It seems like it would have been more effective to just allow people to type in their own gender......I'd make mine "potato"

Although, I feel like somebody in Facebook is a giant troll and is having a lot of fun with this.

Edit:
Consider how many combinations of sexualities there must be with all the different possible combinations of these genders

"I'm pentasexual, meaning I like 5 of the 678 genders officially recognized by the Canamerican empire; specifically, I like FTM, MTF, Males, non-gendered, and omni gender BUT DEFINITELY NOT GIRLS (EWWWWWW)"

All they needed was Male, Female, MtFTrans, FtMTrans and Genderless.

A lot of it is really redundant.

A lot of the terms are indeed pretty much synonyms. I think FB figured they might just as well add lots of variations of the same concept so that people can pick the one they're most used to.
I think you've got it. Once you get to 50 built in options though, I wonder why they don't just change it to an open option where you can write whatever you're most comfortable with. Then you can let people make the distinction between things like female, girl and woman as well. Even amongst people comfortable with their birth gender, how they choose to identify themselves is interesting.

Also, since this is only available in US English currently, what appears on the profile of a person who has selected one of the new options if you have another language selected?

I didn't really care until I started to see unfortunate, guilty white people setting themselves to "cis" this and "cis" that. I don't care what gender you do or don't identify with, but the term "cis" and anyone that uses it are sexist/racist scum. Because yes, it is racist or sexist to call someone something nasty based purely on their race/gender.

Well, I suppose it is a net good. I think its a big list but what I think ultimately doesn't matter seeing as its not for me.

I'm for people being allowed to be who they were born to be.

Wow, fifty options. I had no idea there were more than five or six, let alone fifty.

Well, if it makes folks happier, then okay. It doesn't affect me, so I don't see why I should get all worked up about it one way or another. To me it's the actions that make a person, not their title.

Right, because there's no possible reason to talk about people that do happen to nicely fit the gender binary? Not like there's any of them around...

Except the people that use that term tend to use it as a slur, whether directed at others or themselves. Talk about whatever you want, but the term "cis" is still an issue in and of itself, as are the people that continue to self shame themselves for fitting into the gender binary.

Rubbish. "Cis" is simply the opposite of "Trans". Hence the roman provinces of Transalpine Gaul (Gaul on the other side of the Alps) and Cisalpine Gaul (Gaul on this side of the Alps).

I know that. I looked into it after being called cis-trash by someone on tumblr. The origin of a word doesn't stop people using it as a slur.

Well, yes, if you add "-trash" to anything, it becomes a slur.

"Cis", by itself, is not. A ciswoman is simply a woman that was born with female genitals, cishet male means a heterosexual male who was born with male genitals, etc.

It's not because this was mainly about satisfying people and give them no reasons to whine/protest (besides being LBGT-friendly). The only way to do that is by covering every single imaginable type, redundant or not. Also 50 seems like a nice rounded number :p

Wow, I didn't know it was 50. That's either asinine or fucking brilliant. By saturating gender identification like this, they're going to make gender more meaningless and arbitrary. Seeing as that is the ultimate end goal, as I far as I can see, it's a master stroke if it catches on.

Yeah, but "Cis Male", "Cis Man", "Cisgender Male" and "Cisgender Man"?

Uh.

This is just to placate the people who cry about looking down and seeing a penis or vagina and still wanting to be different. Those options only exist for people who want you to know they are different and that's pretty sad in my opinion. It doesn't matter if you are a man but feel like a woman - until you get that procedure done, you are still a man.

But "Cis" isn't a pejorative word. It just means "not trans". Have you been spending too much time on Tumblr? I'm a pretty active feminist, and I've never heard it used in a negative way outside of the more venting-happy corners of the internet.

Edit: Well, probably should have read the rest of the thread before replying to you. Anyway, please don't take Tumblr too seriously. It's basically the mirror universe version of 4chan. It's not a good reflection of feminism as a whole, in the same way that Free Republic isn't the Republican Party platform.

It appears that cis is a genuine insult to many on tumblr and so a portion of the population of that particular shithole have taken to using it in such a way.

EDIT: I should have read all of your post too, I missed the edit there.
