WHAT? A politician is blaming a form of entertainment/art/media for societies ills? Wow that's new, I'll be sure to keep up with the meaningful and constructive developments Mr Smith no doubt has in the pipeline. After all, the alternative is he's simply rattling the cages of middle England to ensure their votes before dividing his time between scamming expenses and blaming the general air of craptitude in the country on the previous administration. Politicians have done that thousands of times in the past, so when you think about it, the odds of it happening AGAIN are slim to none, surely...

I bet that Conservatives won't do much of anything about games apart from talk just like Labour didn't. Video games are a money making export industry and while they might not do anything to actually protect it they will not actually try to dismantle it as both parties are ideologically "business" parties. They will just make noises for conservative Daily Mail readers about how society is breaking down, standards are falling and they need to stop the rot. This guy might even be less "noisy" than Keith Vaz.

Iain Duncan Smith? Who is he!? He's noone, for God's sakes, and I hope his misinformed, biased and hateful nonsense is scratched from the ether before these prats get in any position of power.

Wait, I'm confused...why are you all in an uproar?

From my viewpoint he doesn't appear to be attacking video-games at all, rather he's attacking parental attitudes towards games, such as parents buying GTA for their children that quite clearly should be playing them...

Why all the knee-jerk abuse towards someone that hasn't even insulted gaming?

I think that the bigger issue at hand with children playing videogames is the lack of intellectual or critical thinking stimulus present in a lot of popular games; it's easy to imagine how frequent exposure to mind numbing, repetitive action can stunt the growth of childrens' minds.

This is spreading, first Australia and now England will have a potentially anti-videogame politician, hopefully England has something simmilar to the good ol' first amendmant, which basically says its illegal to ban anything.
Thank God (of War) we have that safety net here in the States, no matter what Jack Thompson says.

Right, he attacks SINGLE PARENTS AS WELL AS GAMERS?

Fuck him, nothing wrong with single parents. -Personal raegggg-

I really hate this country, if I can I'll try to move out, but really, it seems everyone over the game playing age (if there is one) attacks video games as the next media Satan, I guess in 10 or 20 yaers things might start to really calm, but it'd hate to wait that long before we stop getting attacked.
What are you talking about? Single parents are the worst for kids. Especially the moms who want a kid so bad that they go and get pregnant on purpose without a dad around. A kid needs both parents for a balanced upbringing, and I bet you'd have about half the chavs around if they had that growing up.

It sounds like he skirted over the drinking problem to talk about games and single parents.

No one wants to admit it in government, but drinking is actually the main problem with Britain, no one seems willing to address it because they're all too busy being pissed and pretending to represent us.

If perhaps we promoted a more French attitude to drinking, we might have less problems.

If people actually thought games were a threat in any way at all, they would be gone, first amendment or not.

OH NO! MICHEAL ATKINSON MUST BE QUARANTINED NOW! WITH FLAMER THROWERS IF NECESSARY!*ahem* now that I'm done with that, it isn't a surprise that people do that kind of stuff over new forms of entertainment, its happened to every form of media besides literature, all you need to do is just keep a straight face and ignore the nay sayers, there is NO turning back, too much revenue and too many jobs
He's right, it's like Atkinson has finally succeeded in getting off his "pricks unite" signal.

Well, give him credit where its due... at least he's a consistant fool.
I remember him when he was leader of the Tories a few years ago, and he was a fool then.

And a part of the next UK government? Not if I have anything to say about it.

I am not majorly surprised that this has come from the tories. Posh muppets. This is also why he hates single parent families, and all the rest of it.
