Baldur's Gate and Fallout 2 use the same engine dont they? <.<
Nope, Baldur's Gate uses the Infinity Engine. Fallout 1 and 2 used their own unique engine.

STEAM!

Or if you're one of those many "console-gamers" then I'm not sure it's out for release on console.

It may be, I just haven't seen it.

I've played them, and honestly I wouldn't recommend buying them. The combat is excruciatingly dull and the writing/story isn't particularly good or interesting either.

Buy it. Even if it's 10 bucks support the guys who did a killer job.
And in FO1 Speech is important.

More so when you can convince the end boss to not fight and just kill himself (win).

Nostalgia is a ***** people...

But Fallout doesn't suffer from "NOSTALGIA VISION", like other games. It's still good. If a little hard for my tastes.

BACK TO MORROWIND!

Oh come on, give us a few reasons. These kind of posts don't prove anything.

Personally I like all three, but F3 is by far my favorite.

The older games have more emphasis and building certain skills and opening up particular dialogue paths, and have a more evil sense of humour.

They are also much harder, the turn based combat means you do a lot of math and cannot go into certain areas until you level up.

Personally I find the combat in F1 and 2 fucking awful and an absolute chore to sit through, especially in big battles where you spend a minute waititng and 10 seconds playing, on a repetitive loop.

Fallout 3 is more user freindly, has a gorgeous world to explore and a more fun combat system. For me it is far more immersive due to the current tech being applied and the open nature of the roaming.

It certainly does cater more to current gen gamers though, as it is much easier to make a god character in F3 due to the almost unlimited supplies of ammo and caps.

I've poured more hours into F3 now than any other game and loved every minute.

And for ther people who say F1 and 2 take more skill.... they do not, they just take more grinding, picking the right skills and some lucky number crunching.

I've played Fallout 1 & 2 only for a short period of time.

You'll have a problem playing them if you're coming from the third installment since Fallout 1 & 2 are like other old games - you need to get used to them.

Personally, I think Fallout 3 sucks big time and would recommend you playing these games. Better story, great humor, etc. Knock yourself out.

The dialogue is better, story is better, humour (as you said above) fits the world more appropriately, I despised what they did with the VATS system.

It's not that I don't like Fallout 3; it's a good game. Nothing compared to Fallout 1&2, but that's because they're practically different games.

I prefer it when main-sequence titles in a series don't completely change formula.

That's a fair point.

I absolutely love Fallout 3, but I do sometimes think it would have been better named something like Fallout: Capital Wasteland and not promoted as a direct sequel to two very different games.

While I've never played either of them, I would recommend you buy them from GOG. A hell of a lot of extra swag for less compared to Steam ($18 for the set). Plus, absolutely zero DRM and they work with XP and Vista (and probably 7 too).

I played Fallout 3 and loved it and have been considering getting Fallout 1&2 as well in light of the upcoming release of Fallout Vegas.

Is there a preferred way of getting it, should i pay or find it free, or not bother at all.
Usually Target sells both games plus Fallout Tactics in a three pack. If you download them get them from good Old Games. http://www.gog.com/en/search/sort/search/fallout. There's no drm but it might be cheaper to buy the three pack from Target.

I loved the old Fallout games, go buy them now. But I still think Fallout 3 is better in the atmosphere department. I don't know if it's just me but for every nugget of gold that the original fallout had in story, fallout 3 had 2 in making the world better. So in the argument of which is better depends, do you want story or an atmospheric game world? But anyways, if you haven't played Fallout 1,2, or Tactics yet fix that..fix it now >:C

Be careful, it may not run well on some systems. Vista and Windows 7 have a bit of bother. But there are fixes available online.
