I've been playing Fallout for a few months now, and keept restarting because I'd mess up saves, or realise I'd missed out on a great opportunity for exp. or wanted to try a different build. But one thing that I can't work out, and doesn't seem to be on any walkthroughs or guides (or search bar)is how to change the armour your companions are wearing. I'm at the hub, and can't do any of the missions, not because I'm too weak, but because Ian keeps getting his ass handed to him on a plate, and Tycho has an annoying habit of shooting us all in the back, which doesn't help.

TL:DR Is there any way to change the armour your NPC companions are wearing?

I think the only thing you can do is give them armor, and hope they put it on. That's how it worked with weapons if I recall.

I don't remember if they actually ever changed their armor though.

nope, in Fallout 1 you can't upgrade companion armor, unless there's a mod for that. you can only upgrade weapons (and only within a certain limited scope... and don't, for the love of god, DON'T give them anything with burst fire).

...I gave them burst fire. ..and stayed the hell back. It was a fun show in the early parts.

Near the end? >> Don't. They usually die anyway. But yeah, no armor, only weapons.

I want to see Dogmeat in power armor..

I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that if you put armor in their inventory they would get the benefit of it, it just didn't change their appearance. But I'm not 100% on that. It's been a long time.

I'm pretty sure they don't change their armor, even if you give them some.

I'll check the wiki to see...

EDIT:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout

Under Recruitable NPCs:

NPCs' statistics and armor remain unchanged through the entire game; only their weapons may be upgraded.

I don't think i really bothered with NPC's in the first one to be honest, you cant really control them so they are of very limited use. Fallout 2 is a different story though as you have much better control.

Thanks guys, I read through that Fallout Wiki page already, how did I not see that. Oh well, I suppose I'll just give Ian the .223 pistol, and see how far he gets. I need companions to carry all my gear, since I have the reduced carry-weight trait. I'm gonna go now and introduce that deathclaw to to the business end of my combat shotgun.

Any Tips on what weapon to give Tycho?

Oh right, only Fallout 2 is like that. Ian did good with the .223 for me, so he was less inclinded to friendly fire me to death since he's a bit overzealous with SMGs.

Tycho I think did pretty good with shotguns and autoshotguns.

He's good with rifles, shotgun etc. Just give him a good one with no burst and you should be good.
