Eurovision song contest? IMO none of the acts appearing have anything to do with musical talent, so no I don't watch it (only Ireland usually has some decent acts, go Ireland!). It's always Eastern European countries voting for eachother anyway, so it isn't even a fair contest. Why the Netherlands (my country) even stoops down to join it, I'll never know.
As I said, it is just like World War 1. Winning isn't what matters, it is taking part in the destruction and chaos (of music) that counts.
Yeah, maybe I would applaud our combined efforts if I wasn't nursing my collapsed eardrums...

Why do we (UK) always have to do cheesy songs that make you cringe?
Why can't it be just a generally well written song?
Because most skilled song writers are probably working for their own bands/themselves or have something of consequence to do.

I find eurovision good for a laugh (the fashion is amazing in its craziness, c'mon some of it puts miss universe to shame). Though you do get the occasional good song it is mostly bollywood grade writing and stage presence. Oh and listening to some of the poor hosts from other countries who are forced to speak in english when obviously it is not their strong suite is kind of funny.

I haven't really paid much attention since 2006 (the one with Lordi, which I was forced to watch). In fact, I couldn't even tell you who's won it since then. All I know is it doesn't involve Terry Wogan any more, and as probably the youngest TOG (look it up) in the world, that's reason enough for me to never pay attention again.

That said, I did buy the Eurovision 2006 album with all the songs from the final and semi-final, and there's some genuinely great stuff on there (Greece was particularly good, Croatia stands out just because it was barking mad). It's still on my iPod so it comes up every so often. Cheesy as hell but who doesn't like a bit of cheese now and then?

it was never about music and always about diplomacy anyway right?

i havent even heard my countries entry, it was chosen by some panel , never shown on tv afaik
we did get through to the finals

whoever takes this serious as a show for musical talent is a sad sad person. its like watching the first 2 episodes of a random X's Idol, X's got talent show

I went to a Eurovision party a couple of years ago, basically we all picked a country, dressed up representative of our country and supported them through the contest.
That year I picked Latvia, who had the best song ever:
There was only really one guy who could sing, but the song is freakin' awesome.
I didn't win (despite my awesome pirate costume) but it was really good fun nonetheless.

And regarding UKs entries, we still think that singing cheesy songs that Cliff Richard and Abba used to do will make us win. We gotta update our acts and actually put a decent performer forward. It's a shame cos most top British bands/artists wouldn't want to disgrace themselves by going on Eurovision. What happened to the spirit of competition?

Stopped watching it after Terry left. What's the point if it isn't funny?
The dude left because we lost and he got incredibly bitchy about it on air. Seriously, we deserved to lose in 2008, we had a pretty shocking entry.

I don't think Terry made it good at all. The guy was an ass. The contestants are what make it funny, in a morbidly tragic way.

What? What is this about? Link please.
It as a testament to how Europe can be at it's worst, but with music. Think of it as a cultural and musical World War 1, where every nation in Europe attempts to outdo the other in bad decisions and utter crapness and woe.

and

or (skip forward to 1:00 for the lesson in why you should blame Iceland for more than just volcanoes)...

Don't let those vids fool you, it can be really bad sometimes.
Thanks for the sauce. Sounds terrible.

I think ireland won it something like 6 times? but we we couldnt afford to host it anymore so we had to pass it on.

Its the Eurovision song contest. The UK i think try too hard to win, its about putting in funny acts and just enjoying it.

What i find funny about Eurovision is its extremely loose definition of "Europe". Isreal and Azerbajan are NOT European countries! But what is really funny is some of the acts.

Lithunia's song for 2006:

At some point some fellow spazzes about with a microphone if i remember rightly 0.o

And Finlands 2006 entry: Lordi's Hard Rock Hallelujah!

Which is a very funny and silly song- Finland has to be one of my favourite European countries.

Damn shame Wogan quit over how the Eastern Europeans all kept voting for one another- he was the only thing that seemed serious in this competition- his replacement Graham Norton won't held matters.

Personally i've always thought it would be nice, and perhaps rather funny, if there was a heavy metal version of Eurovision. This is mainly because most of the music i listen to is power metal or related to it- and a heck of a lot that is European. Europe makes a lot of good metal music. The problem is that some countries like Germany, Holland, UK, and Scandindinvia produce loads of good metal it would be a too harder a choice to assign one band to each country. Whilst other countries like Spain and France don't seem to produce any famous metal bands. I'm sure they have some good metal bands, but none come to mind.

I'm Dutch, but I hope to God the Netherlands end dead last. I don't care who wins, but I'll be happy if we end with zero points.

Maybe if we lose enough we'll give up on the whole stupid thing in the future.

You guys have not been forgiven for your 2006 entry. I mean seriously, why didn't your government intervene?

Bill Bailey and Michael McIntyre presenting it would be orgasmic.

Alestorm did a cover to that song :p

I think it would be a brilliant idea to have Bill Bailey and Micheal Mcintyre presenting the show. I think @Duskwraith is correct, we are taking it too seriously.
