I think you need to delete some friends if that happens to you frequently with different people.
Or, you know, GO OFFLINE so they can't talk to you.
Or don't have a stupid Facebook so that you have better things to talk about than what happened on Facebook, or who broke up with who via Facebook, or how this thing will be happening on Facebook, thanks to Facebook.

I feel ya man. I have a few friends (most of them I never even see anymore) who always want to chat on Facebook. If I log on and see that they're on I try to check my messages and such then get off very quickly before they can start a chat that will lead to nowhere. Luckily most of my friends are cool and don't do this sort of thing but a few of them still persist *sigh*.
Oh well, over the years I've mastered the art of keeping a conversation brief without coming off as rude...most of the time.

I try to talk about games on FB chat, catch up on life, y'know... normal stuff.

Well, no. I haven't really had a meaningful chat over Facebook, but I haven't really had a meaningful chat in real life either.
Although I guess giving my friend relationship advice may count despite the fact he completely ignored it and now the girl he was after is on the other side of the country.

From your post, they come across as being somehow moronic, as you would think of them yourself, which raises the question: why are you friends with such people on Facebook if you don't want to have to talk to them?
The only people on my Facebook who even remotely resemble such awful grammar, spelling, and this 'all-caps-out' approach to discussions are girls who keep only to posting on their own walls and between them.
Personally, I tolerate Facebook chat, for having a quick discussion, or notifying someone about something in private without having to go for wall posts. Then again, I keep to using Steam to talk to friends online, and as I said before, my Facebook friends don't do that sort of thing.

It was stupid when it was first added, it is supposedly worse now. I use skype for IM now.
EDIT: Beyond technical stuff, its easier to control who you IM with when you use a separate service. Why don't you do this so you won't be bombarded by people you added for the sake of it?

Isn't this more a problem with your friends rather than with facebook?
