Ah so jokes about a subcultures choice of clothing are okay now?

Let's say it was a joke about turban's or Kippahs(you know, those Jewish hats) would that be okay with you

That's not saying I mind jokes about stereotypes (when they are funny), I was specifically talking about the hypocrisy of people who complain about stereotypes in videogames and are here laughing it up over this particular one. Any joke has a right to exist. It just comes off to me as: making a character with big boobs is wrong, but let's all laugh at these fat nerds for wearing hats
Arguably though, the Escapist has thousands of active users, how do you know that the people who complain about stereotypes in videogames are the same people who are having a joke about a stereotype in this thread? We aren't a hivemind, it's not hypocrisy for me to laugh about a silly stereotype because someone-else on this site doesn't like stereotypes.

Yes. That's right. Making fun of someone for falling straight into a stereotype is exactly the same as building up a stereotype, generalising a group that mostly doesn't act or look like that, and then making fun of them. Why, when you think about it, it's just like racism!

Seriously though, this is like the difference between thinking that all French people wear striped shirts, berets, sell onions, ride bicycles, say "Hon hon hon" a lot etc. and thinking it's funny when a French person who's wearing a striped shirt, beret and so on gets caught commiting a crime against the English.

Right. Something bad happens to a bunch of churches so we all celebrate. Maybe if I grew up in Texas I'd have a bone to pick with churches too, but right now it just looks like we're all celebrating thievery.
How the heck did you come to that conclusion? Do you not see how we are taking the piss out of the guy?

The euphoria levels...they are strong with this one!

"Ah he must be an Atheist, let's point and laugh!"
Its not that he is an atheist, basically, the whole "fedora wearing euphoric atheist" jokes came from images you can see in this very thread, several people online wear trilbies thinking it makes them look more sophisticated (it doesn't) and many of these people just happen to be atheists, they then make images trying to look intelligent, but come off as hilariously awkward.

In other words, its a joke dood.
Shoot. Looks like that went right over my head.

We're not laughing at the churches being stolen from, man. We all agree that the thief is a total asshole.
We're laughing because the thief is wearing a fedora (usually associated with obnoxious atheists, bronies, MRAs and the like).
Just clearing that up, man.
Edit: It seems a couple of other forumites have done that better than I did. So... Good show to them, I guess.
Thanks for tolerating my lapse in judgment.

Actually, we're all mocking the hell out of "Euphoric Atheists".

If you don't know what those are, then I imagine this thread is really scary and surreal.
Sure was. Thanks for clearing that up. I'll go look it up right now.

We're not mocking a subculture's clothing.

We're mocking the subculture.

And make no mistake... it's a subculture that needs some damn good prodding.

Even as a pretty argumentative atheist the whole "Eurphoric" shit is so hilarious. Being an atheist is like being a regular dude/dudette minus church. The FUN part about atheism is you dont have any random shit to obsess over so you can fill the space with love or fun or joy. Not weird euphoria over atheism and superiority. Thats weird shit.

Anyway hope this dude gets caught. I find the meme REALLY fucking funny.
Your description of atheism creates a false dichotomy that I find somewhat off putting, not saying its intentional just that annoys me. Their are more options than atheist ore having a church, their are a decent number of religions that don't require attendance in a place of worship. Their are plenty of people who believe something but don't associate with organizations. Their are also people who believe in god via many definitions, not just in the way brought up in religious texts, also agnostics.

On topic I give the guy a week before he is caught because he brags about it on the internet.

Well, true. At first, the Fedora internet thing rather put me off, I thought it was just mindless bashing of a slightly outdated but rather nice looking hat and the people who wear it. The sort of thing you'd expect the eternally vilified Jocks to do.

But when I looked in to it, well... The bashing is rather well deserved. It's not about the hats, it's about the muppets failing to wear them and how they tend to act. A nice piece of clothing is a responsibility, if you wear a waistcoat, you need to wear a proper shirt and good trousers to match. Hats work the same way.
And honestly, not the finest clothes in the world will look good if all people can remember is condecending smugness.

If you are a hat owner, be a responsible hat owner.

This whole euphoric atheist stereotype really unnerves me. Why? Because I can really see why they'd be disliked, but at the same time pretty much fit it to a tee D: Except I've never worn my fedora in public and I have a strict 'live and let live' - policy towards religion. Had I grown up in only slightly diferent circumstances, that could easily not have been the case...

So... It's just... I don't know where we stand anymore, internet. You know? Does it help if say I the excessive Dawkins / Sagan / Hawking worship bothers me as much as it does you? C'mon honey talk to me, I need to know if we can still be am item. D:
Yeah, you're fine. If you don't act superior to religious people, you're not very euphoric.
Oh thank the flying spaghetti monster. Now, back to getting out of this hot girl's friend zone...

Jokes about literally anything are ok. They're jokes.

As for the double standard, in my experience the people who complain about the big boobs are almost never the same people who laugh at fedoras. Usually two very different camps.

Thats true and I worded what I had to say extremely poorly. Forgive me I finished travelling back to university around 80 something miles of flooding and I was really tired.

I merely meant to say that to be an atheist, as opposed to an agnostic or other non organised religious person, is to embrace and believe this is our only life. Thus it makes sense to me to fill it with useful and positive emotions rather than some cold obsession with atheism making you BETTER and making the fact we have the one life the focus of the one life. Seems rather pointless. Youre right to call me out. I wont edit it though, mostly because then it might make you look silly for quoting something I "Didnt say".

Heh, fedoras.

Heh, amazing atheists.

I would type more, but going with the theme here, I'm far too agnostic to summon the energy to take a stance.

Which is possibly even worse, you joke about individual people, you never poke fun at a group that's broadly generalizing, not all people wearing fedoras are atheists and not all atheist are misogynist idiots.
I KNOW.

BUT.

On the internet, it's commonly perceived that misogynistic idiot atheists are linked to the fedora. That's who we're bashing. Not fedora wearers, not atheists, but "fedora-wearing misogynistic idiot atheists".

No one claimed to be attacking anyone else.

Wear whatever you want. Believe whatever you want. Behave how you want. However, if you join the surprisingly large group of people who choose the triple-combo of "fedora", "atheism" and "misogynistic idiocy", then we'll probably end up mocking you. Pretty simple.

Stop holding people accountable for their actions. It's basically racism.

OT: I've never seen this "Euphoria" thing before, and I am so, so glad that I have. It speaks to my very soul.

r/atheism has always been a beautiful source of endless bile and amusement.

Forgive me for my ignorance. But when did someone's choice of silly hat become associated with asshole atheists?
