Hypothetical situation: If you could keep and own any animal as a pet, mostly hassle free, what might you be interested in?
Couple details:
-special food and habitat requirements are well met, you could have a sperm whale if you wish, just don't expect them to be right where you can see them all the time considering the small sea that makes up their home.
-Training isn't an issue. You or someone you hired knows more than enough to keep that Liger from gutting you, at least on purpose. You also know enough to be able to properly care for the animal indefinitely.
-Any other legal and ethical issues are taken care of.
There is one limit, while surgery to make the animal easier/safer to manage can be done, it can't be performed if it will truly cripple the animal in the process. For example, removing the scent glands of a skunk can be done with little issue (and they make excellent pets that way), but a Slow Loris cannot be safely handled without either getting toxic bites, or removing the teeth. People selling the popular little primate on the black market are known to rip the teeth out with pliers first. Nasty bit of business.
Some of the critters I would be considering:
Fennec - high energy, social, playful, intelligent, and trainable, this little desert fox has many of the qualities I admire most about both the felinae and canidae families.
Spider Monkey - much the same reasons as above
Panther - quite frankly, one of the most beautiful and majestic creatures in existence. I'd also have an all too amusing way to get rid of solicitors at the door.
