I have noticed in video games and movies that many main characters end up cutting off different body parts.

[spoiler/] Saw 1: Leg is cut off, Heavy Rain: Finger is cut off, 127 hours (true story however): arm is cut off, Buried: finger is cut off[/spoiler]

So tell me friends. Why do we love dismembering so much? And what other movies, books, or games (preferably recent) do have dismembering involved?

AND NO BODY SAY DEAD SPACE!

no one LIKES dismembering. it is just an effective way of communicating pain to the viewer. the one i will always remember (apart from the best one in heavy rain) is the thumbs from the english patient. geez.

Yeah... I had to hack Fallout 3 and remove the dismembering before I was allowed to play it.

its permanent. a bullet wound heals, but a missing leg aint coming back. therefore, it has impact that other forms of bodily injury lack.

i will mention dead space, but for a different reason. because dismembering is so common in that game, it isnt nearly as intense as say heavy rain. the simple fact, excluding cinematic quality, is that the dramatic appeal of dismemberment is very much tied to its frequency. in dead space, i found the death animation where the regenerator impales you, holds you up and calmly stares at you to by much more brutal than any dismemberment in the game. that subtle, eery violence is much more intense compared to the bloody mutilation that you see so often. whereas in heavy rain, a mere finger is more intense than anything else in the game because it is a very uncommon form of violence, and so it carries much more weight.

personally, i find gears of war to be quite comical with its use of dismemberment; it reminds me of dead rising, where literal fountains of blood spew from every orifice. i suppose anything overused loses its appeal, but i just trying to say that dismemberment is all the more intense the less you see of it.

on a final note, i must express my seething anger at Zeithri for reminding me that my retarded version of jedi academy only had hand dismemberment. i regret ever watching those gameplay videos where arms and heads flew off in glorious slo mo...

You can fix that, I believe. Open up the console and type "saber_realistic_combat 1", if memory serves correctly.
