If the only thing a song has going for it is that it's "catchy" it's probably a shallow song. I think that truly great music is hard to find in the mainstream. There is some good stuff there, but a lot of it is just easily digestible pop hooks with a beat to dance to.
I can't think of any other art form where collaborations work the way they do. Every musician contributes to one cohesive whole, but each individual part is distinguishable and you can get a sense of each players personality and style.
And don't forget that listening to music is NOT a passive act. If you have it on as background noise while doing something else, you will be missing out on most of what is going on. To listen to music, turn off everything that chimes, clicks, or whistles. Try to pick apart out line of the song. Close your eyes and feel it.
Oh, and different music does have different levels of emotion and intellect. In music there is always a balance between the emotional and the intelligent, as well as the rhythm and melody.
