This next one is quite controversial, but deservs some light...

When I was watching Spider Man 3 the other day, I noticed that one of the reporters in the scene where "Spider Man" swings in to save Mary Jane from plumeeting to the ground from venoms web, was Brittish, and since I like blurting out obsemeties I said "Brittish".

As soon as I had said it, my brother, sister, and father lost their mines and started harrasing me like I was Adolf Hitler or Charles Madson by calling me a racist. I tried telling them that it was just a thought, but their thick mones dont get it. I try explaining to them that it was "Nationalistic" and they cringed harder at me, especially my incredible stereo typical brother whos more of the "Hispanic" and less of the American or Brittish in me.
How would you deal with their stupidity and unwillingness to listen to my side of the story?

First, explain correctly your side of the story. To me, it sounds like they scolded you and you didn't like it.

Racism discriminates people through skin colour, Nationalism discriminates people through the country they came from. At least that's the way I always thought of it.

How is stating a person's race anything other than a statement. Unless you said it with a sneer or something, I'd say there's no reason to even mention racism or nationalism. Besides that, I always believed that nationalism was a feeling of pride in one's own nation.

As for how to deal with it, just ignore them, or what patiently for them to finish their lecture and try to explain calmly. They can't stay upset over something like this forever.

Now then, "mines" and "minds" are different and I'm not sure what a "thick mone" is. Please explain.

I have not seen Spiderman 3, so let me see I got this correct. You pointed out what country someone is from and you were accused of being racist? Sounds silly, especially since it sounds like you did not use any derogatory terms to describe them, such as a shortened version of the word Pakistani.

Nationalism is basically patriotism with a negative connatation- the feeling of superiority over every other country. I not sure what you said qualifies as nationalism, and I'm not sure "nationalistic" is a word at all. My dictionary doesn't think so. Racism is the belief that each race or ethnic group possesses certain characteristics that makes them inferior or superior to others. If you're saying that what you said was just "British" when a character with an accent from the British Isles spoke (I think that's what you're saying yes? It's a bit difficult to decipher), I'm not sure that constitutes rascism either. If you'd said "British, he must be gay," that would be racism.

This made... no sense... at all. I don't exactly know what the topic is, given the badly written opening post, but it seems to be an attempt to explain the differences between racism and Nationalism... at least, by what words I can make out.

Anyhow, the ol' Merriam-Webster's describes nationalism as:
"1: loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups
2: a nationalist movement or government"

Personally, I don't see how this pertains to being politically incorrect with a person's race. Or calling out someone based upon where they came from. Either way, I do believe you simply used the wrong term for what you wanted. But if I wished to explain to someone what being "racist" is, I would break out the dictionary and ask them to get their terms right.

PS: just a note here, but I don't believe in "political correctness". To me, PC = bullshit. Just thought I'd clear that up before someone actually thought I believed in that crap :)

What I wonder is how in the world you blurt....

Ya know what, on second thought, I really don't want to know. All I have to say about this is if I ever see some kid in a movie theater with "Obsemeties" in his mouth, I'm calling the fucking cops and getting the hell out of there.

There are various forms of nationalism. England was *very* nationalistic during the blitz, and Churchill was certianly 100% nationalist. The problem is, that nationalism has been hijacked by nutjobs during the past few decades.

Nationalism *can* be postive. Loving your own country does *not* automatically mean that you hate everyone else. The term nationalists is also used as a way to silence people when debating, especially people on the left use this tactics. In the perverted mind of a cultur relativists, its illegal to be pround or indeed love your country.

They're your family. They'll always be like that. Grab some good friends instead.

The difference between Nationalism and Racism is quite simple. Nationalism means "I Believe My Country is the Greatest". Racism is "I believe your race is inferior to mine."

Subtle tone there. I can be Nationalist by saying that "England creates the greatest dark humour in the world." (And there's quite a good precedent there). If I'm Racist,I'd be saying "Your Country just doesn't get how brilliant our comedy is."

I could also say "English people are the best in the World", which is Nationalist and Racist; but Nationalism doesn't have to be negative, whilst Racism is.
