One of the absolute great benefits of video games is that they can teach us something or make us realize something we never thought of before.

One of the most significant philosophies I've learned from a video game is from Fable. One of the Demon Doors demands you to become 100% obese in order to open it. And once you do, he says:

"...stop being a slave to public perception and treat yourself"

This is an absolute true philosophy, we are all slaves to public perception, slaves to each other because we survive on interaction with others. We always try to look "perfect" in order to catch the eye of the opposite sex in hopes of getting a date. Most of us would never dare to treat ourselves to food excessively because we don't want to become fat and unappealing, and most of us are obligated to shower everyday because most of the time telling a girl that you went without showing for just one day makes most of them go "ewww" and find you repulsive.

Another one is from KOTOR II, which i don't remember the exact wording, but Kreia states that with the Jedi, there will always be Sith, and vice versa. This definitely applies to real life as well. As sad and pesimistic as it may sound, there world will never be at peace and benevolent. Because there will always be evil and mal intentions. Same goes for the opposite, it's just impossible for the whole world to be pure evil because there will always be at least one person wanting to stand up for good and break the grip of evil.

It's amazing how so many judge video games as a waste of your time, life, and brain, when some of them can hold significantly deep ideas and philosophies that few ever grasp.

So have you ever learned something or realized something from a video game?

Through Guitar Hero I realized how awesome music can be. Before that I didn't listen to any music.

Actually, my dad really only cares for Guitar Hero(Zelda, too) because it teaches the younger generation about good music.

That we can only effectively save the damsel in distress if we eat the mushrooms.

Green ones being the most useful.

That pressing X won't make you dodge. Life has no quick-time events.

Seriously though, can't really say that I have learned anything special from video games..if you don't count the "school" games, 4th grade math and such xD

I wouldn't go as far as saying I have had an epiphany or anything life-changing like that. But I do believe that the reason I am as I am (which I like), is partly because of video games, so that's one plus.

One also strengthens ones brain in various ways. You strengthen your capability to differentiate between contrast, you improve your grammar, and, depending on which type of games you play, strengthen your overall mathematical abilities. 15 int results in 285 mana gain, and when I cast lvl 4 fireball, which requires 185 mana, I can finish him off with frostbolt lvl 3, or summeh' like that.

kthxbye

When everything is going well, you are going to have trouble soon. Very, very soon.

I'm looking at you, Warhammer 40k.

Yep.
Probably that's why everyone said GTA IV was overly serious.
It was just trying to be honest.
people dont play games for a real life interpetation of life they play them to be something more than what this reality can offer us

I learned that war, war never changes...

More importantly, I learned that I am interested in the game development industry and that I'd like to join it.

It was playing KoToR that I realized just how easy it is to become evil while fighting evil.
Specifically it was during one of Bastila's many lectures on the Dark Side where she talks about how insidious it is and how when you look at the atrocties committed by Malik and are like "I'd never do that." But then as the fight goes on you start to make sacrifices and before long you've become the thing you're fighting and you are committing similar atrocities. I can't remember her exact wording, but it went something like that. Anyway, I got to thinking about that, and I recalled some of the rather dark thoughts I've personally had, all of which were motivated with the thought of getting rid of evil, and it occurred to me how true that was.

Im fairly sure that jumping out of a helicopter at 1000 ft, surviving a crash with a taxi, blowing it to smithereens with your rocket launcher, and doing some general mass holy-shit is something more than what reality can offer ye.
Damnit, there I go defending GTA IV.
Bad, bad!
