Hello Escapist.

I recently purchased a brand new gaming PC after realizing upgrading my old one to Win 7 would mean replacing too much anyway, and I'm very proud of it, except for a few factors.

The first being that a lot of games and other programs are extremely temperamental. They either work perfectly or not at all, and each program switches between those states.
The second is that I absolutely cannot get it and my old Windows XP to talk to each other via crossover cable. It's like a college professor trying to get through to a bucket of retarded pies.

This brings me to Fallout 3, and I am amused at having just been able to turn two glaring problems into a fun little roleplay.

The first being that attempting to fast-travel results in the game crashing, so I can't use it. That's fine, I like walking anyway - and I now have more than enough hardware to enjoy the long treks without stuttering or incomplete textures.

The second, something keeps causing the game to crash, and I've narrowed it down to the sound of a cricket chirping at night - during the day is fine, but at night it just dies.

So the amusing thing I wanted to share is this:
I have to plan my days in the Wasteland so that I'm indoors by sundown, or I will die. It actually makes the game much more exciting, because I keep looking at the time and realizing I have to run like fuck to find shelter before the crickets come out. There's plenty of places in the Wasteland where access to an indoor cell isn't possible on short notice.

That said, if anyone has any ideas on how to unfuck the fast-travelling or cricket-chirping crashes, I'd appreciate some advice... but I wanted to share my new roleplay feature.

Cave was right, but in this case, I made lemonade.

Have you uninstalled and then reinstalled the game? And are your drivers up to date?

Also, just buy a cheap hub/router if you want to connect your 2 computers together without issue.

I really don't know what else to say, those sound like some really strange problems you're having.

The more I think about it the more I think it would suck ass not to have fast travel. How would I sell all the gear I pick up without being able to teleport right to a merchant?

Also, lol, firefox does not recognize the word teleport (or the word firefox for that matter).

No idea how to fix your problems, but if crickets crashed MY game, I'd have thrown it out the window by now.

I award you mad props, dog.

Heh, reminds me of when I tried playing Alpha Protocol on a 10 year old PC. FPS was down to the point I could count it on one hand, random glitches, but I still took advantage and made it work. good times.

That said, I recently played it on a new PC, and it's even better than I thought.

Congratulations. You are no longer playing Fallout; you have just upgraded to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. HD Edition. It's a bit buggy, you can't fast-travel, and if you happen to be out at night you die.

To be perfectly honest, though, I admire your patience with this game, and I find that your roleplay solution is the exact kind of unusual spice that would keep me playing Fallout. Wouldn't know where to start with fixing it, but I'm just saying I don't know if you need to do so.

If I where you I would check out if I had problems with my RAM (in regards to the fast travelling problem) and update/re-install my audio drivers in regards to the cricket problem. Re-installing Falout might also be a good idea.

strange. I doubt it's Windows 7's fault. Go search on some forums, you might find the answer there.

Excellent idea, friend.

I wish my games broke in a way that make them more immersive and compelling.

No idea how to fix it, but why would you want to? You'll never have the will-power to stick to those limitations once it's fixed.

the problem is that you are using Windows 7, which didn't exist when Fallout 3 was made. I won't bore you with the techno-babble as to why this is an issue, just watch the video below and it'll fix your problem.

I'd have to say that for this to happen it has to be your system, mods, or your graphics driver / card.

Unless you modified something, there is literally no possible way for you to attain this type of corruption error and so... I hate to be unhelpful but... it's your fault... somehow.

This. It's nothing to do with my drivers - this computer is brand new, as in it has less than 40 hours of working time. Re-installing anything would be a pointless pursuit. It's just that Windows 7 and Fallout 3 take some negotiating to get to warm up to each other.

Hehe, reminds me of playing Fallout3 for the first time, worried about being out at night, trying to find somewhere to hide and rest. Kinda makes me wish I wasn't so badass, so I'd get that buzz of running for my life again.

But yeah, it'll be Windows7 - that can really throw a fit with graphically intensive games - things that might not bother XP can bring Win7 to it's knees.

Update: I came up with the idea of simply using the Wait function to skip the nights... it's ruined it for me, so I endeavoured to fix it and have succeeded with some light source code modifications.
