Nothing wrong with the chat.
You just have stupid friends.
I tend to add anyone I know, not just "friends", so this doesn't really apply to me.

Isn't there an offline mode for the chat(not derp enough to use the site)? Why I love steam, can set myself to offline mode and no one can bugger me while I play.

I used to have that problem. But now I don't!

Yeah... true story.

As for your question, I have the occasional conversation about my friend's scumbag boyfriend[footnote]I shouldn't say that, I'm only going on what she's told me. Which is that he's a massive dick, but she's a 16-year-old girl so she's convinced she loves him[/footnote] but not much other than that. I prefer MSN.

...Good effort, captcha.

Isn't this more a problem with your friends rather than with facebook?

I only use it to communicate with friends when needed, not for just random crap.
This. If you have friends that you actually want to talk to, this problem doesn't happen. Funny how that works.

EDIT: Example, my Facebook messages happen between me and approximately two other people... ever. My girlfriend when she actually has access to a computer, and my best friend/pretty much sister whenever we're both free. As such, my chats are usually pretty useful, having gotten the boring shit out of the way with all the times we've talked before. Most recent conversation with my friend was about coping with extreme paranoia. My last conversation with someone besides those two was about ninjas and schoolwork. Big difference.

I still just use msn I find its alot easier. As far as your conversations go I dont think they have anything to do with facebook but more the people you accociate yourself with.

I don't use FB chat, I don't really like instantly messaging people unless it's really needed.
Maybe just stay offline and message the people you want to talk to :p

To everyone complaining about this happening to them, why are they on your Facebook if you don't like them? If you're not in a talking mood, just go into offline mode. Facebook chat is stupid, but not because of the people. No, it's stupid because it's buggy as hell.

Your problem seems to lie more with the people you accept as friends, rather than with the chat system itself. Do a little culling and you'll be fine.

Considering that I only talk with close friends who are not total idiots, I have to say yes. Yes I have had meaningful and in depth conversations on it.

Do, you are right. Guess you are just one of the "friends".

One or two, I got to know someone who is now a very close friend by talking to them over facebook constantly, one of the things you have to learn to do is wait at least 2 or 3 mins after you post again to allow them to respond or the conversation moves too quickly.

My friends list is however highly segregated- people who just add me after we've met once at a party or something go into a list title "PIDWTT" (i.e. people I dont want to talk to), close friends go into another called "Close Friends" and everyone else goes into the main one.

Plus Id never ever associate with someone who types like the example in the OP.

I find social networking as a hole completely stupid. I don't understand the mentality of people wanting to broadcast their boring lives on the internet.

As its a cheap and easy way of staying in contact with people, and for those who treat it like twitter there's a handy "Block Post" function.

Facebook chat is invaluable to me. It is the only way I communicate with most of my friends. Many seem to have problems answering their phones, including my best friend, with whom I chat on an almost daily basis. I also chat with friends that are floating on a warship out in the middle of the Pacific. Facebook is the only thing the guys on the ship can use to chat with anyone, with personal e-mail and IM applications being prohibited on government computers. So it's either Facebook or government e-mail. One is much more suited to conversations than the other.

Facebook chat isn't what's stupid here. It's a tool that can be used to communicate with a large number of people without having to figure out their AIM, MSN, etc, screen name. All I have to do is log into Facebook and see who's online. This has made chat with nearly all of my friends and family I have spread out around the world possible.

I remember not so long ago when phones were used for staying in contact. Still, thinking back to my Yahoo! Messenger days I distinctly remember NOT being in contact with basically anyone apart from my close friends and even then using a phone was and still is the preferred option. I mean, if you've got 20 friends and you only interact with one then what's the point of using social networking?

For all you facebookians out there, I have a question: have you ever had a meaningful conversation on facebook?

Here's how an average conversation goes between me and a facebook friend:

Me (thinking): Oh god, that person's online. I hope she doesn't start a conversation with m-
Them: HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII BAAAAAAAAABEZZZZZZZZZZZZ HRU???
Me (thinking): I'm in deep shit now. If I go offline, it might hurt their feelings. If I talk with them, I could be in for as long as an hour.
Them: WHY YOU NO REPLY :'(((((((((((((((((((((
Me: Hi, (Person's name). How are you?
Them: HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII :pPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
Me: ... That's nice.
Them: OH HAHAHA YOU SO FUNNEH
Me: ...
Them: so... watcha doin
Me (thinking): What do you think I'm doing? I'm on facebook aren't I?
Me: Nothing much...
Them: OH GOTTA GO LUV YA BYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEE <3

Stupid? Useless? Annoying? I think yes. I'm constantly bombarded with people starting useless conversations with me. Please tell me ONE thing facebook chat is good for.
I think you need new friends

I have plenty of meaningful chats on Facebook, especially with my friend over in India. I love talking to her.
