I recently purchased my 3rd copy of GTAIV, purely as a collector (it has the original cover) and it was less than £10.
I thought I'd play it just to make sure it works and suddenly... it's been 5 hours and I don't want to turn it off.
Some of you may be aware of my utter disappointment in the game prior to this playthrough. Like many, I was put off by it's sudden turn from cartoon, OTT action into a semi-serious, even po-faced experience. There was no rampage or mini games, just the woeful decision to be bothered every twenty minutes by cousins, dates or NPC's who may or may not have something important for you to do. Sure it amounts to the same thing, but I want to go after this stuff, not be reminded that I can do it with constant phone calls.
Anyway, I don't know if it's the new HDTV, the fact that I have 20-odd speakers to fill the room with the ambient sound or that I just wasn't bothered about it this time or maybe just not playing it in 12 hour marathons a la previous GTA's but it's really grown on me.

At the moment I'm having this relationship with The Saboteur. I bought it on an impulse cause I needed something to play, but now I really enjoy skulking rooftops like a drunken Irish ninja and murdering Nazis.

Yeah, that game it a lot better than I thought it would be. I think it's underrated.

Professor Layton series. My brother got me the first one for Christmas and I thought it was going to be insanely boring but three installments later and I still love it to pieces.

Also, when I got my XBOX360 it came with Fable and Assassin's Creed, two games I didn't think I'd enjoy, but they both ended up being pretty good too.

Very similar experience with that one myself. A very WTF! moment for want of anything else and it turned out to be really very good. Great protagonist, too.

Shining Soul 2. bought it only cause my brother bought it, and many years later I still return to it every now and again to fuck around with my level cap Ninja and level cap Dark Wizard.

Metro 2033 and Minecraft even more so sum this up perfectly.

Hell, to a certain extent STALKER did this as well. I only bought it since I was buying Oblivion at the same time and wanted something I wasn't that interested in to use up the rest of the gift card. Turns out I haven't touched Oblivion in months and I know love STALKER.

I had heard BioShock was good, but was like "Yeah, it is a FPS so what?" as I was in a period of heavy RTS/RPG-playing. Then I saw the BioShock 2 Collector's Edition (With the LP) for sale at a reduced prize in May and decided to give it a shot just because it was a fancy Collector's Edition.

These days, I am in love with both BioShock games and the setting of Rapture in particular.

Batman:Arkham Asylum. I thought "It can't be all that good, it's a comic book game." How wrong I was.

When I first heard the premise behind Kingdom Hearts, I smelled suck. When the trailers came out, I saw suck. When I played the game long after it was released, I experienced awesome.

FFX, I saw my brother playing and thought "wow, that looks like crap", then one very boring day I put it on and 100 odd hours later I thought "damn, I love this game!".

Bought it again a few months ago and it hasn't lost it charm. (I haven't played in ages though, I am enjoying MP too much at the moment)

Did you get the special editions or just the plain old MGS 2 and 3? I have MGS3: subsistance, that was hard to find cheap ... I say cheap, it was £42.

Next is MGS2: substance, thats only £18 ish though.

That happened to me. I didn't think Star Wars The Force Unleashed II was going to be a good game. It was that or something else costco had, so I picked up that.

I started playing it, and beat it in under 24 hours. I'm still playing it now.

Seconded. When I first heard of Batman: AA I thought it'd end up being very boring. Repetitive environments, dull and easy looking combat, bleeh. I bought it only because I wanted a second game with my new PS3 and I had just entered a Batman fanboy period.

Fast-forward a few weeks, hell days, and boom; my GOTY 2009.

Minecraft.
Sadly, after trying it out I still can't be arsed with it. I think I've lost that childlike creativity I had when I still played with Lego's. And as Minecraft is pretty much a huge digital Lego's box I just can't do much with it.

That and, because I lack the likes of PayPal, I can't actually buy it.

Nope, never happened. I thought it might happen with Bioshock so I played through it a second time, but it didn't happen; I still thought it sucked. When I form an opinion, I tend to base it on enough that it doesn't change often.
