The premise of this movie struck me as interesting exactly because it seems like such a boring topic. One of my fave movies is Rogue Trader. I mean, that's a movie about nothing other but financial transactions plus legal mumbo-jumbo. This is about a website plus legal mumbo-jumbo.

Both movies are also based on real world events, which always adds a little spice to it for me from the reality-is-stranger-than-fiction-shaker.

It being well-received and having good acting performances throughout makes me happy indeed.

The fact that I don't care diddly-squat about Facebook doesn't mean I don't care about the story about the creators of the site. Those are two entirely different things in my mind.

Also:
So that's what happened with Spidey 4? They should make a movie about that.

Well, by that definition, I'll be back in a few years.

I'm going to go make an origin story about Jesus, where God comes down (played by Ron Jeremy) gets Mary pregnant, and she has Jesus erupting out her loins in a shower of light, already of age (and played by Christian Bale). He then spends his time helping others by battling off rogue aliens, robots, and mythological beasts, only for the Romans, who had released the horrors onto the world, to capture him. They will then torture him and eventually nail him to a cross built from cursed wood to suppress his powers, only for the wood to catch fire as his holy blood touches it. After burying him thinking he's dead, he rises up 3 days later, rains holy fire on the Romans, then disappears.
All this? True story bro, it has god blessing mary with jesus, him helping people, the romans capturing him and nailing him to the cross, and him rising from the dead.
Changing mythology to make it more palatable for modern audiences is not an out there concept. Wasn't there a film earlier this year about christian mythology? Something about angels and a diner (I didn't see it). I'd watch it same way as many Disney features that take liberties with source material, such as Hercules did with Greek mythology.

anc[is]Ok so the movie isn't about facebook, that deflated most of my initial disgust. But it's still... about facebook. Which still makes me roll my eyes. Plus the main character looks like a gigantic tool, and we are supposed to be rooting for this 'protagonist'?
Not all main characters have to be heroic.

OT: it looks great. I'm checking it out as soon as I can.

I'm not a fan of the pretentious ads and trailers for this movie (seriously, it's a movie about FACEBOOK, stop it), so I'm inclined to just wait until I can rent it. I'm not doubting it'll be a good movie, I just don't like supporting annoying ads lol.

Great movie.

I don't know why people are so against it on principle. If that were the case they wouldn't watch any war film ever.

I'd sooner dip my naughty bits in some chum and attempt to go spear hunt a shark then waste my money on this crap.
Is the reason you wont see it because it's about the creation of Facebook or because there aren't any explosions?

saw it yesterday with a few friends....was preeeeetty damn good, too. Jesse Eisenberg was born for that role, and Justin Timberlake is a perfect "asshole friend".

People who aren't seeing it because it's "a movie about Facebook"- Your lose.

Sounds interesting. The 4Chan movie would be pretty scary if they made it, hopefully they do not.

I knew someone would get picky and point this out. Loosely based on a true story is sill based on a true story. I never specified to which degree of accuracy I was relating my list of movies too. I obviously was just trying to prove a point that such a statement is ridiculous.

Based on a true story means the following:

"Oh so this happened in real life?"

"Yea!"

"Wanna make movie using that as our BASE?"

"Yea!"

"But it'll be almost completely different from the original event, but will still maintain a few key aspects of the truth, is that ok?"

"Yea!"

"Ok, let's make a movie"
Well, by that definition, I'll be back in a few years.

It's not a true story or even based on a true story.

Next time you want to try and "pwn" me maybe you should have used an example with evidence based in historical fact and not a religious text in which the stories may or may not even have happened.

Now if you had taken the same exact scenario and placed it in, let's say, they Civil War era then yes this would have been BASED on a true story.

The term "BASED on a trues story" is total BS because you can literally take a true event and change it any way you wish and still have the statement be true. I think there should be a more specific term to describe movies based in actual events...

Ahh, I believe the movie you're talking about is Legion, and I doubt that it has much of a basis in Christian mythos outside of the ideas of angels and gods (which themselves are nearly universal in many religions).

Ohoh, yet Jesus was an actual person, though I'm more than certain you lack the historical evidence to prove otherwise. And before you say anything, the hypocrisy is strong in your statement. Both examples have some basis in history AND myth.

The 300 Spartans were a tale, as the true battle had a small force of Spartans, and a larger backing of soldiers, still facing a much larger Persian threat. Spartans were heavily trained, very skilled warriors, the legend was made just to support it further.
Jesus was known as a healer, and did preach and help, far as any historian can find. People who took his beliefs and ran with them, glorified him as more than human when forming Christianity. Which, if you have never noticed during any history class, is rather common.

As for the virgin birth, it is actually possible and is called Parthenogenesis. While there hasn't been any proven recorded births from this, it has been shown possible in mammals, and even used for cloning embryos.

And, feel like mentioning this, but 300, neither the graphic novel or movie, ever tried to claim themselves as "based on a true story", that would be your fault for assuming as much.
Still with this?

Move on dude, I have.

OT: Going to see social network tonight, I have high hopes.

Edit: I really don't feel like arguing over the validity of our statements when we both seem to be making somewhat valid points, let's just forget this and be buds :D
Edit 2: And this is getting really off topic and I am not about to discuss embryology and theology in a thread about The Social Network.

Also, I'd really like to know what you thought of Let Me In, MovieBob. Did you see the original Swedish film?

Of course we have tons of people suddenly flocking to the movie because Movie Bob said so. Huh, imagine that.

As for the thread, I dislike most of the actors in the movie and completely hate Facebook. I refuse to give that worthless internet site my cash for a little history lesson of it. No, absolutely not.

I'm pretty sure Facebook isn't getting money from that movie.

Wait, I apparently like Zodiac? OH HELL NO!!! That thing, along with The Happening and Super Hero Movie, where proberly the three worst films ive ever seen. It was so boring, even if the acting was quite good.

Although I will agree with what was said about J.T. Good singer, good dancer, good actor, nice guy, cool dude. Did anyone else see when him and Avid Marian slapped each other with slabs of meat?
