Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Gamer, eh? I don't know that it's really necessary. Wiping my gaming memory wouldn't change the "different every time" factor of most games in my preferred genres, and losing the wonder I had for FF6 when I was 17 would just make it...well...different. And not in a good way. At 32, I'm older, more experienced, more cynical. The game just wouldn't feel right. Ditto for Chrono Trigger.

The Problem is... most of my great game experiences I collected when I was really younger, with much older technique. That should be put in concideration! If I could travel back in time (including my mind) to play those again through the eyes of a child? Yep, I would totally do it! ^^

Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie.

If I could relive those days of bright colors and music, GOD that would be awesome.

I suppose it would be interesting. But I would first have to amass a large sum of money so I can leave myself in riches after I forget the horrible things I probably had to do to get rich in the first place.

I wish I could rewipe my memory of a game every time I started a new playthrough. (RPGs, anyways)

I'd consider it, for movies, books, and games, rereading rewatching and replaying has it's charm but it's never the same as the first time you read/watched/did something truly awesome.

I could have sworn I made a thread like this before...

OT: Yes I do, just to play them again for the first time. I also want to wipe the memories of Superman 64, but for a completely different reason.

I wish I could wipe my mind of Fight Club. My dad told me that they were the same person before I saw it. I've always regretted not having that masterpiece play our for me as intended.

Assuming memory modification would be possible, I'd decline any and all such procedures on pure principle. I am who I am because of my experiences and memories of those experiences. Without a damned good reason, I would never allow my memory to be modified in any manner.

Not even if it meant rediscovering Star Control 2 and Chrono Trigger, or feeling the kind of awe I felt with Civilization I as a kid.
Way to completely miss the point and spock everything. This isn't a philosophical discussion on the ethics of technology.

I wouldn't wipe, because then I'd suck at them again :p

I didn't have it spoiled for me, playing it as I did before there was such a thing as Internet message boards full of spoilers (I didn't get a Net connection at home until 2000). That Disc One "spoiler" (that now everyone and his sister knows) was pure awesome if you didn't know it was coming.

How so? I simply have a philosophical reason to decline the use of such technology. The OP asked if we'd be willing to wipe our memories of our favourite games so as to experience them again in all their glory and to have them feel fresh. I simply said no. How is a philosophical basis for that decision any less valid than say... " because you don't know what to expect from it, and everything is so new and surprising to you."

You fail to consider tha possibly gaming for me is a continuity, with good titles leading me to finding the next one and the next one, to consider new genres and integrate the experiences gained, graphical styles met and stories told into who and what I am as a gamer. To simply remove parts of that chain would mean that who I am would change. It might affect what games I like, how I play them, how I view gaming (both computer and table/card) and so on. I simply do not view the exchange as balanced; Who I am means more to me than rediscovering some of the greatest games I've played.

This Wall-O-Text above isn't about the ethics of technology, it is about the philosophical and ethical implications of such a choice.

I'm not really all that fond of the clean-slate idea.

I love playing the game, then exploring for any new things I missed before, until finally I start playing the games for speed-run like challenges; how fast I can complete this level, how many points I can rack up on that level, how many combos I can land with this fighter character.

KOTOR.

I'd love to be able to approach it with the same wonder I did my first time through.

I recently played FF vii for the first time since it came out and maybe I killed too many brain cells in the past 12 years but it was like a whole new game I also forgot how bad the graphics are they were so realistic back then, what happened

Oh definitely.
Sometimes I'll go a good 6 months or a year without touching some of my favourite games and then pick them back up. It is almost a new experience.
I try not to think too much about it and remember what happens next, but I have, for the most part, forgotten most of the story.
