Life would not be worth living without it. Most probably my favorite form of creative expression.

I knew one person who wasn't that really into music either. I thought it extremely weird.
Music is the thing I enjoy most. More than games. More than food.

Hell, if I had to pick between music and porn I'd pick music.

Ok, it's stuff like this that makes me feel like I'm missing something. I understand that certain songs sound good or catchy, but I don't get how you get anything more than that out of a song.

Hell, that's an understatement for me. If you asked me to choose between music and sex i probably would have chose music (i listen to music alot more than i get laid, okay!). Oh and music (hip-hop actually) made my life drastically better by giving me confidence and grit at a point where i was more of a shell than a human.

OT: sounds a bit weird to me honestly, but it's nothing i have a problem with. Try listening around to find something you like.

Most things about humans follow a bell-curve distribution. Like height or intelligence. So, strength of emotional response to music is likely also one of those things and you just got unlucky?

Have you ever watched a film/TV show/read a book and thought 'Someone else just seeing this now would think it was OK, but they don't have the backstory and experience to really appreciate how much this particular thing means'? That's the difference between just recognising a good piece of music and feeling an attachment to it.

I constantly have music playing. hell, I'm off to listen to some new albums I just got.

Just listen around. You'll find a genre you enjoy eventually. I use to not be very big into music either until I found ska. Now I listen to music across all genres.

This is the song that made me serious about music. Maybe it'll do the same for you. If it's not your cup of tea I wish you luck whether you find music or not.

I thought the same but then i found some music i really loved, as a kid i was almost zealot-like in my "I DONT LIKE MUSIC" routine, until i started singing the song my dad was playing in the car in hushed whispers and he called it out on me, i was actually really embarresed because up until then not liking music was "mah thing" i guess?. glad i shook of that false notion actually.

If the only thing a song has going for it is that it's "catchy" it's probably a shallow song. I think that truly great music is hard to find in the mainstream. There is some good stuff there, but a lot of it is just easily digestible pop hooks with a beat to dance to.

I can't think of any other art form where collaborations work the way they do. Every musician contributes to one cohesive whole, but each individual part is distinguishable and you can get a sense of each players personality and style.

And don't forget that listening to music is NOT a passive act. If you have it on as background noise while doing something else, you will be missing out on most of what is going on. To listen to music, turn off everything that chimes, clicks, or whistles. Try to pick apart out line of the song. Close your eyes and feel it.

Oh, and different music does have different levels of emotion and intellect. In music there is always a balance between the emotional and the intelligent, as well as the rhythm and melody.

I actually know someone who doesn't listen to music at all. He just doesn't; he doesn't like anything.

Music is a big part of most games. When I listen to music of old SNES or PC games it is incredibly nostalgic. Warcraft 2 music for example is great, whereas the game itself doesn't entertain me nowadays.

Apart from games I also listen to "normal" music a lot.

no offense, but i just dont get people like you. my old physics teacher back in high school, despite being a genius in just about every way, also didnt care about music at all. msuic is just such a pervasive, intrusive, and universal form of art that your apathy just totally eludes understanding.

oh well. some people hate chocolate too. so there's that.

Music is the best part of my life, no contest. So hearing people say they don't enjoy music is rather odd to me. I think the reason most people assume that music is universally enjoyed is because it has played a very important role in the social development of humans. Music is one of the major defining characteristics of an era of society. Music is just everywhere, and that's probably why it's always assumed that everyone enjoys hearing it.

I'm one of the people that couldn't stand to be alive without music. I enjoy it more than videogames, books, or movies. I can understand that there are people who may not like music, but I can't for the life of me understand why. Music is so much more than just notes being played by instruments.

My friend once told me that he "didn't listen to music". That statement doesn't exist; you just think all the music you know of is bad, ergo, you haven't discovered your actual taste in music.

So Escapists, do you all listen to music? And why do you think music is the one type of entertainment 'everyone' is supposed to appreciate?
Question 1: Yes, but not often. Also, I only listen to music I know, I hardly ever experiment others.

Question 2: Because music is so common but so diverse. Everyone will hear music, and theres a chance some of the music they hear they will enjoy. One music genre =/= another music genre.

I'm always listening to music, but I know people who don't. My Grandfather and some of my uncles never have listened to music.
