All of my friends are pretty upbeat, they never post really depressing nonsense on Facebook. One of my cousins does get a little over-the-top, but he's a wimpy teen so I kinda let him off.

I should also mention that about half of my friends are satanists, cutters, at least four of them have tried to commit suicide (I was one of the people around when one of them tried to kill themselves, that was fun).

Yeah, a group of some of the most emotional and depressed people ever and they never get depressed on Facebook, funny that.
The people I know must just be whiners in the highest degree.

I tend to air all the crises in my house out in my statuses but I've never done the emo thing usually I just make a joke out of it :) I have a difficult family life and I find it easier to express how I really feel online instead of in person. Maybe your friends are similar? Or maybe they're just wemos who need to be slapped with a wet kipper? Alas it is often hard to tell...
Making a joke out of it is cool, that doesn't bother me. What I'm referring to are posts like this:

"Down and up... and now down.. i'm sinking fast.. how long will this last..."

or this

"sigh... depression is merely anger without the enthusiasm..."

That's when I get annoyed.

I totally agree. I mean we've all had a hard time in life at least once, but that doesn't mean that when it happens you should go on Facebook and say some shitty emo lines.

But you know what's more annoying? When other 'emo-facebookers' comment on someones emo status and say
"Oh I know what you're going through, but be strong you'll get over it!"
Even though you know it's just their mum and their dad having a once-in-a-lifetime argument or something.

EDIT: Do people who post depressing music lyrics also count? Cause that's annoying as well.

We must be abnormal people here at the Escapist, because most of us here are pretty friendly people.
Shut up you... treeface!
Damn, you were right, I can't do that. Here, have some ice cream and a nice comfy chair.

Anyway, I don't have Facebook mainly for exactly this reason. The deepest emotions seem mostly completely ridiculous when postet as a status update. "[...] is depressed. oh god Im sooo lonly :((", even if true, can't be taken seriously.
Plus all these "[...] is waiting for the bus" or whatever... what the hell? If you wouldn't phone people to tell that don't post it as your status!

Let me try to merge the formulas: normal people + partly anonymity + a medium you can post every thought instantly = ridiculousness

I'm ashamed to admit it, I do harbor the suspicion that I am either depressive or bi-polar, and though it's a rarity, I have been known to post such things as my status. The majority of the time, however, it's fairly upbeat or centers around the literary works of H.P. Lovecraft, and never would I use such overused and played out metaphors as "falling" or "darkness" because they're simply not a realistic factor in depression...at least not for me.... or whatever the Hell. I'd also like to point out that, at time of writing, my status is as follows:

________ _________ loves the Escapist because she is accepted there, regardless of her opinions on 9/11 and/or metal concert violence.

...Perhaps the most depressing part of all is the fact that I'm 100% serious about that.

Lol the second one made me laugh had anyone seriously written that? But yeah that must get annoying... Doesn't happen a lot among my friends but generally people with real stuff to deal with don't plaster it all over the internet. Is there a switch in people in happy families that switches them to emo when they reach 13?

The funny thing is, the people I know who are truly depressed never do this sort of thing. I know a guy who is most likely manic depressive. However, he never posts that sort of thing on the internet. In fact, one day a person we both know posted:

"depression is just anger without the enthusiasm..."

To which the aforementioned manic depressive posted:

"you know nothing of deppression! shut the fuck up you whiny prick!"

Its usually the people with the least problems that act the most depressed about them on that site.

It seems like it sometimes. My other friend (who actually does suffer from occasional depression) posted an epic response to the second one, which is in the spoiler in my above post (also, how do I edit my post to quote people so it sends them the alert message after I've already his post?)

I always have a bunch of fun with my Facebook statuses. I say all kinds of crazy things. I've been on the surface of the moon, and I've been trapped inside a vault at the bottom of the sea.

Ah yes, the pseudo-poetic teenager...
"I wish that you would turn around, and see that I've always been here, etc, etc."

When my own sister wrote something like that (probably a snippet from some songs lyrics) I had to explain that such things are silly.

I normally try to think up random fun statuses just for my amusement. Though I have been caught by people making rants about stuff (like my university marks still not being up yet grrrr) and have been messaged by lecturer's telling me to calm down.

While if someone rants too much it can be annoying, the OP proves I would be a liar if I said that I never went on rants.

Huh...my friends and I just use it to let each other know of upcoming plans, let people know things that we'd rather not repeat over and over again (like losing a job), and random references or comments. I haven't noticed any drama or depressing comments...but I only have about 30 friends (because I only befriend people who I enjoy talking to...and I'm picky. Don't worry, I'm a bit more lenient about friend requests here. You just have to be fairly intelligent and/or amusing).

Where is the fun in not having rants on Facebook? ;)

I used to be a facebook emo too. Then again, I used to actually be an emo, and I confess I was just one of those stupid kids with great lives who felt depressed for the heck of it. I got over it though, and stopped posting emo stuff on facebook.

Personally, I think people do it for attention. There are those who look at another person's drama, take it seriously, and see it as a chance to swoop in, change moods, and be a hero. People like the attention these "emotional saviors" give, and post emotional, dramatic statuses to feed on their attention.
Of course sometimes you have some real jerks on your friend list, and when you mix them with stupid facebook posters, this happens: http://failbook.com/
or maybe kids arent always stupid for being depressed ya know, maybe their dad and their dad's dad etc all have the mental disease of depression and its been handed down genetically over the years. but maybe I shouldnt be telling you off about this, apparently my genetic depression and the fact that im 13 mean I'm too stupid to type

ot:I dont have a facebook, but that sounds really stupid, if someone is really depressed they wont say "hey look at me im depressed, yay!" without any slight hint of provocation

I don't really see much depressed yammering among my Facebook friends list; it's mainly just song lyrics.

I cannot adequately express how much that irritates me. Why not just post "Hey, listen to 'x' song, it's really great"? Or, if you feel a certain way, why not explain it, instead of just copy-pasting words in which you have had no part in formulating?

Putting song lyrics on your Facebook status is a sure sign of a totally useless mind.
...

How's that for a rant? :p

My friends regularly type that life it useless/pointless, but it's not really too serious. People act differently on the net anyway, you just got to get used to it I guess..

I've never checked someone else's statues in Facebook, actually I just made an account and never returned.

But this is true with the Internet - listen to melodramatic people ***** about how they didn't get the last Poptart in the box.
