Ever feel sorry for the enemies you've killed in a game?

This is a good point and has nothing to do with the fact I wrote a book about AI getting self-aware and trying to talk you out of killing them...

If a game has some elements where you can choose to kill or capture (Red Dead), but other bosses or enemy you can ONLY kill, it's annoying. All or none. You should always be able to make the choice, or never.

The other one that's bizarre is when you kill an enemy, but later find out they're only wounded. Or level up forever to kill an enemy (Borderlands) only to go back to their house and find them alive and well.
I know what you mean about all or nothing, it frustrates me too. Like how you had to kill the bosses in Human Revolution. On the other hand, I think it can be used to make a specific moment more poignant, and I would point out the ending MGS3, a game that (I think) never forced you to kill anyone up to that point.

Only this one Bandit on Fallout 3, shot the poor bastard in the ass, and his head flew right off.

Dark Souls.

So many bosses there, before I started NG+ I went around killing all the NPCs.

I felt like an asshole, I honestly almost cried.

The grunts in Halo.

They are so stupid and the way they run around and whatnot waving they're arms, its like they are the 'mentally challenged' of the alien race. I sometimes wonder if they even understand they are in a war. I'm over-thinking this...

There's a mission in GTA IV where you free a man sentenced to a lifetime in prison only to kill him. The only reason for doing this is because a lousy junkie is mad at him for talking smack about him. The real kicker is that everything he said was true, yet you still have to shoot him while he's begging for his life. I really didn't like that mission.
Still not as bad as the one from San Andreas, where CJ traps a construction foreman in a porta-potty, then buries him in a hole and fills it up with cement. Just because his men were making catcalls as his sister. You know, just like EVERY CONSTRUCTION CREW EVER.

I mean, I know CJ isn't really supposed to be a NICE guy, but yeesh. That was some sociopathic Tommy Vercetti stuff right there

Freelancer, by far. There are these aliens called the Nomads, and over the course of the game, they slowly choke the governments of the sector that humanity then lives in. They do this by taking control[footnote]They attach to your spinal cord and can control your thoughts and actions.[/footnote] of powerful political figures and their subsequent militaries.

So there's this one part where you have to fight off the infected Kusari Naval Forces (think the Imperial Japanese Navy...IN SPACE!) after you kill their governor[footnote]Did I mention that you kill him with the help of George Takei? No, seriously, he's the voice of the resistance fighter who helps you.[/footnote], and you just can't help but feel sorry for them, because they're still human deep down, but you know you have to sacrifice the lives of those pilots for the rest of the human race.

As silly as it sound but I used to wonder about if those enemies fighters in UN Squadron had friends or families. I just assume they were just following orders and had no personal grudge against me (the lone jet fighter) well other than I had kill many of their comrades.

Goomba's , Seriously there just minding their own business walking left then Mario comes along and brutally squishes them into a unrecognizable paste, plus you get points for doing so.

It's horrible.. I pity the goomba's

I couldn't bring myself to kill a single person after having made this impassioned plea that they were people and not simply a means to an end. I had even spent the last several hours gearing up for a big final confrontation, but I hadn't brought any stun weapons with me.

I spent the next few hours cloak sprinting through groups, using all my energy bars to double KO them 2 at a time and strongly fighting the urge to mow them down with my battle riffle.
this, i thought killing all those innocent people who already had to suffer being driven insane was horrible, they didn't do anything and apparently once the signal was shut of they were OK. But even worse than that was the final boss fight, exactly why did i have to kill those women and did not have the option of stunning them?

Erm, no... it's usually a case of "kill or be killed", so the last thing I'm going to do is start weeping salty tears for that last enemy who just had his/her head popped.

That, and it's only a game.

On the other hand, I do feel somewhat sorry if one of my (human) allies bites the dust. It sometimes means they miss out on the rest of the level/map/mission, but then I remember that them getting splattered was probably their own fault anyway.

Dunno about guilty but how about frustrated? in MGS i spent ages sniping Wolf with a tranq rifle and then i get a cutscne with her covered in blood saying how she is lungshot then she dies. Excuse me? she's supposed to be sleeping off a massive drugs hangover or did my tranq shots all fuse together to puncture her lung?

On the original Deus Ex, mission two, I saw a kid, and I thought "Hmm, I wonder if this game lets me kill children? Only one way to find out!" So I, and I'm not proud of this, plugged him, to see if it would kill him. It did. And I felt awful, and un-installed the game, and re-installed it, to erase that from my computer. My hands still feel dirty...

Pretty much all of the enemies in Half Life and its sequels.
The head crab zombies are just normal blokes who are attacking you because they are forced to.
All of the who have been brainwashed and sent to fight for the Combine.
The Antlions, who are just protecting their young.

Wow, Valve sure makes you sympathize for every enemy.

Nah. They all have a go and get killed for messing with the wrong person. Oh, and also, ITS A GAME. So who cares. If you feel bad, reload the game and they are back alive again. :)

Big Daddies/Little Sisters. The Big Daddies aren't responsible for their actions, and the way the Little Sisters cry after their big friends are killed is just heartbreaking...
Ninja'd. I'd always save the Little Sisters as quickly as possible after I killed the Big Daddy, and I never killed a Big Daddy unless it had a Little Sister with it. After all, they wouldn't attack unprovoked. They only attack when they, or rather their Little Sister, is threatened. The fact that I was saving the Little Sisters made me feel a little better, but still...

There's also some moments in Bastion, especially the last level. I'm sure there are other games, but they don't come to mind right now.

NIER- after you've completed it once, you have to complete the second half of the game a few more times, every time you do you find out a bit more of the story, i.e. the world isnt what it seems, what or who are the shades...

Like other escapists I feel guilty killing canines and lupines!- killing the wolves and the Shade wolf Roc in Nier (plenty of howling and whining to be had), was pretty gutting, as was taking out Bleepy in the Junk Yard and the Hansel/Gretel boss.

Yes, despite being a horrible sadist.

I love slaughtering inocent peoples in their homes in Oblivion in their homes but after I always go like "What did he deserve that for, he worked hard his whole life and never harmed anyone" curse you little voice in my head.

You can simply
talk Darrow into giving you the shutdown code or hack the terminal on the front of the Hyron. Then just hide while the floors electrify then toast Zhao a few minutes later

Or be evil.
