updates are good things.

Some glitches just can't be found until the players find them. So you can't bug test for all bugs.

EX- Oblivion's bow method of item cloning. I don't know how the fuck Bethesda would have discovered that shit.

Also, some updates exist to prepare for DLC.

Ahhh it just pisses me off how around 40gb of my ps3 HDD is taken up by "game data utility" and how every oo ill have 15 mins on a game turns into... ahhh another update *put controller down and walk away*.
- by the way this is a big issue for me as 100mb or less takes around 15-20mins to download for me.. my internet connection is fine but download speed is terrible
And what game would this be?
If its taking up 40gbs of space then you have alot of games, delete the game data for games you dont own anymore.
Well at the moment its borderlands, i dont have much free time.. i went to play it first monday resulting in 30min update.. and 30 mins gameplay. Second time i wanted to play was last night, resulting in another (10 min update) that took another 15-20mins resulting in no playing of the game..

i guess its just annoying for me with my internet download speed..

This is my point exactly, oblivion is not an online game and neither does it have trophies.. is people wish to clone things let them be.. if like me you dont, leting you enjoy the game as intended

I just want to know if its only me that is pissed off with the amount of times you have to update you game these days just to play it.. i know it stops glitches ect. but what the fuck happend to bringing out a game with no bugs!?
I'm afraid this time only existed with...Pong, maybe Galaga, and even that's getting out of my age area
Even Pong had glitches. I remember when the ball went pass a paddle. Also, the game would sometimes wait an hour to give you a point.
Well there ya go I guess that fabled time never did exist

Uhh, I've been gaming for quite some time, and I never...ever recall a time where games were bug-free.
Ever.
Yeah this, nothing ever completely runs smoothly and complex games are no exception. I mean Bioshock was a wonder of a gaming experiance but it still had some wierd jumpy moments, but I suppose that's not the same as a game breaking glitch or something that interferes with gameplay.
I mean I suppose it's fair to request a game be completely functional but it is worth noting sometimes these things aren't easy to achieve and that while having to download patches is hard it's still better then the developers telling you to 'go to hell' and leaving a broken game unfixed.
I say that glitches are a part of everything electronical and while I can understand one's frustration with such glitches (believe me, my computer right now is really screwy and I am losing my mind) I think that a few updates every now and then are favourable to having a game remain broken.

So your having a big fit over 1 games updates? If you dont want to update, dont connect to PSN. Its simple.
I want to play online? an its the same with all new games.. i guess little free time and lots of download times = no time for gaming these days

Could you tell me when this magical time was?
Pong, perhaps?

OT: Games have always had glitches. Not neccessarily major glitches, but they've always been there.

Downloading an update is a small price to pay for, gee, maybe playing the game?

I rarely download updates. Unless I see an obvious bug (or hear of one) and go search for the update, I usually finish the game before realising it has an update.
I think I know what the OP is talking about when he mentions a time where updates weren't as frequent. 5-10 years ago it was unheard of for a game to require an update on the day of release. Then again, that may not be a good thing, since an update that fixes something six months after release means there was a bug for 6 months that went unfixed. On the other hand, if you found a bug before customers got their hands on the game, what were you doing during beta?

Before you could update at all, such as the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube. If those games had bugs they weren't debilitating.

Want to try running updates during your not-so-free time?
I usually check for game updates and let the downloads run during my morning shower and breakfast. All I have to do is turn on, click ok a few times, go eat and come back in 30 minutes to turn it off and go to work. Even with a busy schedule it's not very hard to run over to the PS3 and click a few buttons to get the downloads started.
BTW, 40 GB of stuff is pretty crazy. Killzone 2 and all it's DLCs barely hit 1GB for me. Might want to go through the HDD and clean it up a bit.

Bugs still aren't debilitating (unless we start including the massive catalogue of shovelware this generation has). Other than Hearts of Iron 3 I can't think of a game that had debilitating bugs upon release (and HOI3 was less about bugs than just the dev team fucking with players). Though some could argue for a few of the MW2 multiplayer stuff.

First reason: games are big now. And when i say "big", i mean it. There's obviously much more code in Modern Warfare 2 than in Super Mario Brothers.

Second reason: time limits. Sometimes, you simply don't have the luxury of fixing minor bugs before release date strikes.

Third reason: they can now actually fix games instead of just saying "shit happens". Sometimes it results in "meh, we'll fix it later" mentality.

Hmmm. Batman AA, had pretty much no bugs at all. But correct me if i'm wrong.
I had to work 3 hours because my legal copy suffered from the anti-pirate security measures (I couldn't use grappling hook in 2/3 of the game).
Thats a bug ? seems more like some advance secret programming.....

Update is an update. Too bad that besides adding SecuROM, the update doesn't do anything...
