...No...

Megaupload was taken down because it was used for lots of piracy. What's the worst this site has done? Put up game trailers? They probably have permission from the publishers for that anyway.
I'm pretty sure moviebob has permission for the trailers he uses as well. Everyone is just paranoid.

I don't know about you guys but I sure am scared. All of my ripped copies of the Pokemon Anime I've been distributing here is probably going to get the site in hot water.

/sarcasm

The Escapist is on the legal side of the fence. As someone said, we host game trailers. We likely have permission to do that seeing as it promotes their product. I'm not concerned at all.

Woah, woah. So what?

This site hosts loads of copyrighted material.

Moderator opinions has nothing to do with how much a target this site could potentially be.

Seriously doubt they will touch the Escapist. What a shit-storm it would generate..
Yeah. No-one said a thing when Megaupload, MediaFire, videobb or any of the other recently closed sites were closed. They will probably take our feelings into consideration and leave us alone so they wont have to get rude emails and discussions about how they suck in various forums all over the internet.
Noone. Said. A. Thing?
Wow, you don't hang much on forums or read articls, do you?
They are taking flak ("Badwill" if you want to be formal) for the MEgavideo-takedown, and the badwill for taking down a highly respected website like the Esacpist (a website that has won several awards) would be huge. Believe it or not, but the "government" DO have to react to peoples opinions, especially when the media get ahold of it.

That was sarcasm meant to point out that they are not afraid of a shitstorm. You might have missed the OP saying something about how even a popular site like Youtube could get shut down. If you think about it I think you will have to agree and say that Youtube is more popular than The Escapist even though this site has won awards. If we combine the user base of all the other sites that have been shut down recently there are more people using those than this site.
Clearly the government are not respecting our wishes. The fact that ACTA has been passed despite what we want the government clearly does not respect our opinion. Why would they respect our wishes to maintain a gaming society when clearly gaming is the root of all evil?

Neither videobb nor mediafire have been shut down, and he didn't say there wasn't a shitstorm when megaupload went down either, what's your problem?

Yep, but just imagine - in the world of total "copyrightism" there's no place for creation. No matter what you'll try to do there's risk that someone, somewhere already copyrighted that or something similar. That's what i'm talking about... :|
And in a world where anything goes, why be original? You can make more money printing a Bart Simpson t-shirt than making your own design.
Exactly.
Unfortunately, with every SOPA or ACTA we're closer to this reality.
Oh, I do disagree with SOPA and ACTA, don't get me wrong. Making money off a show where you showcase various pieces of art is perfectly legitimate. Copying a style of art is wrong. SOPA and ACTA don't distinguish between the two and throw them in the same bucket.

No. Copyright is an automatic right, applying to any significant works created by anyone. What it does is that if you write something, paint something, film something, etc., no one can make a copy of that without your permission... unless you denounce your copyright.

You can patent ideas, however... if you live in the United States... because the US Patent and Trademark laws are completely retarded. In most of Europe, you'll find that you can only patent specific solutions to problems, rather than the vaguer ideas behind them.

EDIT: Or more clearly, you don't get copyright for an idea. You get copyright for your expression of the idea.

Why would you ever assume this place is any more likely to get taken down by other places?
I wish people would stop going on and on about all of this shit. No, the government is not trying to oppress you. SOPA and PIPA are gone, ACTA isn't going to do much, and they took down one website. ONE. Now find something better to ***** about.

This site does not condone illegal activity. It's not going to get shut down because it simply is doing nothing wrong.
Oh the ignorance, sweet ignorance.
No illegal activities on the Escapist ? Well, i have a bad news for you.
Contrary to popular belief, the law isn't set in stone - it's set of rules that can be interpreted in different ways. Under SOPA, ACTA or similar acts and agreements one can't be sure what is allowed and what isn't.

BTW :

Welcome in the world of "I ownz, yoo pay"...
But that ruling is totally fair. I mean, I assumed the two posters were by the same creator. It's the photographer's style, it's totally fair to slap somebody else away from it.

You CAN copyright ideas. That's what the whole point of copyright is.
You forgot your sarcasm tags.

Oh wait, you were serious?

*ahem* Allegedly.

And certainly not because it was threatening the music industry with a new idea about music distribution that was due to come out aroudn a fortnight after it got shut down.

And certainly not because when Virgin tried the same thing, they were shut down by Apple.

It was most definitely Pirates.

Oooh, those Pirates, how naughty they are!

Allegedly.

I know that you're disagreeing, Zee Kaptein. :)

I'm simply pointing out, that we shouldn't relax. We don't live in exactly sanest world and the future isn't bright either. There's possibility that completely legal activities won't be considered illegal tomorrow ?

Why the hell would they shut down this website? Contributers are so hardcore anti-piracy here that its a surprise the site didnt come out in support of SOPA.
If SOPA didn't make it easy to block the Escapist from America with one complaint, they would have.

OT: I'm not concerned. End of.

There's nothing to be gained from shutting it down.

Agreed. The problem we have is that genre-savvy (so to speak) lobbyists are deceiving totally oblivious politicians to push their own agenda, and their enforcers are more like guard dogs than actual officers, and will savage whoever they're unleashed on, regardless of actual guilt.

And yes. Zee Captain. Though I feel obliged to assure you, I don't find the deviantART-style humour funny at all...but the subtle Captain is a brilliant Captain.

I doubt theres a valid reason to do it, but...

I don't see a reason why they would. As a site, we are nowhere near as high-profile as megaupload and while there may be some copyrighted material on here it is not enough for a site-wide shutdown.
Yes, ignore the Webbies that the site has won/been nominated for in the past.

Step 1: Calm Down
Step 2: stop believing in Rumors
Step 3: take what ever you read on the internet with a grain of salt.

The message on 4Chan's /b/ board explains this the best
4Chan said:

Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.
Yes I just quoted from 4Chan. I think it should apply more than just /b/ but most of the Internet.

Step 4: Do not be afraid of researching the truth behind something.
Protip: Check your sources for credibility first

Step 5: Don't repeat rumors, just facts.

Step 6: ???

Step 7: Profit
