i think we should develop the surface to asteroid defence cannon, and use it to nudge the rocks that come near earth away from the planet's orbit

surely that's a justifiable use of manpower if people are sat on their ass doing nothing ?
i mean, eventually it's going to be needed so why not make use of the time we have now?
work like this is already being done, mostly theoretic, i dont think "huge cannon" is on the draéwing board though, mostly rockets, rocket engines, sails, and magnifying glass type ideas

Faking an alien invasion? Well, they've already faked that there wasn't one, so why not? :)

Well I guess an alien invasion is the keynes answer. Would a zombie invasion be the hayek solution?

I know its not comletely on topic but as a 22 year old from England, would it be cheaper for me to go to uni in America what with them being so boned. I mean im fairly sure the UKs bugged aswell but im not sure.

Also id totally go Ozymandis on a country if it meant I got to wear his bitching suit/costume.

Nope...more likely setting up some other Middle-Eastern country as the next enemy to be invaded and bombed the shit out of. All in the name of democracy and human rights of course.

Perhaps Syria, in the fashion of Libya?

ok, but you get my point why not use the time / labour to construct or research projects that are otherwise left due to labour / time involved or that are not needed for the immediate future?

it's just.. logical..

If this post had a like button, I'd be all over it.... Orwell FTW.
I think that was the most important lesson I took away from that. Whenever I hear people talk about how well war rationing worked I pipe up with that comment.

(I then point out that the US has been at war for quite some time now and our situation isn't improving. Maybe, I don't know, it's because the government decided to slash taxes instead of finding a way to pay for the war it was getting into.)
Absolutely... the 'golden age' of America, where one job could sustain a family, was largely based on the fact that the rich pay higher taxes. Now with corporations and other tax loopholes, the rich pay less tax than the poor and the country suffers as a result.

We actually have proof that we have been in war mode since the beginning of WWII. We went WWII, Korea, Vietnam (backdrops of the Cold war), Cold war main, Iraq, Iraq again, Afghanistan, Libya and in the middle of all you that you have nearly countless examples of military adventurism that has cost America dearly in the form of political allies and money.... I can't help but feel I am missing a thing or two in all of that.
Actually, if you want to talk US military adventurism, that started shortly after the Revolution. Go through the history of the US Marine Corps [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_United_States_Marine_Corps] and try counting all the years since 1800 that the USMC didn't land on or occupy foreign soil.

Damn, that'd actually be really entertaining. I kinda want to see something like that happen.

Since when did Ozymandias start working as an economist?
aimed at the spoiler: you mean when did a massive businessman care about the economy? probably always. he didnt care about the people though.

also, apparently Sweden is invading the US... [/shifty eyes]

Kill a lot of civilians, blow up some shit, soldiers become "heroes", and the WHOLE fucking world still knows it was fake. Great way to "save" the Economy, smart move.
he isnt saying actually invade america, he's saying prepare for a massive war then say 'o btw theres no fighting we fucked up.'
what youre saying would be the americans blowing themselves up and fighting nobody.

I'm actually more surprised to find out that Alan Moore stole the "fake alien invasion for the sake of world piece" idea from a Twilight Zone episode.

I'm going to treat this idiotic idea seriously and then ask a simple question.

Space is really big. That means Aliens invading would require some form of fast than light travel(FTL for short). All of our detection systems going further than the Earth's atmosphere require the use of visual and radio images only. All reporting back at light speed.

So my question is, how the fark are we going to explain to the public that we have 18 months warning that an invasion is happening when the truth is that such warning would reach us at the earliest when the first Alien created explosion occurs due to their reaching us faster than their reflected images?

Yes, I am quite certain that there is enough critical thought out there to go around for that question to be asked often and loudly.

I've seen this scenario before, it usually goes something like this:

Asinine Keynes worshipers who only gain international renown through the public's supreme idiocy and illiteracy: "War is good."

Said public: "Yeah, that's a really deep and intellectually stimulating idea, let's try it."

People who don't hate the human race: *Facepalm*

Hell,why not?

I was going to suggest we execute a mass chicken sacrifice to the old Slavic god Chernobog from that old Disney movie, Fantasia, by blowing up a Turkey farm and hoping The Dark One doesn't notice the difference but his idea is MUCH better than mine!

It kind of saddens me how many people here are taking this totally seriously as representative of the economist's deeper worldview and using it as a jumping board to rant about Keynesian economics. Not that what you all have to say isn't interesting, but what the shit?

This guy needs to get out from under his laurels, as they have blinded him to what we are dealing with today. Everything that is going on could be synonymous to an alien invasion. Terror, warfare, and oppression would be the tactics given to such an act.
Considering we dealt with this before in 1938, it would be hard without solid evidence to actually convince people something like this would occur. It would require the cooperation of every single media outlet, and they wouldn't do it for free. Who would pay for this farce? Governments? Name one that could afford it. The only ones who could would already have the infrastructure for this in place, and those are few. Venezuela, China, North Korea, Vietnam, to name some. You won't hear them admitting they are in bad shape economically, and wouldn't be inclined to commit to such a farce.
This is just one more bit of evidence to me that "Nobel Prize Winner" doesn't mean intelligent nor wise. I would have to ask how far this guy would be willing to go to convince people that this was occurring? How many people would have to actually die or be harmed in some way in order to present proof people unconsciously demand? How many lives would be uprooted and harmed in the process indirectly?
Too many, in my opinion. Way too many.

To answer your question, no. University and college costs have only been going up every year since we had George W Bush in office(possibly earlier than that) and nothing substantial has been done to curb the cost or even create more assistance. Federal student grants and loans have been trimmed in efforts to "balance the budget."
I hope you consider what Ozymandias had to do to pull off what he did to curb the threat of nuclear war. This is pretty much the same thing that this so-called "Nobel laureate" is proposing. What scares me is while Ozymandias wasn't ignorant of the sacrifice that had to be made, this guy gives evidence that he is ignorant of the cost. I seriously hope nobody of power or influence is taking him seriously.

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking of that.

Seriously though, this plan is...flawed to say the least. There's a chance this could be our solution, but really that chance is so small that I for one wouldn't say it was worth taking.
