.
