Is liking a show something you can "leave"?
You can like the show, but still not want to be a part of the fandom.

I haven't left the fandom yet. I found a nice little ring of people on Deviant Art that mix Ace Combat and general war/apocalypse scenarios with MLP.
I agree. If it weren't for the community here on the Escapist, I would likely have left a fair bit ago. So finding a small group of people seems better than trying to be a part of the entire fandom.
That bit, right there. I've made a good few friends through the little sub-community that sprung up around Fallout: Equestria. We may disagree over some things, but no-one's ever actually had a falling out.
Personally, I think 'leaving' the fandom like Caramel Frappe detailed is rather... weak, and foolhardy. If your skin is so thin that you can't ignore some assholes trying to project their opinions onto others, that's really not a good sign. You've let someone else indirectly dictate what you like. Furthermore, the implication that by leaving the fandom you're somehow a better person, morally superior even, to the ones who persist is incredibly irritating.
The fandom is far too large for it not to sub-divide into camps with different opinions, and I for one don't allow the squabbles that inevitably take place faze me. I tolerate the opinions different to mine, disregard the troublemakers and enjoy what I want to enjoy. Something I think more than a few people in this thread need to learn.
So caramel frappes personal reason to leave is weak? And that she feels relieved that she doesn't have to out up with something that was bothering her means she's now irritating? Buck up and grow some skin?
Love and tolerate indeed. People have personal reasons to do things, and judging them like you are doing is rather... Weak, and foolhardy.
I see this opinion punted around often enough to be annoyed with it, and if you's actually read my post rather than simply leaping at the opportunity to attack me, you would have seen that I wasn't attacking Frappe so much as using that post as an example. Suddenly, disliking the behaviour of a few louts in the fandom goes from something that really should be ignored to some huge drama. There is always an underlying tone of moral superiority, that the fandom isn't worth a jot anymore, and more fool the people who stayed.
I know that the examples Frappe used were dredged up from the very bowels of Internet discourse; DeviantArt comments and the like. Not exactly a place you'd want to be going at all. And I find it very frustrating to see misinformed mindsets being used like this. The community, by and large, is a good place to be, and if you are going to let the vocal minority get to you, let the people who you'd rather not associate with dictate what you can and can't enjoy, then yes, I do take a disparaging view of that. The only one looking foolhardy here is you.
I read your post, and I stand by what I said. You are judging people for not conforming to your way of dealing with problems. Telling everyone to get a thicker skin or to grow a pair might work for you, but it doesn't work for everybody. And if theybfeel relieved of a burden by quitting the community, more power to them. Why should you be irritated that someone is happy? If someone feels that strongly about something, then they should have every right to feel the way they do, even ifnitnis, in your words, misinformed.
A few rotten apples spoil the bushel for some people.
Well, yes. I am being too harsh in this. But I stand by this - I hate seeing someone leave a group, any group, for personal reasons, and try and make out it was something more. That's what irritates me; not that someone is happier for leaving a community, but rather than saying "it just doesn't reflect what I want in that community any more" they paint it as some noble gesture, with that group now irreversibly declined in its morals.
If you listen to Caramel's post, it's almost as if the entire fandom is now some snarling beast that attacks anything at the slightest provocation, including itself. Contrast that to the bronies still in the fandom who have posted here about how, inevitable assholes aside, the community is still a pretty alright place.
Sure, a few rotten apples can spoil the bushel for you, but don't pretend the bushel's spoiled for everyone, nor that those whose appreciate the unspoiled remainder are themselves rotten (Jeez, that's a hell of an analogy.)
