I passed my first time. The only marks I got were for not checking the various alleyways I passed. I know a few years after that they changed it so if you scored high enough on the written part of the test you didn't have to do the driving part. Not sure if it's still the same way. One thing I found amazingly hilarious was the person in front of me to take the test was the daughter of one of the school's instructors. She failed immediately because she didn't have her glasses. That laughter of that moment helped make me less nervous.

When I moved to California from Texas they made me take a written test again. That one took me three tries because of some really obscure questions. However, if you could make a good case as to your answer they'd usually give you credit.

I passed my first time, with one minor mark for not choosing a lane right away, but I have a friend who failed because he drove on the wrong side of the road. It was quite hilarious.

I passed my driving test the first time around--full marks. The only problem I had was that I could not for the life of me find my hazard lights. It was the very last thing he asked me to do during the exam, so I guess he cut me some slack. That, and he was laughing at me... Ass...

I had an opposite situation, in the parallel park I was trying to be really pro but the curb was one of those mini 3" high curbs so the back tire sorta went half up it. The instructor said "well, that can be an instant failure but you're a good driver so I'll just take off max deductions." So, I passed first try.

God I remember mine. I was failed for blocking somebodys driveway. Bear with me.

Driving down residential road, perfectly fine. Theres a delivery lorry parked on the opposite side of the road. A car pulls out from behind it onto my side of the road (I'm miles away at this point so the other driver was fine) so I stop to let them through, perfectly fine. BUT! I wait like 3 seconds to check if theres any more cars waiting behind this lorry so it's safe for me to go through. Only thing is, for those seconds I was unwittingly BLOCKING THE DRIVEWAY of the car I had just let through.

I actually made my examiner explain the situation 4-5 times to me at the end why she had failed me and still didn't understand how that constituted a fail.
But I made a note of her car at the test center (her personal one that is) and pulled the rubber off her windscreen wipers ^_^

Sort of... it is quite common for people to be failed their first, even second, time in Australia. It is believed this is cause you have to pay for the tests, so the instructors are advised to find any little flaw they can to deny a pass. Can't say how accurate this is, but the rate of people failing the first time is higher then expected.

A driving instructor in Tully has a reputation for failing people after telling them to do something. Now you might think that is reasonable, but he is failing them for listening to him! As an example he would tell people to continue through a crossing clear of all traffic. They would then be informed they had failed to slow down at a give way sign and... vola, have to pay him even more for a second attempt.

Edit:
After reading more and more of these posts I find myself agreeing with what others are thinking: They fail you the first time regardless so you will have to pay them again a second time. Having you over a barrel as they do it is only to be expected they will rape your wallet.

Passed first time, can't see what all the fuss is about!

It probably helped that I'd been riding on a full motorcycle license for six months. You want a challenge in the UK, try and pass your full motorcycle test before doing the cars!

I'm 22 and I still haven't taken my driver's test. My learner's permit expired over a year ago so I'd have to get that again as well. Grr, why did I let this happen?

I wouldn't worry. I was 21 when I passed both my car and bike tests. One of my friends decided to get his arse into gear and do it when he was 27.

You'll actually benefit from being 22. When you pass, you'll probably not get screwed quite so hard on insurance!

A mate of mine ran a red light, and naturally failed... We all had fun about it later! Passed mine, but what the driving instructor saw as my flaw, was the lack of looking in the mirror when driving. Not completly lacking ofcourse, but I didn't uphold the "rule" which states you should look in the mirror every 10 seconds. I chatted alot, and I think that helped me.. it seemed to distract her of other minor faults I am very aware I made.

I actually studied into this subject as I was failed the first time when I listened to my instructor, but he then told me to undo what I had just done to make a turn that there was no way I would have the time to make. Being someone able to constructively use my fury for revenge, I studied up on this subject.

It turns out that if a tester does NOT fail a particular amount of students, they are tested themselves. If they fail, they lose the license to preform tests. So, they are inclined to fail a majority of students the first time so as to not get retested themselves.

Second, the money they get is more or less their paycheck. Yes, some of it does end up going to the state to keep their license, but by failing you, they might be able to get a second paycheck.

So it really all comes down to the instructors mood, if he thinks its worth testing you again, and if he or she needs another paycheck.

Mine took me to a gravel driveway on a road with no lines or curb to back around a corner. Failed me because I was too close to the "curb" with the car filling 2/3 of the lane. They also docked me 6 points for not turning right on a red light (perfectly legal in my state,) she said I was "holding up traffic," you know, the zero cars behind me.

I had a friend fail his test for, and I shit you not, turning on the radio.
That actually cheered me up.

OT: I've also noticed female instructors are more about "the rules", while the men care more about good flow.

I passed the first time I took it, although I had points taken off for not waiting 3 seconds after a light turned green.

And this was on an enclosed fake course at the DMV.

I never bothered to go beyond a learners permit. This is New York, nobody drives. There is too much traffic (Damn New Jersians, Conneticans, and Upstaters)

I passed my driver's test with ease, but one of my friends has failed it twice...and he is 17. I fear he may never get his license. But anyway, he failed it the second time because he pulled a quick-stop at the stop sign leading out of the test course. He says he stopped for three seconds, but he has been known to exaggerate things.
