That's actually really awesome... I think we should rent out 6 football stadiums to fit everyone who visits the Escapist to visit. The amount of US visitors surprised me, though. I thought there would be more UK visitors.
Well, let's see.
(i rounded these
down to the nearest million btw.)
According to a check I just did, the population of the US is now
307 million,
and the UK
61 million.
Canada 33 million
Germany is 81 million
Australia is 21 million
India is 1,139 million (... Wow.)
Netherlands 16 million
Finland 5 million
Norway 4 million (ok, 4.7. But I'm rounding down here)
Mexico 106 million
and by percentage, this site is:
US 46%
UK 11%
Canada 7%
Germany 4%
Australia 4%
India 3%
Netherlands 2%
Finland 2%
Norway 2%
Mexico 2%
That's only 83%, so that implies:
Other 17%
Now, the total population of the countries listed above is:
1.773 billion.
If we take the total population, and divide it by the populations of each country, we get a number we can use to determine the weight of each inhabitant of a given country. (I admit the rounding I did will bias a comparison between norway and finland quite a bit).
This will let us determine in which country the escapist is actually most popular relative to the number of people living there:
So, here goes:
The scaling factors are:
US: 5.775
UK: 29.065
Canada: 53.727
Germany: 21.888
Australia: 84.428
India: 1.556
Netherlands: 110.8125
Finland*: 354.6
Norway*: 443.25
Mexico: 16.726
*(Note the low populations of these countries, combined with the rounding used make the figures for them means the figures for these two countries are not very accurate compared to eachother. Their actual population sizes are much closer together than this.)
Which results in a relative popularity by country of:
(the scaling factor multiplied by the percentage of the site with users from that country)
Finland*: 709
Norway*: 886
Canada: 376
Australia: 337
UK: 319
US: 265
Netherlands: 221
Germany: 87
Mexico: 33
India: 4
*(Again, the figures for Finland and Norway are the least accurate, and most subject to rounding issues. However, this does not stop them being at the top of the list compared to the remaining countries, it just means you cannot accurately say how they compare to each-other)
So, in essence, the above list shows the the relative popularity in each country.
Norway and Finland are unusual here, and difficult to explain
Canada has the most escapist members relative to population, followed by Australia, the UK, and in last place, the US.
The Netherlands and Germany make sense in that English is not the main language spoken.
The huge lead the Netherlands has could be something to do with gaming, but is more likely to once again be a language issue; On average, the dutch are far more likely to know English than the Germans are.
Mexico and India have language issues too, but primarily these countries as a whole are relatively poor, so it's not a huge surprise that there would be far less people with internet access there.
This is especially likely in India, which, although it is having an IT boom, still has huge parts of the population that are incredibly poor.
In any event, the US is not as dominant as you might expect considering the populations of the other countries.
(oh, and Canada... Is that at all influenced by LRR? XD)
