For a while now I've noticed an "Announce" button whenever I post a new status update, which I clicked once out of interest and saw it was a "pay to the let the world know" thing. How is this "Promote" any different to that?

As long as they don't make it the only way to post, no harm done.
The second they make everyone pay to post is the second that the majority of people ditch Facebook.

Eh, isn't it just to make the said, paid post show up more prominently for your friends and subscribers...?

This doesn't change anything, but to give a new feature for people to have an opinion about. And combining new, or changed with feature more often that not, makes the most common opinion negative.

In other words, if I happen to have a friend on Facebook, who's desperate enough for attention and popularity (and would pay to bump up their posts), I'd just unfriend or unsubscribe.

It's as simple as that...

I love how they changed Highlight to Announce to Promote, as if they changed anything. I think, of course, that for any other reason than trolling people you don't know, it is utterly fucking useless, a waste of time, and a waste of money. A large waste of money, for the paltry job it does. Facebook for many people is a communication tool for contacting people you know. You simply add these people as friends and all of a sudden ho! There are a plethora of ways to get them to read something you want them to!

The only people you're reaching with this stupid feature are people you don't care about and people you go out of your way to dislike.

That said...

Rickrolling everyone on Facebook, or promoting your friend's suspicious admission of homosexuality, those have got to be worth $7 to someone.

Seems like it's aimed at businesses and attention whores so why is everyone bitching about it? Half of you don't even have facebook and the rest would never even use this.

I've outlined the relevant parts.
Not seeing the relevance here, Facebook will still be free, you just have to pay for something that wasn't available before so they're not even taking anything away from us.
