I remember this kid in grade 2 was going on about this really hard Mario game that has poison reverse mushrooms, and you can jump over the flagpole and find secrets and such. We all called bullshit on him, because thats what it sounds like. Something dumb a kid in grade 2 would make up.
Years later when I played "The Lost Levels" (aka, the real Mario Bros. 2 in Japan) I was like, "Holy shit, it's real."

EDIT:
I guess I missed the point of the thread, since thats not a fake rumor, so I'll have to say Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had so many.
I remember hearing about it being possible to beat the racing dude, in the race from the bridge to the forest, where in fact it is not.

How could I forget the great Wheat Sword in Golden Sun? The thing is so hard to get, I have a feeling that that official walkthrough was lying to me.

My friend is a big golden sun fan if he knew about this lie he would die trying to get it.

I suppose this amounts to rumor, though it was really an April Fools prank, but prior to Twilight Princess, there was the one that the next Zelda would be set more in the future, in a more steam punk style setting.

I hate to admit I would have liked that re-imagining. I thought it had the potential to be more than just another rehash of the same old game.

That is actually kinda of scary, especially saying as how it could be true.

OT: My brother tried for weeks to get sonic in Melee. Then he showed up in Brawl.

The FWAK walkthrough is on the Golden Sun wiki. You should print it off for him.

Unfortunately I already told him about this... Sucks for me.

The only one I could think of was the Mew truck one. I wished it was true. It would have been easier to get Mew that way.
Haha, back before everyone was on the internet that rumor spread like fire here! There even was a group of gamers who met regularly with new theories on how to make that mystical "MEW Truck" appear. I fell for it too but gave up after surfing around those ports at least thirty times.

Also I tried to get back into the Alaska system in Freelancer when I heard from somewhere that if you had the right ship you could go through.

Yeah, no. Not unless its modded.

Pikablu

My illusions were dead when I found out it was fake, as a child.
Actually he's not fake, and not named pikablu. You can get a pikachu that knows surf throygh Pokemon Stadium transfer. Buts its probably not the same.

That was the surfing\flying Pikachu! I got it in Pokemon Stadium as a kid :D
What I meant was a fake pokemon (Which I obviously thought was real back then) called Pikablu.

Which in later generation is called Marill.

I remember when the first Fable came out, rumors flew about "secret areas". Most of them fell into two camps.

1) "I don't know how I did it, but I was in , next thing I know, I'm in this whole new area!<insert thirty "!"s>

or

2) "You gotta be at at on , and a boat/giant bird/cullis gate will appear and take you to the secret area!

It's kinda funny, in retrospect, watching these people verbally square off against others who perused all the game files, and could irrefutably deny their rumors. Some would gang together to corroborate "discoveries" and such. So ridiculous.

I think there as a rumor about playing as Waluigi in the DS remake of Mario 64.
It had something to do with the mirror room and an invisible box.
