Extra Credits' idea of cheaper games where you pay to access part of it, e.g. the multiplayer.

anc[is]In EC's example the 'main' game would be ~$30, and unlocking multiplayer would be ~$25. Total cost of the 'whole' game would end up being the same. I really like this idea. Believe it or not some people don't give a flying fuck about multiplayer and think $60 for a 3 hour campaign is bull.
This. I don't actually see why anyone would have a problem with this, other than games that don't have multiplayer. The idea they had was that the extra parts will still be on the disc, so you don't have to wait forever downloading, or even a code for that matter. Costs less. Only a slightly longer time to begin playing, if you desperately need the multiplayer. And people who don't buy games for multiplayer/don't have live are getting an extremely good and reasonable deal.

Here is my big problem with this idea (same issue with Project Ten Dollar).

Let's say I have a buddy, who liked Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 but was unsure about Black Ops. I decide to let him borrow BO in the hopes that he will like it enough to buy his own copy and now play with me! Problem, I unlocked multi-player for my 360...

Or hell, a bit more isolated incident, I have two 360's at my home. Project $10 says I can only have one of my 360's play Madden online, how is this going to be any different?

Last issue, I don't like single player, just multi-player. From your setup, I'm paying for single-player and unlocking multi-player. Why not just three SKUs? Customers are really dumb and this would just cause a number of problems for retailers.

In theory, I like your plan. In practice, just would not work.

In 2006, the makers of FEAR gave us FEAR: Combat... which was the multiplayer of the game for free!

This is not a new idea.

And P.S.

People who say the games industry is recession proof are full of shit.

$60 games, project ten dollar, shorter titles released more frequently and entire divisions getting axed are examples of just how much the recession has affected games.

Wake up and smell the astro-glide, y'all are getting screwed.

I've struggled with the idea too. They don't make a huge profit from $60 games as it is. Making them is not cheap. What happens to games like Fallout that have no multiplayer at all? Do they go down in price, and make a much slimmer profit? If that happens, you can bet that the quality and attention that Fallout gets from Bethesda will drop. Or, do they stay at full price? Tat way, won't they seem like they're ripping you off? Nobody will buy it new if they can get other brand new games for $20 less.
OR console manufacturers and game developers could devote less attentions to graphics and, say, intricate physics engines, thusly lowering the costs of development and easing the strain on the consumer. Suffice to say, the games wouldn't be worse--they just wouldn't look as good.

But anyway, this is sort of a moot point--developers won't seize creating graphically expansive mega-projects because doing so would reduce barriers to entry, thus potentially opening the floodgates for more competitors to enter and for the quality of games to be broadly improved (and for it to potentially grow faster, BTW). As it stands, developers and publishers reinforce their own hegemonic stranglehold over the industry by initiating massively expensive projects, then inflame anyone--pirates, used retailers, etc.--who try to avoid paying the premiums they demand. At the end of the day, it's their fault.
Dammit! They have to design 20 Million Dollar physics engines so that cloth moves realistically and a tree sways in the wind. If they don't do that for Generic Shooter/Action Game X, the industry is doomed!

I would be interested, as I am unable to play Xbox 360 multiplayer as I can't connect my console to internet.

It would be nice.

I would have happily payed less for Dead Space 2 and Bulletstorm by skipping the multiplayer.

But I doubt it will happen.

Most people buy a game legaly for the Multiplayer alone in my regions to begin with, I know I would certainly not pay 80$ for Neverwinter Nights and all there expansions if it werent the promise of after finishing the campaeing, going online and makeing a new character and get offered juicy DM interaction and Party members that don't have bollocks for brains. Same was the case for for example Dragon Age here, most people I know fawned over it, everyone sploodged like kids how amazing the combat and story is, but aside form me nobody bought the oryginal and every single one of them argumented that " They game dosn't have MP, no real reason to buy it then." or " if the game had MP I'd have bought the collector edytion". Flawed reasoning but tried-and-true, Multiplayer is what keeps gameing-stores around here from going out of business.

Nobody would buy a $60 game that requires you to pay extra for the multiplayer. That's what. But it's just an idea, not something in the least bit likely to debut at a store near you ever.
the idea is that you pay lets say 40$ for the SP and 20$ for the MP.
I would do that! I don,t like to pay for stuff I don,t use
