An issue that I thought didn't really exist outside of a few crazy guys who can't get laid and want to take that out on the opposite sex......
Beyond an idiot comic book writer and this, it didn't really exist until people made a huge deal out of it. It's quite funny really, as Jimquistion did a video about how Anita Sarkeesian was the "Monster that gamers created" and that's exactly what's happening now.

A vocal minority of sexist assholes say some stupid, sexist things. People knee-jerk and suddenly it's a huge thing. Much larger than it should be, and overall it is pointless, as these tools no more represent "Geek culture" than the Taliban represents Muslims.
I always found that Jimquistion video very hypocritical, because it wasn't really GAMERS who created The Sarkeesian, just as it wasn't really gamers who created this current "fake geek girl" moral panic either, but the video game media pundits from news sites and blogs, just like and including Jim Sterling.

It's not "people" who knee-jerked, it was the gamer media elite that grabbed the most excessive post that some random idiot wrote, and turned it into a straw man for their rants about how mysoginist gamers are.

And now he is telling us that it's "our fault" that Sarkeesian got famous, for blowing it out of proportion. Except that WE didn't do anything, we were just watching the weekly news and commenting on them, it was HIM who decided what the weekly news should be.

They are not much better than Fox News, who would look at some random school shooter owning video games, and then start airing dozens of debates about The Controversy of how gamers are violent, then by the time the whole media is full of the buzz that they created, there already is a controversy as gamers are trying to react to it.

Why are you wearing that much make-up on your lazy day off?!
Because this is advertisement. I have yet to see any kind of semi-professional ad where not every participant - be it male or female - is wearing makeup.
Well, I realise that, and the make-up thing isn't really part of my argument.
It's just a pertinent visual metaphor for what I'm talking about.

It's the expectation that someone is supposed to be cute and quirky and cheerful and entertaining 100% of the time that is just insane. And the people who buy into it are just... sad. They wear themselves out trying to behave like a TV character (or expecting someone else to be like one).

This video is a great piece of social satire:

I... dont care. Liars lie. If they are lying about something they know nothing about then they will be found out soon enough and rejected... however, things like The Big Bang Theory are Nerdface and a bloody pain in the arse.

Captcha: Eat Your Veggies.

Whats that supposed to mean Captcha? I am a slim man who doesnt avoid vegetables, what are you talking about?!

EDIT: I am actually in the process of turning a ladyfriend of mine into a Nerd by just suggesting she watch this or listen to that every so often and then she takes the initiative to ask about similar things, this way the descent into Nerdery seems less like something I orchastrated.

I am tired of having nothing to talk to women about!

Well, on this I disagree. Sarkeesian went to this amount of fame just because of the reactions towards her cause - disregarding how justified she is in it - and the reactions were mostly to be found on YT, 4chan and every gaming forum. The conclusion that it was the gaming community is not that far-stretched.
It's not far-fetched, but ultimately, it's still wrong.

Youtube, 4chan, and similar sites are hate machines by their very structure. They gather anonymous masses with zero moderation, and there are so many commenters that only single sentence, extreme, shocking posts will have an effect. They are inevitably attract the kind of people who enjoy this, and drive away the people who don't.

How many misogynist posts did you see on The Escapist? On any community where posters have a reputation to uphold? Maybe some, but I think, significantly less than you would even in mainstream American society. If anything, nerd gamers in general tend to be progressive egalitarians

The flash game is just another example of that problem. Ok, so there is some 25 year old car mechanic from Burlington, Kentucky, (just made that up), who really hates Sarkeesian, and expressed this by throwing together a flash game. He sucks. But why did Destructoid, The Escapist, The Huffington Post, Forbes, Boing Boing, and dozens of other sites feel important to report on this, and put it into a frame of "gamers" attacking her?

Of course, most people who comment on Youtube and 4Chan are assholes. And yes, a number of them are gamers, so when there are gaming relate news on these sites, they will comment on them. But in the end, what 4chan's gamers think of Sarkeesian tells us more about the 4chan community, than about the gamer community. Mixing up the two is as disingenuous, as quoting the Ku Klux Klan to see what the American Right thinks about President Obama.

Assholes exist. Somewhere. But if you, as a journalist, blow it out of proportion, and talk about nothing but this for weeks, and generalize as if it would be a serious problem all over our comminity, that can be exactly as manipulative as talking about a school shooter for weeks, to keep an atmosphere of moral panic, as if your children would be in the danger of going postal right now.

It's the same with these "fake geek girls". To pretend that there is an "outrage" against fake gamer girls all over the gaming community, journalists intentionally have to create the atmosphere that everyone is in danger, that if your debate partner disagrees with the journalist, he might very well be one of them outraged mysogynists.

Well as a female who's into the geeky stuff, I've had to deal with fake geek girl accusations pretty much since I started growing boobs.

I had a guy humiliate me in from of a bunch of other guys over Dragon Ball z, because me and my little 12 year old self had only seen DBZ on cartoon network and had no idea there was a Dragon Ball series that came before it. Then there was the guy and the spider man thing, the guy in the comic book store when I went to pick up a spider girl comic, the guy on youtube over star wars/KOTOR2(which actually I really owned him about Kreia, but he still went on this thing about I should not be into star wars, it's not normal), then there was the guy and the halo thing, there's more but then I'd probably have an essay.

It's like a constant battle with geek guys to prove that yeah, I'm actually into this stuff. If I'm not perfect, if I don't know every detail, they will crucify me.

Well, you see, the Escapist has been going at this all wrong (at least Jim is, I don't know how satirical the Critical Miss strip was of either side). It's not a super attractive girl dressing up like Catwoman to get attention from an overweight unattractive nerd. It's a mainstream crowd using geeky/nerdy/gamer/etc. stereotypes to say how much of a "geek" they are. This is all well and good, minus the stereotype part, but actually being a geek is looked down upon.

[sup]also, no one wants to hear how someone has "no life" because they spent half an hour playing Pokémon on their DS for the sixty fifth time.[/sup]
This.

also...

"Being a nerd is a byproduct of losing yourself in what you do, often at the expense of friends, family and hygiene. Until or unless you've paid your dues, you aren't welcome. Being a nerd isn't graceful or glorious. It's a life born out of obsessive dedication to a craft, discipline or collecting some stupid shit that only you care about."
-Maddox, 'You're not a nerd, geeks aren't sexy and you don't "fucking love" science.'

Nerd is a title earn by having certain characteristics. It's not a fucking trend for people to superficially latch on too.
Unlike some others, I like having more gender equality in my hobbies and having people who care or want to care about them. What I don't like is people trying to use said titles and hobbies superficially for their own popularity before discarding them later.
So, so wait: Let me get this straight... Being a Nerd or Geek means your in a special group that others can't join just because they want to? That they have to fallow certain criteria to join? ... That seems really shallow. That sounds like when a clique rejects a person because "They don't fallow Certain Criteria". When did being a Geek make you a part of a clique? Do 2 wrongs make a right? Should people really deny others just because "They wanna just use a title?" More importantly, haven't we all just wanted to use a title?

This whole thing seems really stupid and childish to me.

The reason that I get angry people certain people who claim to be geeks is because they aren't actually interested in the culture itself or becoming a part of it. I want people to be interested in the stuff I like and to join the community.

What I hate are people who take a superficial and inaccurate portrayal of said culture and use it for their own personal social gain.

HERESY!

"You ask why we must cleanse the xenos. I will tell you. The filth of the alien and the witch must be exterminated to preserve the purity of the Human race, lest we degenerate into abomination.
- Witch Hunter Tyrus at the Conclave of Vera

"Smite now the scions of the Witch!
Grant us the strength to pierce their unclean flesh!
To cover their fields with the pale form of the blasphemous dead!
To drown the thunder of guns with the shriek of their dying!
To lay waste to their citadels with hurricanes of fire!
To wring the hearts of their kin with unavailing grief!
To send them into the waste of their desolate land in rags and hunger, broken in spirit, worn with travail and begging for the refuge of the grave.
We ask it, in the spirit of wrath, O Master of Mankind!"

- "Abhor the Witch, Destroy the Witch", prayer and vow of the Black Templars

May the God Emperor of nerdkind have mercy on your eternal soul.

Me and some of the others basically went over this in the latest CommuniCast.

I can understand why some people are bothered by it, but honestly, it's pretty fucking ironic, all things considering.

'Oh, I suffered through my early years being a geek, why should others get to call themselves a geek without the having to go through the social scorn I had to?'
It's not just that, the girls who used to bully me in school for being a geek are now wearing fake glasses and strange versions of what they consider to be clothes nerds wear and saying "I watch Big Bang Theory, gosh I'm such a nerd lol"
I was geek to them because I didn't go shopping every Saturday with daddies card, I rarely wore make-up and I didn't open my legs to every guy that said hello. Being fairly unfeminine and just the opposite of them basically (also owning a PS3/2, watching anime etc) made me in a GEEEEKKKKK (also a lesbian, apparently) in their eyes.
That's just not on, just because a magazine tells you that geek chic in the year, doesn't mean you should start acting like the girls you bullied in school, whose confidence you destroyed.

So it's a bit personal for me, when I see the girls I used to go to school with thinking they're some cooky, cute little nerd when I know they're just a ***** in fake glasses.
Girls I don't know, I don't care what they do or dress like.
Okay, I too got picked on heavily all throughout grade school by other girls for being "nerdy", "not girly enough", etc., to the point where I was ashamed to talk about my interests or show interest in my hobbies, had no social life in school and was terrified to try to make friends. Granted, I've been out of high school for twelve years and all of that stuff is well past me, but now those same intersts and hobbies are being questioned by the people who went through a lot of the same things as I did, simply because I now don't look "nerdy" enough to them and am female?

How is that cool? You don't know the past of every person you judge like that. And most of these girls are just kids and teenagers, for crying out loud. They hardly have their own self-identities at that age, and it's a pretty normal thing to try different things.

Well, I know that posers irritate me (regardless of gender), especially those that are trying to cash in on the culture. Those that are just doing it for the attention, whatever. They will find something else. Still I dont know why men are being blamed for this when women are equally guilty...

unless we are using different definitions of "fake geek girl" to mean "geek girl." As for why the focus on fake geek GIRLS, i have no idea. I had no idea that it is apparently an epidemic according to the escapist. Probably because it is more sensationalist to give the subject a tinge of sexism to make sure it riles everyone up, just like the Halo4 censorship thing a little while back.
