Oh, sorry for your loss...

It is with a heavy heart that i realize that my Jarvis is that old too. i believe he'll be 6 or even 7 (curse my terrible memory)this Christmas.

My first PS2 managed to survive 10 years and maybe 2 months of frequent use.

I'm not really sure how, nothing else I've owned has really come close.

I had a playstation 1 that lived for almost 5 years, and then the little netallic ball things started falling out of it.

My first Xbox 360 lived from the release of Dead Rising until the release of Gears of War 3. Just over 5 years. It stopped reading games, and simply wanted to live out its final days without work.

that was a nice eulogy :)

in answer to your question, my gen 1 PS2 (the big brick like one). she, much like Xavier, was there for me to banish boredom when ever it reared its head. with her at my side i was able to lay low armys of monster, demons, the undead, and what ever else. she was there when i lead the demon hoard to march on Heaven (SMT: Nocturne ending), she was there when i stopped Albert Simon, Kato Masaji, and 'Lady' from bringing about the end of the world (Shadow hearts 1,2 and 3) as well as my less reputable work as a Raven (Armored Core). it was sad the day i discovered she no longer had the strength to continue (no longer reading disks) but time had finally caught up with her, it was just her time.

My oldest piece of tech would probably be the laptop I'm on right now. Got it about 7 years ago, treated it like a desktop, but it's starting to show its age and it's beyond outdated.

Thanks :) It's actually going to be kind of hard getting rid of him. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I'll save the hard drive of course so I don't lose all my saves (huh, I just realised I guess I could view that as some form of reincarnation, or something...) but as for what to with the rest. I'm not sure I could bring myself to smash it, or throw it unceremoniously in the rubbish.

Me and my brother have both got (relatively) new laptops, and my Mum has her netbook, but my Dad still uses the old family desktop which dates back to 2002. Now that is outdated. He's just the sort of guy who will literally never replace anything until it's beyond repair (although I'd argue that when it takes twice as long just to boot it up than whatever you were planning to do once you got on it because it's grown so wheezy in it's old age, then it's best for all concerned to put it out of its misery).

That's only a cycle and a half more outdated than my own laptop. :p Which isn't saying much since everything PC is outdated in 2 years, anyway. My laptop's still kickin' pretty hard, though. It only takes about...15 or so seconds to boot. Maybe not even that.

Can I call you a Brother in arms.
Yesterday after a slump that forced me away from my Xbox. One hour of play and it also got the dreaded Red Ring of Death. I'm afraid that if I send it in it may need to be replaced. I have grown attached to the Halo 3 edition. It is always weird to see other 360's because the Xbox 360 burned into my brain was that green and orange box dead center under my TV flanked by the Wii and PS3.

As for the other part of the post. I think my NES still works. it is a late top loader model. Purchased the year I was born. what has stopped it form being hooked up is a shit house that leaves no room for it amongst the clutter. Oh how I would cry form nostalgia if I could hook it up again.

I am very sorry for your loss...
I myself have never had to deal with losing an Xbox to the RRoD
*cough*
*cough*

but I understand it can be a very sad time for someone so close to their machines...

My condolences. Xavier is not alone out there.
So far I didn't have to say goodbye to any of my home computers, or consoles, with the tragic exception of a ZX Spectrum that I foolishly traded for a Commodore 64. The biggest mistake a gamer could have made...
Anyway. So I have all the machines in working order. Two times I had to address to a technician, both my PS1 and PS2 after 4-5 years of non stop gaming sessions at some point stopped reading the disks, I had the cd/dvd laser lens changed and now they are working fine. My Xbox 360 had a RROD incident last year, but after some minutes of horror it was ressurected. :) I'm a lucky bastard I guess.

I still use this 64MB flash drive to take documents to my College. It's bulky, ugly and doesn't even have anything holes I can use to strap it anywhere- but I'll use it till it dies. Should last a while; I only use it a couple times a week. How many writes do these things have again?

Hmm... the oldest piece of tech I've owned...

Well, you know those big, ugly brick gameboys? Basically one of the first gameboys ever made? I had one of those for 15 years. I got some nostalgia feelings to play it one day, so I dug it out of my draw and went to turn it on...
and it didn't turn on. Seems I accientally left the batteries in it, which after a few years of not being payed attention to decided to leak battery acid into the gameboy's surprisingly delicate hardware, completely corroding all of it's electronics and rendering it unplayable. I felt bad man - that thing had seen a lot of punishment in it's time, so seeing it die because of my forgetfulness just... cut me deep.

Thankfully Gameboy Advances can play old-school Gameboy games, but it's just... not the same. The magic's gone, and ain't no way it's ever coming back.
My brick of a gameboy died the same way. I'd taken very good care of it over the years; no scratches on the screen, the tech support sticker on the back faded by still in tact. Then I put it down one day with intentions of going back only to pick it up one day to find it inoperable with decaying batteries in the back. Though it still wasn't my first, my first one was stolen by this little girl who came to one of my sister's slumber parties when we were kids. I keep this one around just because I couldn't bare to throw it away, but I went to ebay and picked up another one for $25. It's far more beat up than the last, and I'm pretty sure it's screen is slightly on the fritz but at least I can pop in Kirby's Dreamland whenever I want to.

I have Nintendo hardware in my room dating all the way back to the NES, and all of it still functions.

    [li]N64 [/li]

    [li]Gameboy Advanced [/li]
    [li]Nintendo DS [/li]
    [li]Nintendo DS Lite [/li]
    [li]Nintendo 3DS [/li]

The DS Lite and 3DS are very recent purchases. Until the DS Lite I was using my launch day DS to play both GBA and DS games. I bought the DS Lite so I could trade between two Pokemon games, and as insurance in case my launch day DS unexpectedly craps out on me.(unlikely but luck favors the prepared, as they say) The 3DS was in anticipation for KH3d; I wasn't originally going to buy that...but then I saw an 8 minute trailer that changed my mind. (OOT, Starfox 64, and a couple of Mario games were good incentives as well)

I don't own a Wii. I won't suffer such taint in my collection.

I'm probably showing my nerd-embryo status in embarrassing fashion here, but what is a Spectrum?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX_Spectrum

It was one of the first home PC's sort of.

I have a ZX Spectrum +2, had it since 1988. It ran games on cassette.

I don't know if you have ever tried running a game from a cassette that has 2 games on one side and 2 on the other but it isn't bloody easy.

I had so much fun on that machine as a kid but also so much rage.
Awesome. I had a ZX Spectrum +2. Sweet sweet memories.

For ages the only games I owned were the original Donkey Kong, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Odd Job Eddie and Green Beret.

One day my friend came round saying he'd got a new games machine (probably a NES) and gave me a bin liner full to the brim with cassettes. It was like Christmas for me. Doubt I even played half of them in the end as not long after I was the proud owner of a second hand Master System.

That Master System and the follow up Mega Drive II should still be in my attic somewhere. They no doubt still work but haven't been used in close to 20 years. Not sure what happened to my Saturn but that was a good machine and I don't believe it ever packed in.

My collection of 360's has been less fortunate however. On number 4 at the moment and I've had them since launch.

My condolences sir. I know the feel to lose an electronic companion along my journey.

My Nintendo 64 died some 6+ years ago. I remember when we got him for christmas. He was used, but more like getting a puppy from the pound. Me and my little brother were elated. We had amazing times together. In our neglect though, he was placed with the television in the unfinished basement we used during the hot summer months. The moisture got at him and when I plugged everything and turned on the power he fried his circuits and past to the void before my very eyes. It was very traumatic.... I can't go on about this one anymore.

My 360 was the victim of the 3 light red ring of death. I sent him to a great craftsman for repair, but with no markings I'm unsure if it's the same one I got back. Wether a new friend or old, we enjoy our time together.

My Mac desktop's hard-drive bit the dust and it took a number of months before I could get it repaired due to a lack of funds and knowledge. Much WoW time was lost and my guild fell apart because I and other leadership had computer issues. It's been with us for years and still there, but it's been handed over to my sister since my purchase of my laptop. Everyone has a computer in my house now, so everyones happy.

Many great and very sad memories I've had with my electronics. The memories flood my mind.
