I've been one of those "Technokids" for a couple of years now, But a couple of months ago I just started listening to rock music instead. I don't remember clearly why but when I hear techno, trance and those electric music styles nowadays I just think of them like the grownups I knew called em. I don't remember what they called it but it went somewhere along the lines of "screeching, ear hurting and really annoying sounds". I don't think that badly of it but I just can't listen to them anymore.

The strange thing is that I also used to hate rock, Hell I even listen to classical piano music now.

For the longest time when I was a silly child, I was devoted to Classical music. Then my brother showed me Apocalyptica, and since, my music interest has been an explosion. I recently finished downloading a bunch of Scatman John. The other day I got about 3 hours of The Beatles.

I used to be a big country music nerd, but then a friend told me to look up a little band from Texas I might like. Since then I've grown a very fond liking to extremely "heavy" music.

The bands name? Pantera.

I went from liking pop and rap in 5th grade to being a devoted metalhead ever since. I've loved every minute of it. convert to the brethren of real music people.

I've never been converted as such, just found new music to like. I enjoy nearly all genres and styles of music, I think other people do as well but just don't realise it.

Regarding your story of being a "technokid", When I was a young teen I use to hang with a lot of metal kids who use to take the piss out for me for my taste in electronic music even though I enjoyed metal too.

I can understand you getting sick of some music, I went on a RATM binge last week but I don't think I could stomach Zach right now.

Yep. Back in my tweens, I was a huge fan of Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and some of the rap that was popular at the time. Before then, it was mid-90s pop music. Eesh. What an improvement I've made since then.

Actually, no. I've always liked Rock, and other than grabbing a few bands here and there to add to my library, not really any major changes. I did however go through a phase of liking heavy metal, I have no idea why. I don't listen to it anymore though. Now, I choose to listen to "happier" music. I don't even like listening to Led Zeppelin anymore, I just want to drive to some relaxing and upbeat music. Classic Rock usually does that for me.

up until fifth grade, I listened to mostly mainstream punk (Green Day, Blink-182, etc). Then I discovered Radiohead And never looked back. Now, I play bass in an prog/alternative/art Rock band with a (sometimes) trombone player in it. I still listen to that early stuff for nostalgia, but I don't miss it.

I used to be a Weird Al fanatic when I was younger

Fine stuff, but I had to be weened into real music eventually

I am now a classic rock lover, and I think I'm better for it

I used to go with the flow in school. But wasn't particularly passionate about any form of music but I certainly wasn't into metal since I had no real knowledge of it. In 2000, I met a group of friends that accepted me and sort of taught me that I shouldn't worry about the opinions of others, and like what I like. Infact, they got me to be really open minded.

I got sucked into the whole nu-metal thing (Papa Roach mainly), but that was my gateway into true metal. After I got into Metallica and Dream Theater the road to awesomeness began. Never looked back since.

So I went from mainstream rap/pop/crap to metal, and I'm so damn happy that I did.

My friend's band. He's the Bassist. Look for the tall guy on the far left of the picture. I've never heard anything like them and It's just fantastic music. Otherwise I listen to a bit of everything. Some notable genres are Rock, Metal, Techno (And many subgenres), instrumental, Classical.

EDIT: Tell me what you think of Eleveneighty, I'd be interested. For me it's a pretty unique kind of music that has huge potential.

Well, my musical preferences started with Classical music, because it was shoved down my throat by my grandfather. When I was with my dad, though, I listened to the music he liked; rock. So I wound up thinking I liked classical music. After a couple years, though, I started realizing that it was excruciatingly boring. A friend at the time (not any more, because he became more and more idiotic as the years passed) was a fan of Weird Al. I started sort of being into that, but over time, I saw that it was stupid comedy. I don't like stupid comedy. I mean, some stuff I like, but very little. All that time, though, I had been exposed, during car-rides and when my dad and friends felt like jamming out (in their own way, that is, with computers and rock and roll), but I had sort of blocked it out of my head. I had only ever heard it in idle situations, so it was never really brought to my attention. Classical and Weird Al were active suggestions. Then one day, my dad downloaded a song and requested I listen to it. I heard it, and I really liked it. I don't really remember for sure, but I believe it may have been "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits. Well, I was really into that, amassed a relatively large collection from the hard drive my dad had saved every bit of music he had onto since he was a measly high-schooler. Then we moved to where we live now, and I met some kid on the bus home. Over about a year, he introduced me to Ozzy and Black Sabbath. That was good music. I still like them, but later, I was allowed by a classmate to listen to some music of his; Godsmack. So, I started becoming interested in heavier music, but still stuck with the roots of Ozzy. Just a few years prior, when I was naught but ten years of age, I was granted a computer. Namely, computers plus gaming. That led to me finding STALKER just this year. Which led me to read Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's book, Roadside Picnic, which brought Russia into my interest field. I began to research Russia. What kind of history is there? What are the religious practices there? What kind of music do they listen to there? Anything I might like? Yes. Very much so, yes. I found Aria (pyc: Ария). They are now my favorite band. They've been compared to Iron Maiden before, so I decided to listen to what Iron Maiden had to offer. Well, I liked it, but I thought their vocals were sub-par. The music was good, albeit slightly repetitive. I stuck with Aria. Then I researched Aria more. I found a connection with another band, Epidemia, (pyc: Эпидемия), another Russian metal band. So now I listen mainly to Godsmack and Aria. And I've listend to Epidemia on crappy YouTube videos, but I'm unable to find torrents for their music (I know, I'm a bastardly, dastardly pirate), which sucks, because they sound really good.

So, uh, my music history is a bit twisty and curvy.

(Also, I might be hinting at someone possibly PMing me a link to a place where I could be a bad pirate-person with Epidemia's music. 'Cuz I gots no munneyz and finding Russian albums for purchase in America will be crazy-expensive and very difficult.)

From mostly Country to mostly Techno and Jpop. I actually like a lot of music all over the board. Opera is iffy for me, but beyond that I like a little bit of everything. When the new country sound came out that was pretty much just 90's pop with the "country" theme, I moved slowly into techno. Now country is slowly moving back into the older sound, and I'm more willing to leave the station on more more than a half-second.

I grew up on pop, cheesy rock and classical music. While not all of it was terrible (MeatLoaf and Boney M are still entertaining, and Queen are kickass), most of it was.. Well, Top Ten crap. Girl/boy bands everywhere.

I got my first taste of rock when I was about 11/12. It was Linkin Park, unfortunately, but that is the only thing I will give them credit for. They got me into rock, which then got me listening to metal music. The first metal band I got hooked on was Cradle of Filth.

So yes. Even though I don't listen to those two bands any more, the turnaround in music taste was very much welcomed.

When I was much younger, I would listen to pretty much just Weird Al but when I got into my teens, I became obsesses with Classic Rock. I guess that counts as a complete conversion.
