I would suggest Dark Souls if you aren't frustrated too fast and if you play cautious it isn't that hard - I would even say that it is more forgiving than Demon's Soul.
Oh, and you will probably get more hours out of it than you would with Batman (though it is a good game, too).

As for the multiplayer part, I don't know how it is handled by XBox Live as I played it on a PS3 and I'm still having fun with PvP.
But in general the multiplayer part in Dark Souls isn't as good as it was in Demon's Souls if you want to play co-op, otherwise it is good.

I would suggest to look up some playthroughs for Dark Souls, e.g. GetJesse's playthrough on youtube, as he didn't have any experience with the gameplay and still finished it - some others just gave up and thought it was too hard/unfair, when in fact they didn't want to learn from their mistakes.

I shall answer this anecdotally and you can make of it what you will.

Fact 1: I own both Dark Souls and Arkham City
Fact 2: I loved both Demon's Souls and Arkham Asylum and was hotly anticipating these releases.
Fact 3: I have played more than 60 hours of Dark Souls
Fact 4: I do not know where my copy of Arkham City is, and until I finish beating just one...more...boss, I don't particularly care.

I can only say that while I liked Arkham City, Dark Souls just gave me way more gameplay value. Arkham City didn't feel that appealing to me. I finished the story and put it on the shelf. Arkham City was fine, but really nothing special, and not as interesting as Arkham Asylum was. Dark Souls on the other hand just won't let me go. I want to explore everything.

Flip a coin, dear boy. It works for Two Face.

To be fair, both are good games and you won't end up regretting your purchase. However, if you're really stuck - rent them.

Basically had the exact same decision on my hands. I knew Skyrim was already a given for me and only wanted to spend money for one other game. In the end after much deliberation I went for Arkham City instead of Dark Souls and didn't regret my decision in the slightest. The game is fantastic, GotY contender for sure! Almost every critic says it's superior to its predecessor which was already an amazing game, so my advice - get Arkham City :)

Get Demon's Souls and Arkham City. I've played Demon's Souls, but not Dark Souls. I've heard from several people that the first game's difficulty is more fair (it was fair during my playthrough. No cheap deaths that I remember) than Dark Souls. You can also find Demon's Souls at a low price nowadays.

Batman Arkham City. It seems amazing from everything I've seen.
Also one major reason.
He's the Goddamn Batman. Who are you to argue.

Dude batman sucks. soooo overrated. sure it has the best melee fighting ive EVER seen in a game, but thats not enough. i finished the entire thing in one sitting, just under 4 hours. on hard.

this is the game we where told would have 30+ hours of gameplay. they really do expect you to spend 20 hours doing riddler ''challenges'' (which comes down to stand here, use each of your items till the box opens)

Dark Souls on the other hand, is a very different beast. im 60 hours in, on my first playthrough. this is a game designed to be played through 7 TIMES with increasing difficulty. waaaayyyy more bang for your buck, and deeply satisfying.....but not for the faint of heart. cant stress this enough. hands down the best game ive played on console bar nothing.

that being said, Skyrim drops in like 2 weeks. its launch day may also be the apocalypse, as the simultaneous dropping of gamers jaws the world over may fracture the earths crust and drown us all in liquid hot magma. i, for one, would die happy :)

Arkham City

Dark Souls has a fuck ton of gameplay, but atleast 40% of it will be grinding. It also becomes a real chore to keep playing a game this relentless when you have no emotional attachment to anyone or anything in it. It will ultimately leave you feeling pretty empty, it did for me anyway.

if you wait a month or so, i'm sure they will both drop down in price so they can be more affordable

I definitely recommend Arkham City, it is an insanely awesome game and very fun with lots to do. Can't say much for dark souls but for Arkham city i can definitely say it's a must buy.

I loved them both but preferred Arkham City. You'll probably get more playtime from Dark Souls but I liked the gameplay of Batman more

I've recently finished both games and you probably can't go wrong with either. Although Dark Souls is way more interesting and satisfying IMO. Arkham City was over before I realised and has some pacing problems. They are both excellent games.

I'm about halfway through both, and at the minute I'd suggest Dark Souls.
Obviously I haven't experienced the whole game, since I'm only at Anor Londo (about halfway through the game), but I have yet to experience what others are calling a 'cheap death'. Every time I have died it has been because I wasn't paying attention, and if I seem to die for no good reason I realise I have learnt something about that level/section. This learning curve greatly lengthens the game, for me anyway.
Still, I'm halfway through Batman too and I am loving it! The world is richly detailed and although kind of small, it feels deep and alive.
The choice is yours, but I suggest Dark Souls to be honest.

I have to say dark souls , i have about 150 hours of play time , and don't intend to stop till i get skyri
, it's really fun if your patient. Don't worry about dying , it's frustating for the firsy 100 times , then you get desensitise to it and you won't mind as much ... Unless you lose over 100k in souls then that hurts a bit.

I haven't played arkham city, but I can tell you arkham asylum was one of the best games I've ever played, and a tribute to all things batman.

Thing is...dark souls is also one of the best games I've ever played, and a tribute to the kind of unforgiving gameplay that seems to have been lost somewhere in the early 00's.

I'll say one thing about dark souls though, if you've been looking for a gothic, sword swinging, beast slaying RPG, preferably one that might stand a chance of scaring you, dark souls is that game. I've been looking for that game for a while, and I'm satisfied to say that in dark souls, I've found it.

But, if that doesn't catch your fancy, then go ahead and go for arkham city. Especially if you're adverse to extreme difficulty, or you're even a passing fan of ol' bats.

Dark souls has the RPG thing down. Interesting levels/bosses/gear/traps.

Batman has the action thing down. Light attack, heavy attack, repeat.

So do you want quick paced fun or a deep grind? Do you want to die 10 times in a row struggling to kill a boss so you can loot his ring? Or would you rather roam around a world button mashing clowns while laughing at the ease of it?

I definitely would go for Arkham City. It's a great game by all accounts. Dark Souls is a great game too but there are quite a few things that make it a bit more frustrating that it needs to be. I will definitely give DS a good mark for having such a cool world that links together in interesting ways. Even still I think Arkham City is a better choice!
