Today, IGN can confirm that Warframe, the ?space ninja? co-op game, is coming to PlayStation 4. It will launch alongside Sony?s new hardware, and will follow a similar free-to-play, microtransaction model as the game does on PC.

Digital Extremes, the 20-year old development studio behind the Unreal series, Dark Sector and The Darkness II, is leading the charge for both the PC and PS4 iterations of the game, and we recently spoke with Steve Sinclair, the game?s creative director, for more on his vision, what it takes to bring his game to PlayStation 4, and what it?s been like working with Sony.

Update: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/05/dc-universe-online-and-planetside-2-coming-to-playstation-4

When Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 wasn't going to be backwards compatible or allow you to download current PlayStation Network titles, DC Universe Online players freaked out. Had the hours spent creating heroes and villains in the MMO been a waste?

Today, Sony Online Entertainment has an answer: no. DC Universe Online is coming to the PlayStation 4 -- and so is Planetside 2, the first-person shooter MMO currently available for PC.

-------------------------------------

Pretty cool, this is the second (I believe) F2P shooter coming to PS4, alongside Blacklight: Retribution. I wonder if any more F2P games will come...

Edit: And Planetside 2 for PS4!

Thoughts?

That's cool, i've been playing this game on the PC a bit and i'm really enjoying it though the frame rate is a bit low. But I think that's my lap top's fault though.

If I do end up getting a PS4 this is going to be a must get for me I think, unless it turns out to be an awful port or something. It is free after all.

I was playing it on PC before it was cool.

In all seriousness unless FFVx2 and KH4 come out on this system in the very year it launches, I can't see myself paying for the damn thing.

That's kinda cool, and if Warframe & PS2 are getting Playstation 4 ports I hope the two platforms can play alongside each other (I'd like to play them alongside my brother, but his Laptop doesn't really have the power to run either)

Neat.

I heard it has had a good reception on PC, so if I ever pick up a PS4, I may well end up giving this a try, to see if I enjoy it.

Cool! I really need to get around to trying that game out sometime. Maybe I'll do that later today. The bows and swordplay looked fun.

I think the lads are finally waking up, F2P is becoming a huge market and if PS4 really is easy to make ports for then you got to hit that.

Especially with Planetside 2 which is their own production.

FFVx2? Don't you mean FFv13? Anyway, KH3 won't be made unless FFv13 gets released which is probably in limbo. And if it does come out the year the PS4 launches, then I doubt they can make KH3 in one year...

This is a good thing for Sony. People can now buy their console and play great multiplayer games without having to spend any money.

Man, today there is a lot of announcements of f2p games on PS4. First Warframe, then Planetside 2 and DC universe as well as blacklight retribution. Sony is really trying to entice me on buying this system and I still haven't seen the pricetag or how it looks.

Haven't played DCUO but Warframe makes at least one solid launch title for the PS4.
If they can make it cross-platform capable that would be great but I'll try to keep my hopes reasonable for now.

They say, that it's very possible for cross-play to happen. But patching may make it harder. Although I swear it shouldn't be- considering DUST 514 on PS3, has it's own patching service. So CCP can update at any time.

Any word on whether it's cross platform with PC players and whether it will also be F2P like the PC version?

If yes and yes that's huge.

If it's walled off in console land it's going to sink rapidly, console players won't have the level of collective organisation (read voice and type chat) needed for such a massive game.

Sounds cool though. But needs cross platform.

Today was only the announcement. Next week is E3, and Matt Higby[footnote]Planetside 2's current Creative Director[/footnote] is going to be there to answer questions.

Console gamers aren't dumb, no point in thinking they need PC gamers to babysit them. Console gamers will be up for the challenge that is PS2.

I didn't say they were dumb, I said they weren't organised.

It's true too, I've never seen or played a game where large numbers of console player can be made to work together towards common objectives. Even in games like Battlefield or Quake Wars (or even MAG, remember that?) it's rare to see groups of more than three or four working together cohesively.

It's not particularly a player issue so much as infrastructure, on consoles you don't get easy access to forums and teamspeak, so large player groups don't tend to form. You never see groups of twenty dropping into games now (do any console games even support groups that size?) and I doubt you'll see it next gen, but it's not uncommon to see groups like that descend on Planetside 2, all connected to a TS server and all talking to each other. You need that kind of number to really advance usefully in PS2 as well.

If they're on separate servers, it's unlikely that after launch player numbers will be very high, if they're not well organised (which they won't be) play time on PS2 will drag, it will take hours to make any useful advances and players won't stick through the grind when other games (like BF4 and CoD Ghosts) offer a broadly similar game with more immediacy and less reliance on mass troops movements.

Sticking them in with the PC crowd will help avoid that as they'll be straight into large conflicts. It'll maintain the critical mass for console players so that they don't drop repeatedly into empty battles and provide the dedicated with entry options into larger groups and clans. For the more casual it provides direction when they play, drop into massive battle, do as others do, feel part of something, have fun. I don't see it as baby sitting so much as generating momentum.

Planetside isn't overly sensitive on the aiming so I don't really see any disadvantage on chucking console players in with the rest of us.

However, sticking console gamers with PC gamers would be the worst thing ever. Console gamers would hop in, get killed over and over again by PC players and then quit.

I played MAG, and was in a pretty large clan that even got up to 124 players in one match before. We worked together in groups and everything. They do exist. Same thing is happening in Dust 514 right now. Sure it's not on the same level as either MAG or PS2, but it still has players using voice chat and working together.

If they get Planetside 2 can we get the Last of Us? Pretty Please? I know that's not gonna happen but it'd be wishful thinking that PC gets some good exclusives as ports. AKA not Fable 3.
