It's cool to hate Nickelback now? I knew if I stuck with it I'd be in style again at some point.
And if you do it long enough, it'll be retro and super cool!

But seriously, in the last month we've had randoms discussions about things that happened mid 2000's, what's up Escapist?

So I was walking around the bush listening to Nickelback when I remembered, that lately, hating on Nickelback seems to be a trend. Now I get why people started getting all uppity about Justin Bieber when he became famous (because he's got more money and girls than you will ever have in your life) but Nickelback has been around for ages. I thought it might be because they suddenly became popular, which is why alot of people began a phase of hating Linken Park, but I haven't heard of them standing out lately.

So did I miss something? Did the group fly to Botswana and start torching children with flame-throwers?

Or did they not choose the "fag life" and don't say "***** nigga fuck monay titties ass" in every one of their songs like alot of rappers?

So please enlighten me Escapists, why does everyone hate Nickelback all of a sudden?
It's not all of a sudden, it's been going on for like a decade now.

Second, regarding the bolded part, seriously dude? What is this, 2003 and MySpace?

If we're gonna have a discussion about not using stereotypes about musicians, how about we stay consistent, m'kay?

They're boring as hell and feel as if they have straight out of a production line at a factory. For me the most annoying part is their lyrics, it feels as if they have to rely on using the same boring rhyme scheme over and over and over instead of writing anything different, its kind of like a 12 year old kid learning poetry at school and thinking that to write a poem you just have to use rhyming.

I occasionally hear nickelback on the radio as i drive to and from school. Some days it's okay to listen, but every now and then i can't stand listening to it. Like everyone else says they are generic, to me that means okay. Not amazing and not the worst. Definitely not my favorite band to listen to. Hating nickelback is like hating justin beiber because some people think it's cool to hate for no apparent reason.

I listen to whatever I want to listen to.

I shall allow Harrison Ford to proclaim how I feel about people who have a problem with what other folk listen to.....

Nickelback isn't bad, just over-exposed. In Alberta you get to hear them every hour, on the hour, so they could be an awesome band and still get tiresome.

You include statements like these and you want to be answered seriously? And people are actually answering you seriously? Why are we humoring this person?

Fine, i'll bite. I view the hate for Nickelback like I view the hate for Comic Sans, pointless annoyance. Though I live in an area that doesn't play them anymore so I don't know how many times someone hears them on the radio. Still, it's an easy process to turn the knob right?

Maybe they're generic, but I like some of their music anyway. But hey, I like Linkin Park too...

Well if it makes you feel better OP, I enjoy both Nickelback and Linkin Park (in fact the latter is one of my favourite bands).

But going by the majority of the internet, this may just make my opinion doubly stupid and invalid.

Because it's funny?

I like Nickelback and Linkin Park too (Holla!) but I join in with the jokes from time to time. Same with Coldplay (Though I'm not that fond of their new album).

While we're on the subject, I also like Seether.

THIS is what started the Nickelback hate:

Have you been living under a rock for years? Everyone hates Nickelback. Everyone always has.

And for the record trying to take the moral high ground over rappers with the lyrics is just embarrassingly stupid:
EDIT: On second thoughts, is this a troll post? I mean really, who in real life is that oblivious? Who below the age of fifty has such an old-fashioned view of rap music?

I think they're okay.

I also think that people use the word hate too much, when they just mean dislike. I mean, hate is a very strong word and it's not like them, or any other band/musician has hurt the people saying it I would imagine. Also, if they hate "them" I think it is directed more at the music produced, I would bet the people that perform that music are nice enough people. I've never heard anything bad about them.

They are not a good band, simple as that.

Bad lyrics, bad song writing, overuse of basic chords and they attract the lowest common denominator of music consumers. The thing with Nickelback is that you can't say that they were good before they were famous either, Curb is a terrible album and everything after that has been as well. Whats even worse is that every song on a Nickelback album is either filler or designed to be a single, seriously every Nickelback album is like 70% singles and it sounds really bad because of it, no flow or governing themes and makes their albums feel really disjointed.

Same with Linkin Park, but at least they were somewhat "original" when their debut came out.

Honestly, I don't get the sense that they're disliked because they're bad, but rather that they're just so bland and mediocre that it borders on the offensive. That isn't limited to Nickelback, though, quite a lot of pop music (across every music genre) falls into that area as well.

I liked their first CD, but I was young at the time and I haven't listened to it in a long time. I dunno, I haven't liked them since Photograph. Just a super boring snooze fest of a song. This Nickelback hate is nothing recent though, people have hated them for a long time, so this isn't some cool new thing to do. It seems like I haven't heard of them much lately so maybe people are actually forgetting about them and this is a clever ploy by you to try and make them relevant again?

"Lately"? "Suddenly became popular"? "All of a sudden"?

Okay, OP, I think I've found out your problem.

You somehow managed to time-travel from 2004 all the way ahead to 2012.

I, for one, would like to study your methods and see if they can used to return to the past as well.

Nicklelback are the very definition of generic rock music.

Generic lyrics, generic sound, there's just nothing genuine about the music either, on the one hand they sing about fucking shit up, then on the other, they're saying we all need to stand together to make the world a better place.

I hate the term 'sell out', but they're right up there with Linkin Park.
"Sell Out"? Linkin Park didn't sell out. If anything they did a Radiohead and voluntarily sacrificed hugeness to do the music they want. Respected 'em more ever since A Thousand Suns (beautiful Floydesque album, btw).

OT: Nickelback are way overhated IMO. Far from the worst band around right now - just a sort of average one. I'm fine with them really, their songs are catchy an' all. Also, Rockstar has a tad more smarts to its name than people give it credit for.
So Linkin Park didn't make a track exclusively for the release of Medal of Honour?

Wait, they did ¬_¬
<link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_of_Glass>Nope. Lisa Miskovsky didn't "sell out" when she allowed EA to attach her song to Mirror's Edge, either.

In Linkin Park's case, Castle of Glass was the best part.

I like Linkin Park and Seether too! And Nickelback is... OK. I don't hate it, neither it's on my top 20 of favorite bands. But the hate surely is exaggerated.

I like "How you remind me", "Savin' me" and "Animals"

Except this isn't a case of merely licensing the music to the game.

They made it for the game.
