Hey what's up. I'm sure we all can relate to this. Let's say there's a game that everybody seems to hate. No matter where you go, people can't stop talking about how horrible it is. Then for whatever reason you decide to try it out. You play the game and finally say, "Hey this isn't that bad at all...actually it's pretty fun"! For me it was "Bionic Commando" for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Before I bought this game (for $10 new), I had three different game store employees on three different occasions talk me out of buying this game. I then said screw it and took it home with me, played the entire game, and overall had a pretty good time with it. Yeah it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't even close to being one of the worst games I ever played. Let me know what is your favorite "Ugly Duckling"?

Deus Ex: Invisible War - I could go on for ages about this game but in a nutshell I just got loads of enjoyment out of it whilst everyone else berated it for not being like the first

recently i would say alpha protocol. as you said about bionic commando, yeah it wasn't perfect and it had its flaws (some of which are inexplicable in today's gaming market), but none of the flaws were game breaking in my opinion.

in fact, i really enjoyed alpha protocol and would recommend it to anyone provided they knew ahead of time that it does have a few rough edges.

edit (added): and it had "boss fights" which seemed totally out of place for a game of this type.

Hmm that's difficult cause there are a lot of games I've enjoyed that other people haven't but I can always understand why they didn't.

So maybe the closest thing to that for me was Lost Planet 2. So many people call it boring, I thought the campaign was a huge improvement over the first, it was fun, had great segments and space Mexicans made everything hilarious.

The word everybody is not particularly applicable here, but the massive hatred for MW2 on here has always left me perplexed and shocked.

And, yes, I've played the PC version.

Also, the next gen Double Agent. Haven't experienced a single bug.

I thought it was pretty good. The combat was the best thing about it.

That's rather interesting since I thought the story was the best thing about it and the combat was atrocious. Even then, the team is like Charlie's Angels mixed with Final Fantasy so it was difficult to take seriously at times. But if you didn't feel anything during the 1000 words song I would be very surprised. Hence, why I liked the story more than anything else about it.

Far Cry 2

The first time through, I hated it utterly. The second time through I figured out that stealth isnt broken, it just works way better at night - so I started playing it mostly at night. You dont get to see all the nice sunny graphics but the game is way more fun as I could get much closer with a silenced pistol and do the dirty.

I guess some spanner will probably come along now and tell me how they aced the whole game with just a tooth pick during the day, but meh whatever.

Yeah, I enjoyed this game way more then people complained about it. I loved the ending.
See also: MW2. So much hate for that game, but I really enjoyed it. Great game to go online and play with your friends.

The first was a bit of a revolution, whereas the second was down-sized to fit consoles.

It'd probably be considered good if the first didn't exist, but then you've got less of a standard to compare it too.

OT: I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Enter the Matrix.

A lot of people are hating on Fable just now, with the "hurr durr haven't you learned anything from the past two games?" spiel. I loved the past two games, despite Molyneux.

Just to give you a little hope, I'm a hardcore Devil May Cry fanboy and consider that game the worst in the series by far. That said, it isn't particularly bad. I understand why some people like it. I shall not berate thee on such a trivial matter.

As for me, I don't recall any game where essentially everyone other than myself spit venomous sputum at the very mention of it. About the closest I've got to that is Metroid: Other M. I like that game quite a bit, in spite of its flaws. Hell, I loved the controls, which, along with Samus' characterization, many seem to hate with a passion.

Currently playing a game called Family Project. I've seen a lot of negative opinion on it from the English-speaking VN-playing crowd, but I'm enjoying it immensely so far.

I'm not quite to the part where the complaints seem to focus most (being a late-branching story with multiple love interests indicating not enough character focus and too much repetition), but I'm getting plenty attached to the characters already, so I'll wait to see.

You'll get no flak from me. It wasn't nearly as good as 3 or 1, naturally, but it was still a fun action game. Sure the voice acting was almost pure shit, the combo system was absurdly unforgiving, and there wasn't enough variety (or speed) in melee combat, but the gun combat was awesome, the atmosphere was pretty well-done, playing as three different people (Dante, Lucia, Trish) was cool, the music was great, and it introduced some things that later because series staples (like Fireworks, Rainstorm, wall-running, Bloody Palace mode...).

Hell, there's some things I wish would be brought back regarding Devil Trigger. I loved being able to customize my DT powers with the hearts, for one thing. For another, I loved how your melee combos actually changed when you were in demon form, and being a demon let you use some cool powers (stuff I didn't know about until I watched an LP, like Lucia's laser rain). Also, Dante's desperation mode Devil Trigger was just awesome.

does the game world time sync up with real world time? So everything would take place at night if I played it at 9:00?

ET: The Extra Terrestrial on Atari 2600.

...

Alright, alright. I'll be serious. The Fable series. I enjoyed Fable (and TLC) and Fable 2 and still play both now and then. Every gamer I know, with the exception of two, are boycotting Fable 3 due to the "suckage" of Fable 2 and the "oldness" of the original Fable.

Off-topic: 2 days. Can't wait! :D
