I played the trial for EVE twice. The first time, I hated it from the bottom of my very soul, but I was bored one day and tried it again, finding it quite enjoyable until my new, giant ship blew up, and my trial ended. I've been meaning to actually buy an account for a long time, but I need to spend my money on things like food these days. :|

I stopped playing the game when I realized that it is the furthest thing from the leizzez-faire capitalism it believes it has. Since the developers create every part of the game for people to use, it's like being the subject in a world where God certainly exists and can create unannounced changes, throwing off all illusion of player control.

Also, running the virtual business with no benefit made me wonder why I wasn't spending my time making a REAL business where I actually see my hard work go somewhere. I would have liked Eve if it was more fun. The incentive of business was a fun aspect, but it was the only one, and thus I felt that with the removal of its veil, the perception of the game was reduced to nil.

I still play what would be considered 'casual' right now (couple hours a week) while I'm taking a semi-break. You can do just fine with tech 1 gear putzing around doing whatever, but if you want to move up to the fancier ships and equipment it definitely takes a good bit of dedication (currently training for a carrier; 182 days from now till i can use it and use it well).

I'm currently doing the same, as work has got pretty chaotic. I'm in it for the long haul, and will hopefully see some big improvements once I get back into Eve properly.

I played the 21-day trial, and found that it was mildly enjoyable, just not worth monthly fees. The combat wasn't exciting, the difficulty difference between NPC ships and human players was too great, and that lack of manual pilot (or at least my not being able to find it) was the deal breaker. A manual pilot option (or at least an obvious switch to activate it) would have been so much better.

I attempted to play, as it was one of the few MMO's I could play on my mac. The first day, the software broke and it took the rest of my 14 day trial to try to get it to work again. Reinstalling did nothing. It left a sour taste in my mouth. It seemed like it could have been fun.

I laughed at the "does that count" posts.

I tried Eve online's trial. I wasn't a fan of it, but I do like what they've done with the "in space" atmosphere. Possibly a little more polish along the lines of a different leveling system and less professions to choose from would make me like it better.

The combat was fun. I liked the dogfights. Kind of reminded me of X-Wing from back in the day.

I played it. Sadly it couldn't keep me interested, I felt too lost a lot of the time, and I also felt like it was too much of a setback when I lost my ship and all the gear I had on and in it. I do miss the people that I played with. I sometimes consider going back just to play with them, but I don't think I will.

I played Eve for a few years, and retired recently with a Cap Ship capable Caldari pilot (~40 million SP) The tipping point for me was realizing that, even on the evenings where you'd go out spoiling for a fight you might have one or two skirmishes in the space of a few hours. Once I got my Chimera, all I ever did in a battle was pop out sentries and dump shields on our primary. I was never asked to hot drop and never was I forced to spider tank in one of those things, mostly because there are so few capital shield transfer arrays in any fight. Still, I never heard an apoc player complain when I gave them shields or an Archon player whine about my power transfers.

I'd start playing again only if people I knew started up again. I'd also probably stick with Assault Ships since the PVE was so miserable by the end that I couln't bear to do it any more after I finally amassed the cash for a carrier.

I played it for about a year or so. Around the time I quit I had accululated some 700 billion ISK and 5 outposts. My "dicking around" ship was a heavily modified Rokh, but I commanded a Leviathan during raids.

I tried a trial account a few months ago because I thought it would be my thing. I loved games like Elite and its' squeal Frontier. After spending over 24 hours (or one day) letting it update (then update again)) - I was losing the fun, before I played the game.
Going into the game it was indeed large, but going from A to B was the biggest challenge, whilst some things are easy enough o figure out there seems to be a whole deeper complexity there that wasn't explained [well] in any simple immersive terms.
I wasn't pvp'ed at all so I didn't have a gripe about that, but the interface really needs me to set up 2 screens to enjoy it, one isn't enough. I never strayed out too far from the starting point and there was no real storyline feel to it. I don't want to go to a forum everyday to have to understand a game, nor do I want to go to the website to see their news.

I have been tossing about giving it a try again, but I figure it would be a waste of time anyways.

Funny that there's a 'does that count' troll-tribe running around the forum. Is it a running gag or something? Thanx for the serious replies though.

The thing that kept me playing EVE for a while was the thought that if i trained uber skills that the game would become easier somehow, but that's not the case :p
The example of a big ship being overtaken by a smaller one (piloted by a focused player and with the right equipment) is one of many things that can happen.

I played it for a nice little while, got to flying a Raven... which curiously turned out to be worse against enemy battleships than my Ferox had been - one of those bizarre situations that only makes sense in a game universe, where bigger missiles do less damage against smaller ships, rather than vaporising them instantly. Then I got the bill for my time and reckoned that life would be easier and cheaper with a free to play space sim.

My major gripe with the whole thing was the almost complete lack of player skill involved - you just had to wait a few months and grind for cash and hey, new ship and gear. The whole thing plays like a real time strategy, but where you only control a single unit, with a single specialism - it just seems a bit limiting when you step back for a minute and actually look at what you've spent your time doing :/

Just curious why are so many people put on probation for their posts here? Some of them could warrant a warning, but some of them were fairly reasonable. Sounds like someone who can put us on probation likes Eve.

I played the trial for Eve and I thought it was alright, but I wasn't really entertained, I didn't really feel like I was playing a game and had trouble enjoying it.
