in halo 3 my npc ally was driving the warthog and his favorite tactic was running headfirst into various explosives. I wish I could tell them that going in a straight line towards a wraith that is far away is not the best idea on legendary.

oh and btw gears 2 is hell when your ally is standing right next to you but refuses to help you up.

I feel your pain.
The AI only seems to utterly suck whenever it's allied to you.

I do remember being annoyed with the Fallout 3 A.I. for standing out in the open and not taking cover when I spray them with bullets. Idiots.
To be fair, that might be because taking cover behind some very common objects (cars) is considerably worse for your health than standing out in the open, mooning the enemy, and then trying to shoot them from between your legs.

In City of Heroes, allied NPCs can sometimes be more of a hindrance than help, as they try to attack everything in sight, and usually aren't that durable. Thankfully, you're rarely required to keep them alive.

A couple times in X-Com: Apocalypse my team acted like idiots. Normally the AI is great, and it works well for firefights. However, there's a suicide bomber alien rushing at a squad, so the squad takes cover instead of firing back. Alien gets in the middle of the squad, explodes, and then the ceiling falls and kills the squad (they're armored to hell, one bomb won't take em out. 10 tons of concrete, however...).

The AI try to hug the tank.
Every single time.
Especially if he is on fire.
And on Expert.
The only trouble of I've had with the AI on L4D is with the Witch. They won't sneak around her. I can take her out with no damage, but they often disturb her before I get the chance (I also have this problem with many players...)

Easy answer. I've met only one game where the A.I. was without detectable fail: Galactic Civilizations II.

Got something to complain about all the other games with an A.I.

Ever been let down by the A.I.?
yes I once played a game of dodgeball and a rather strong Russian opponent threw the "ball" with such force I saw it coming towards me the only defense i could find was a Haley Joel Osment theatrical release, the ball smashed through my DVD defense, before hitting my temple... shards of DVD imbeded in my flesh... i lay defeated, the blood slowly pulsing out of me

Oh, I have a genuine example.. Company of Heroes.

Biggest AI fail ever.. I ordered a sniper to take cover behind a formation of treelogs to snipe down an Panzerschreck-squad. He ignored all orders, stood in front of the logs, shot 3 bullets which all missed, and then the Panzersquad shot a missile right in my sniper's face..
Panzers can't even hit a tank close range, since the missiles will go retarded and fly towards the moon.

How's that for bullshit combined with worst A.I. ever?
Theres a thing called GAMEPLAY which makes the panzerschrecks miss, how much fun would it be if panzerschrecks would always hit everything in its range. Tanks would suck so badly. For the sniper thing, you probably didn't click right or the area behind the logs might have been impossible to get to.
No, I'm quite sure I ordered him (rightclicked) to cover behind the logs so he'll have cover against the targeted squad.. did not order to go him to get flanked.. And I know, it's natural they miss, but how lame is it when a panzershreck that has big trouble hitting tanks will just instantly hit a SINGLE infantry unit? I was actually pretty staggered by that.

Far Cry 2 there is NO friendly or neutral AI
Mercs 2 the faction soldiers have about 3 lines they repeat and will never stop till they die. Also, they are useless in battle.

I've found Mount and Blade's standard AI leaves something to be desired... Unarmed hostages that I've rescued should under no circumstances attempt to charge the incoming bandits. Fortunately it was a small, weak band, and I managed to cut them all down before the AI could kill itself with its suicide rush.

I've also once seen 3 L4D AIs line themselves up as a Tank charged their backs. Fortunately for me, it was during a Versus game with a lot of ragequits, so I got to view this from the eyes of said Tank. :D

Half-Life 2, I was trying to keep the idiots following me in AH#1 alive and ordered them to stand in a corner, then started taking out enemies mounted on turrets, but soon later they decided to ignore my orders and ran out in front of me to become a human piece of swiss cheese via an enemy turret they ran headlong at.

This game on insane difficulty... infuriating.

1. Dom ALWAYS runs out into the line of fire and bleeds out, so you have to run out and get yourself shot to shit to save his stupid ass. This caused me so many fails...

2. The infamous reaver/satt comm section in Desperate Stand, one of the most frustrating moments i have ever had in gaming. You repeatedly fail 20-30 times due to the incredibly slow turret trying to hit the incredibly fast revers before they blow up your base. What does Dom do? Stands next to the second turret and looks stupid.

3. Revive me... please... you're right next to me... come on... i'm nearly.. FUCK.

4. DOM... no, they have a mortar, no Dom, run AWAY from the mortar fire... away.. dammit FUCK FUCK FUCK YOU

that's very true. I think they underpower your allies, but I always noticed on Halo 2 (admittedly an earlier game with worse AI but it was one of the selling points at the time) how expendable the Marines were, even against Grunts. I used to set myself a challenge to see how many Marines I could keep alive. The max was seven at one time. Then they all got killed by one elite. Sad face.

Sheva Alomar the *****. One of the worst AIs I'd played with in a long time.

L4D AI is annoying for a different reason though. Ever tried playing as an infected against the AI? It's fucking impossible! They spot you coming through thick shrubbery a mile off and can execute a perfect headshot first time 90% of the time.
