I find it hard to take someone who complains about people complaining seriously.
Uhh, why not?

But I agree with your point.
It's just nostalgic memories, not actual quality.
Actually, it's not. I played through Super Mario Bros. last night on my friend's Wii, and it was still one of the best games I've ever played.
Yeah, it's not always nostalgia, they don't make games like they used to.
That doesn't mean I don't like my newer consoles/games.

There are games that I played when I was five that I still love today.
I honestly believe that many (not all) of the hyped up FPS and RPGs of today will not survive the test of time.

There are more good games that were released more than two years before now then there have been released less than two years before now.

Which is to be expected, they had decades with which to make games more than two years before now.

It depends on what you grew up with. There's a reason why your parents (probably) don't listen to the same music as you do. They were born in a different time period, with different musical styles than we have today. They liked the music, and have stuck with it through their lives.

In this scenario, people grew up with the older games. Now, they look back on their golden memories and say that those games were the best, even if they aren't actually that good. It all boils down to nostalgia and memories.

I know what you mean, but I do not believe that it applies to everyone.

Well, maybe because it's fucking true?

Yeah, Fallout 2 is the pinnacle of the series.
Yeah, Mechwarrior 3 is the pinnacle of the series.
Yeah, it'd be great if they made another System Shock, or Thief or Deus Ex, that's LIKE the original, when instead I get Bioshock, a dumbed down unscary System Shock, a Deus Ex Invisible War...I'll stop.

I try to not ***** about it, but if you say I have no right to ***** about it, I disagree.

And it's not nostalgia (okay, well, maybe Fallout 2 is).

System Shock still, to this day, has no other games like it.
Deus Ex, again, is one of the best FPS/RPG games I've ever seen...And there's nothing really like it.

Farcry was incredible.
Farcry 2 is more of the same.
Crysis is more of the same with better graphics and some badass suit powers.
Crysis: Warhead is more of Crysis.

Do I like Crysis Warhead? Yeah, I do. But I'm not as wow'd as I was with Farcry.
I love Mirror's Edge.
I loved the PS2 when it came out, and I still do. I love my Dreamcast, my GC, with the same fervor that I always have.

Do I shun new systems? Of course not. But I'm not gonna buy an xbox for exclusives I don't want, or a ps3 for 2 games I want... :/

Most people are fickle, some even too stubborn to step out of their old ways, especially when it comes to nostalgia versus modern.
There are always going to be people who believe that their age was the best.
No matter how old one gets, they'll always look back and remember and tell the younger generations just how much everything has changed. Sure there are exceptions to every rule, but that's human nature.

On the other hand, you understand that adults find it funny when teenagers say how things are different for their generation and their parent's don't understand. It's almost funny the arguments that people come up with to try and convince people that their taste is invalid. It's like, I can hear you trying to generation gap me but that sort of argument doesn't stick more than any other type of appeal to popularity.

Captain Beefheart recorded most of their albums before I was born but you couldn't convince me that Linkin Park are better because they came later and sold more.

Far Cry 2 is really nothing like Far Cry. They both have large jungle environments, but I'd sooner compare FC2 to GTA3 than the original Far Cry.

They want attention. I think Yahtzee had a couple things to say about this kind of nostalgia...

no it has nothing to do with nostalgia.
games were better before they had better stories and better gameplay... all of todays games focus on nice shiny graphics or gimmics.
im calling rockband and all those games gimmicy (even though i obeses over them)
also when you look back on games you tend to remember only the really good ones. so thats why it always gives the apearance that things were better in the good ole days.

As an aside the good ole days for me are the days when women were still not allowed to vote, and being barefoot and pregnant and in the kitchen was a neccesity

Because change is never welcomed, simply 'cause it's not always well "understood". It's like moving from a country to another. You won't like it, but sooner or later you will acommodate and forget everything about the old country. It's weird I know.

When I was a kid the gamepad had one stick and one button and we were happy with that.

Really the only thing I complain about games nowadays are the prices getting more and more outrageous and downloadable expansions stemming the flow of new releases.
Other than that, we have nothing to complain about; it's never been a better time to be a gamer. And if you don't think so, download whatever retro games you want: every console has them.

One key to this is the rate of developmental changes. Back in the old days when something revolutionary was developed in gaming, it was really something big and different. Think back to the times when you saw your first FPS game. Those changes were huge. These big leaps were the great things we remember.

Now the changes are mild but constant. Slightly better graphics, slightly better acting and so on. All these changes progress the gaming industry, but in small steps. Nothing really revolutionary has come out in a while.

Last gen lot of the stuff was new and fresh so many people remember playing stuff like BF1942 or GTA3 for the first time. The games certainly aren't bad today either, but mostly they're just HD versions of last gen games with online or some other features tacked on so the "wow factor" is gone.

Every new generation has been a golden age for me. They have all provided me with hours of excellent entertainment. The old systems have that nostalgia, yes, but you'd have to be crazy to say that they provided better gameplay than what we have now. Puzzle games and platformers with the occasional (more often than not, bad) RPG compared to the endless possibilities we have now? Video gaming is only getting better.

I do actually believe that last generation was superior. It had a variety of games instead of all the shooters we've got now.
