Which one, which one indeed? Well, I'll just use my goto answer: They are both good in some way or form and I love them equally...

I'm gonna go with Fallout 3, because I haven't played the other two. I'm sure they're both pretty great though, I do plan on trying them some time.

Fallout. The first game was the best at capturing the feeling of a massive wasteland and provided the chance to use several ways to solve problems. While Fallout 2 is slightly better gameplay-wise, I feel it is often ruined by all its' pop-culture referencing.

Fallout 3 is still a good game, but it doesn't have that special oomph that the first two games had.

Two, two, two, two, two.

I wish I could get the Fallout 2 source code just so I could put in the Fallout-3 esque "immersion breaker" from the end of the vault. I would put it right at the bridge outside of the starting village.

Many a time my friends dream of playing Fallout 2 again, and they don't want to bother with the start area. Fallout 1 wasn't so bad because you could just run past the rats, leave, and be on your way, and Fallout 3 has that auto-save there.

In Fallout 2, I just have a save on the bridge that I use a character editor with to avoid it, but most people don't bother with this sort of hassle. This one tiny thing would improve the game.

Fallout 2 is far and away the greatest there.

Fallout 1. I have that beginning memorized after restarting so many times when I was a little kid.

Fallout 3, because the gameplay is much more enjoyable than it's predecessors.
Do we have to play nice? ...fine. *Ahem* I disagree with what you say, but I realize it's a personal opinion, to which you are entitled.

Personally, I feel the first 2 are better than the third. Also I consider Fallout Tactics part of the series.

Gameplay was best in the 2nd, because of all the humor.

Hmmmmm if I had to choose I'd say Fallout 2. It just seems better than Fallout 1, and Fallout 3 is still good but I'd say it's nothing like the previous 2 so I won't count it >.>

2, of fuckin' course. 2 was more adult than 1 with stuff like slavery, hunger and prostitution and Fallout 3 just ruined everything. I dont want to play that oblivion mod anymore! Ok ok. So it's good, but IT'S NOT FALLOUT DAMNIT!

I wasn't all that blown away by 3, I preferred the first two. Yes, even the combat, if you can wrap your head around that. It's not easy to decide between 1 and 2 though.
Like Gethsemani said, Fallout 1 just felt better somehow. But even with patches, it's terribly unpolished. On my first playthrough, I never even found the water chip: I got my time extended by 100 days by the water merchants, and played the whole game through in that 250 day time limit. And that's just one example of strange stuff that could happen to you.
Fallout 2 also had its share of problems, but not as many and they were less extreme. Overall, it was just a far more tight gaming experience. It was also even darker than the first one, which I enjoyed, but otherwise, the atmosphere wasn't as great as in the first one.

In the end, I gotta go with Fallout 1, since they were always about the idea of the wasteland for me, and I have a thing for originals.

All Three for me
Opinion is void on grounds of grammatical fallacy. All three games cannot be the best in the series. Best for different reasons, but not overall.

For me I'd say 2. I was a fan of the gameplay in Fallout and similar titles. The story was good, and it greatly expanded upon the universe laid out in the first game.
The grammar is not flawed at all. Grammar is based on set theory, not ordinals.
This means that you can declare any number of items to be the "best", as they are then part of the "set" of best items.
This distinction comes from the fact that natural numbers, ie a strictly ordered set, are incapable of expounding on the nuances of flawed comparisons, such as apples and oranges.

Thank you, and have a very safe day.
Thanks for the help dude, Btw i said all three because i rathed enjoyed the first two, but Fallout 3 kinda sold the post apocalyptic wasteland for me, I like how it tries to immerse you into the game, but for Haters of Fallout 3 because "Its by a different company Damnit!" Blame the company not bloody Bethesda, Interplays are the ones that went bankrupt, not Bethesda fault -_-

Depends on how you judge them. Fallout 3 is easily the most fun, no dispute there at all. But if you judge it on how advanced the technolody of the time was I'd have to say 1, but that is disputable.
