I got your attention, right ? Good. Sorry for this little manipulation, i hope you're forgiving one.

Of course, Skyrim BELONGS to Computer Role-Playing Game genre. However :
1. Not exclusively.
2. You play it in wrong way. No. Really. Sure, you beat the main quest. Sure, you're Skyrim's version of Commander Sheppard. Sure, everyone loves you and you saved whole world. That's one way to play this game, and i applaud you for doing it like you did. Good job !

Still...
Look. There's no way to recreate tabletop, "Pen and paper" rpg experience on computers.
With technological boom that's happening since people harnessed power of silicon it will be possible in let's say 50 years since now.

But as for today, Skyrim is as close to real RPGaming as it is possible. Here's the trick : Bethesda gave you the product that is more or less world and/or hero simulator. Sure, you may do some things easy way, but... Try to recreate living person. Just for the sake of fun ? Isn't that why you're playing it in the first place ?

So. There may be no rules for that, but have you ever tried to cross the river in iron armor weighing more than a few pounds ? Think, how long could you run in arctic environment, possibily wearing only bikini and 20 variations of Orcish Greatsword ? Skipped a few meals ? Know that feeling of overwhelming hunger ? How about your relationships, were you ever involved in real male to female, ahem, union ?

TES Construction is on the way. People will, no doubtly provide us with mods that will change Skyrim into something completely different. In the meantime : how about just pretending, trying ? It's what we, gamers, do in our quest for immersion...

There's a difference between "immersion" and not having fun. Being forced to strictly abide by the real-world rules of physics makes for a boring-as-shit game.

More seriously, who gives a fuck? Role playing isn't about rolling dice anymore, it's about playing roles. Welcome to 2011.

I'm confused by this thread.

You play a role in skyrim? All I do is collect skulls and brooms.

Oblivion mods are better than vanilla Skyrim.

Skyrim mods will be better than the next Vanilla game Bethesda drop.

madkids?
I agree with that, Bethesda games are good, but modded they're so much better.Bethesda knows that too, they give out one of the most extensive modkits with every game they make...

I never really understood the concept of immersion.

Why would I ever want a game to simulate real-life? Would that mean I'd have to stay in 2-hour long car-queues in GTA? That, in TES, I'd spend most of my time walking around my town talking to my neighbours? Or perhaps in Fallout, that'd I'd settle down and find a nice place to live out the apocalypse?

That sounds very immersive, but incredibly boring.

To be fair, I prefer fun games to realistic games. Then again, perhaps that's why I prefer strategy games.

Based on that reasoning then are there really any "CRPGs" left? They are all so far removed now from tabletop RPGs and have been for decades. I would say you would need to go play a text-based RPG if you wanted to really replicate a tabletop experience on you computer, or other machine of choice.

Off topic but your avatar is pretty sweet. I think I'll like it FOREVEEERRRR!

OT: There has been no game that basically lets you play as a living person. Because if there was, it would be incredibly boring. If you think Skyrim would be any better if you got a sting from nettles or you had to keep warm in the cold then you must like really boring games.

Truth. I didn't know gamers could have a subset of Amish gamers.

Uh.. yeah... k.

I do look forward to a "hardcore" mod like F:NV, which isn't very hardcore at all IMO, but I do like that sometimes I have to sleep and eat.

If anything the only thing I find this game lacking in is character interaction. It's pretty short on that.

Also, pen and paper analogy... 50 years from now? I realize that's just a huge exaggeration, but, have you heard of Dwarf Fortress? Pretty sure someone could easily do it now if they wanted to - assuming it's not already done (text base adventure games?)

Even more seriously : who gives a f*ck about you not giving a f*ck ? Don't you have some quests to do ? Or something ? :)

Underlying idea of immerions isn't about recreating YOU in the world of any given game. It's about recreating who you wish to be. You may be Aragorn, Gandalf, Saruman. You may try to become next Conan or Khal Drogo. Or maybe fantasy equivalent of Jack the Ripper is your thing ? Point is : acknowledge your role. Try to play it.
It's fun, and if done properly, also immersive.

Why ?
I have better question : why not ? Why are you even into games ? It's fun. :)

sorry dude i think i am from the wrong generation to understand the whole role playing aspect or possibly the wrong gene pool?

if you want the 'realistic' experience, turn the hud opacity to 0 and never quick travel that will sate your appetite for a while

Yea, It's about playing shitty action game #48726 with little to no RPG elements.

And to the guy who said you'd rather play Skyrim than D&D, enjoy your linear dungeons, boring world and 10 different creature types.
I play Skyrim and D&D. Cut out the elitism, it's just dull.

Skyrim is an amazing game by itself, D&D is a great game by itself. Just because they're in the same genre doesn't mean they cancel each other out.
Sorry hombre, but if all you can think about rpgaming can be summed by D&D alone, then i feel for you. Really, not even slightest amount of joking or having fun at your expense. There are whole universes beside D&D, different styles of gameplay, different adventures... Aw, f*ck it.

OT : About realism.
Guys... You're posting on "Escapist" forum. You play video games. Please don't give me that bullsh*t about realism. None os us (with the exception of you, Bear Grylls, i know you're here) would survive one hour in the wilderness of Skyrim. It's not about that. It's about possibilities, alternative ways to use product you've bought for your hard earned money.
