Warhammer Online is being released by a successful MMO company, uses an IP with a massive pool of lore and is focusing on PvP more than any other aspect.

When will people realize that this is NOT Age of Conan?

Can't really blame anyone for saying 'our new game is better than WOW'.

Wow is the biggest one out there, at least in the UK/US. I know Korea has some crazy numbers on games I've never heard of. Who's going to market their game as 'Not quite as good as WOW', of course you're going to say it's better.

Of course, what they need to state clearly is WHY it is so different. Also WOW does have a huge following partly because of Blizzard taking such good care of their game (that should get me some replies, but I believe it), and also because by taking a stylised graphical look, instead of going for realism, the game can look good without needing a good gaming PC.

I think Crysis proved that if you want huge sales, in the PC market, you need to at least be able to run the game at medium on a pretty basic machine. At least in the UK, the biggest sellers I remember were The Sims, WOW, and Championship Manager and its sequels, which were basically a spreadsheet.

LoL sorry about my spelling i am bad speller :(
I am going to start by saying that you officially need to dig yourself out of a hole with me. "I am a bad speller"?

Unacceptable, there is built in spell check, if there's a red squiggly line under the word, check the freaking spelling... grrrr.

And if you are going to post, especially on such a literate forum, make the effort.

Hard returns and periods help when you are putting a lot into a post as well.

As for the thread topic: I hear this all the time, and I would really like to know who "they" are. I don't hear any developper saying they'll knock Warcraft off the top spot, ever. I hear a couple reviewers (generally poor ones) speculating the this game "might" or that it is an obvious goal of the project. But never a developer.

And it is just silly to not compare an MMO project to the leader in the genre. In a world with WoW, how does your project survive and make money? This question needs to be answered.

The title of this thread is hurting my eyes.

On topic: WoW being a kind of 'jack-of-all-trades', LotRO showed that there's room for a successful high fantasy, pure PvE MMO ('cause let's face it, the PvP's an extra in that game), so by the same logic there should be a place for a pure PvP equivalent... which is WAR.

Golly, this discussion is acronym-tastic.

I think all you grammar police need to be nice to the OP.

It's clear s/he's just pregnant. You can tell, because s/he's missed a LOT of periods.

The reason they say warhammer may actually beat WoW in sales is because Warhammer has hundreds of thousands if not millions of collecters and table-top players who could possibly by into the game.

Also the people that think WoW is original probably think The Lord of the Rings was a ripoff of it.

Warhammer won't BEAT WoW. I think Warhammer is simply the next logical evolution of WoW. It takes the things WoW does and refines them- are they similar? Yes. But Iron is similar to Steel. Warhammer promises to have a decent market share- i'm not going to make outrageous claims like it's the WoW killer or something, thats just impossible. WoW has become an international institution. I'm fond of the Warhammer universe and the direction they seem to be taking the game, refining the lessons of LOTRO and WoW- it doesn't do anything hugely original, but it does them -better- or more polished. Polish will be what decieds Warhammers fate, but I think with the built in fan base it's improbable the game will just die. Important to remember that WoW is popular in countries like China/Korea though, whilst Warhammer is primarily a western phenominon.

Unrelated Personal Wish: I hope they expand on the character customization options for Warhammer in updates. More heads, more bits, damnit!

I must point out that the chances of it dying are less in the hands of the fanbase and more in the hands of the publishers and if they decide to piss the fanbase off. Just look at SWG.

Touche sir. SWG is the perfect example of what NOT to do with a game. It should've been physically impossible for a Star Wars MMO to fail...but...EPIC FAIL.

Because of WoW's success its pretty much set the blueprints for every MMO for the next decade or more. I say let the genre rot in hell and start making games with some actual innovation.

We're not "stream of conscientious" types around here. We're more into the structure thing.

Tip: If you use Mozilla Firefox 3 it has a built-in spell checker.

And if you think I'm just one more grammar/spelling Nazi, get use to it. You will get call on it a lot 'round here.
Well, while we're correcting spelling and all:

"Stream of consciousness."

Now, I played GW, and I didn't like it because of the grinds and tactics and strategy. I'm sick of people talking about shadow form spec and ursa form spec, about doing a run, about vanquishing, about all that. That's not my kind of game. I don't feel like thinking when I'm playing an action game. I want to hit things. I hate standing there wailing on the same spell button. I know there are a lot of people that do like that, I'm just saying I don't. I'm not saying it's a bad game, I saying I don't like it.

Plus, GW and WoW isn't really a fair comparison. GW is all instances and PvP. It's not a true MMO unless you're in a town.
Guild Wars was a lot better before the achievements.

In my experience warcraft saddles the same grindcore gameplay from level 1 to epic 70 and up into raiding content. Grinding becomes more extreme the higher the level until the grind is literally an epic undertaking. Also, the age range who predominantly plays this game contain those who are repulsive and speek lik dis roflmao in your butt srsly hrd lols. I surely seek innovative and less repulsive gameplay elsewhere! I get the same results with age of conan only more realistically rendered avatars..along with suitably brutal grinding. AoC does have its merits. The game world is suitably awesome. Grand valleys with epic mountain ranges really did make me sit back and say WoW. The games NPCs are suitably vacant and shop window dummy-esque:( I guess the directional combat system in AoC is a sort of progression to realtime although realtime at the present time is out of the question for MMOs or is it?

Anyway, on topic, every time a new MMORPG comes out it is compared to WoW is because unlike other games, most people will only play one at a time (cause of subscription costs). WoW currently has a monopoly on the genre, any game that wants to encroach will have to knock WoW off it's perch.

So, comparisons will be inevitable.
I have to disagree. Even Mythic has said this. Being successful in the MMO market does not mean you need to dethrone World of Warcraft. Getting even a fraction of the people who dislike World of Warcraft or simply want to try something new could make the game financially successful.

I for one hope they both continue to do well. Competition drives and breeds innovation, which in the end is that much better for us the consumer.

I think your point would have been made a bit better if you hadn't choked the English language to DEATH as you did it. Please, please, for the love of god PLEASE pick up a grammar book, and paste your rants into microsoft word or something for a quick spell check, or let firefox do it for the love of god. I mean, I'm an awful speller, there's no doubt. But please, lease a period...once in a while? Make an attempt?

Anywho

I think WotLK is going to pretty much mangle any competition, Bliz looked at EQ's "EXPANSION EVERY MONNTTHHH" folly and corrected it, but still provides new content frequently enough to keep most of the average players interested. They release new end game content frequently enough for the omgwtfsuper-hardcore people, and introduce enough random shinies to occupy the rest of us. Warhammer, and any other MMO trying to compete with WoW is going to have to find a way to keep up with the frequency of new content Blizz has made us to expect, AND overcome the huge hurdle of "but my friends all play WoW...and we're poor and don't want to throw 60$ at a new MMO that might suck!"

From what I've seen of Warhammer, it looks...eerily like WoW. Only uglier ): Seriously, it looks like they took Blizzard's rejected graphic artists and putt hem to work. They really should have selected a more unique art style to make themselves stand out, but that's just me. Maybe they were hoping to lure people in with the comfort of familiarity.

You do realise that warhammer has had that style before warcraft was created and that warcraft was copying it right?

Indeed. Get a WH model and it looks more or less exactly like the model ingame (tho in the case of slaanesh, witch elves, harpies, etc much less nipples and breasts in WAR) WoW looks like the GW models did when it was released... so they were always going to look similar... But it gets to the point of whos copying who.

Myths > Tolkien > DnD > GW > Blizzard > GW
