Actually, something that just occurred to me: There are games I don't so much try not to hate as I try not to hate playing with certain other people.
For instance, I love the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja games. They're way too fun to be license games or fighting games, yet somehow are both. However, my best friend and I cannot play Storm (the current gen incarnation) together, because whoever the random character selector gives us will determine the fight, and there is never any deviation. I kick his ass in all things relevant to the individual combat, especially when I close to melee range, he is a farking god with the support abilities. Therefore, if he gets a good leader/support combo via randomizer, a la Naruto with Sasuke or Kakashi as supports, he'll break me over his knee. If I get a melee specialist, however, such a neji, he's broken over my knee. There is no suspense or test of skill anymore when the two of us sit down to play. It's gotten to the point that it is more fun for us to play the single player and pass the controller between fights than to actually play the multiplayer.
