The obvious answer is because its so unreliable and unstable. But why is that? What does the programing do so wrong?

I actually don't dislike windows vista...
the thing is, they put in a million uneeded programs that are CONSTANTLY active, slowing down the system, along with the amount of memory the OS takes up.
The quick fix to make it work great (as I did) is to simply get rid of the stuff you don't need before you install all your stuff on it.

Eh, when I was using Vista, I never had any problems with it.
Just isn't everyone's cup of tea, so to speak.

And here I thought the reason people didn't like Vista was because it was resource intensive, had an unintuitive interface, an almost belittling security software, invasive security software, lots of needless background programs and was effectively just a beta at release. And as the cherry on top it was released with poor backwards compitability with older software.
Basically, it was the open beta for Windows 7. I still like Vista though.

I've been using Vista for 3 years now and it's going quite well, mind you I haven't used it for any high tech demanding stuff. That might be why it's still working.

I never used it. It had a tendency to crash early on, it used up more memory than XP, it was incompatible with a lot of existing programs. The security measure were too strict and it had those annoying pop-ups (those got on my tits even after the short time I used it). Though it did have a few good features, particularly in the interface.
Windows 7 is sort of Vista done right. That's why it's one of the best selling OSs.

I seem to remember it having problems early on, but it was mostly fixed as of Service Pack 2. The people that still say it sucks have probably never even used it and are just trying to look cool and edgy.

Its funny you know, UAC (those annoying pop ups) which is one of the most maligned features of Vista is one of the best steps it made. UAC goes someway to bringing Windows up to the security level of OSX/Linux, running users at the lowest level of priviledge necessary.
However, Vista is awful, I don't have sufficient technical knowledge to say where it went wrong, but XP works great and just suffers from its age. Windows 7 runs great with all the new features and accompanying resource demands as befits its age. Vista, well Vista just doesn't run well, its sluggish, unintuitive without the great aero features of 7 and really is just no better (or at least very little better) than XP.

Operating systems are made up of 100million lines of code these days. that's why they aren't perfect.
The reasons why Windows is less perfect than others can be explained through economics. Microsoft just doesn't have an incentive to make a good operating system. Windows doesn't sell because it's better than other systems. It sells because of compatibility and aggressive marketing and in some cases anti-competitive business practices.
Want 100% compatibility with proprietary Microsoft office file formats? Buy Windows.
Want DirectX games? Buy Windows.

Those incessant "Do you wish to continue" windows that popped up everywhere. Yes, Vista, I am sure I want to open the Windows folder, and I also want to delete System32. I know what I'm doing...

In the early days, there was always the issue of missing vista hardware drivers.
It made getting a setup to run smoothly a horrendous nightmare.
By the time that issue was fixed (due to all the 3rd party hardware companies being a bit slow), windows 7 had been announced.
