I LOVE the Alien weapons. Maybe that's just because I'm a nerd and always wanted to use a gun that looked like it, but it get the job done.

Energy...

I am pissed with it in fallout 3 for two reasons. First is energy weapons where 'gimped' as the designers seem to have wanted a way they could, how could I put it, balance out the weapons. In the first two fallouts energy weapons where easily twice as powerful as small arms, and twice as useful as heavy weapon (ammo was too heavy), and became a good balance between ammo carry capacity and damage. In fallout 3 it doesn't seem to matter which one you select, energy or small, both are equal in all ways.

This was balanced in 1 and 2 by the progression of the game itself. There was no way you where going to get your hands on a energy weapon any later then half way through the game. This worked two folds:
The first was, by the time you got a energy weapon, your small arm skill should be high enough you could pick the flee off a dead dog a kilometre away with a pistol if you favoured it over energy weapons! Ok, exhaduated, but it was along those lines, by the time you got a energy weapon you could ensure you would hit more times with a bullet, unless of course you planned ahead and had pumped points into energy from the get go.

The second was that you had to, should you ignore your small arms completely and plan for when you did get your grubs on that energy pistol, get very personal with the quick save and load function in the start of the game. You would have to struggle and play the game more slowly, in many cases even avoid combat all together, just to get to the point you could rain electric powered death onto everyone. It was a choice you had to make. Planning for the whole game by putting points in both or favouring one over the other, choosing either to be more skilled in the first or later half of the game.

A third, but only half a reason so not one of the two main ones, was energy weapon ammo being rare up to the last quarter or so of the game. Not so much of a cripple though as soon as you got to one of the major towns someone in there would have ammo, if expensive for it as at that time you didn't have billions of caps/coins. Still ensured that half of the game even if you found a pistol through, say a random 'special encounter', fueling it would be hell.

Fallout 3... got a laser pistol the first damn town and ammo all over the place! NOOO, just no... bad fallout, bad. One reason I felt fallout three had ZERO difficulty progression. They threw energy weapon and super mutants* against you within the first... what 10th of the game? As opposed to making you crawl on your knees with a stupid pipe rifle against other humans and mutant animals till you begged to god to find even a 9mm pistol.

*Gimping these once terrifying enemies into something that rusted and old 9mm pistol could defeat. I kid you not, I hid the first time I saw one thinking I was dealing with the old mutants of fallout 1 or 2 that would rip your head off, even if you had power armour.
These defiantly are not the super mutants of your grandfathers time.

Small guns. The Railway Rife is my favorite weapon in that game, followed closely by the hunting rifle, both of which are Small Guns. Come on now, a gun that fires railroad spikes? Thats badass.

I like myself some small guns. My favourite weapons are probably Ol' Painless and the double barrel from Point Lookout.

Gasp, really!? But I love aliens and it look relatively impressive.
I'm playing through at the moment. It's another straight up shooter except that some aliens have massivly inflated health and their weapons suck meaning combat has literally become me standing still clicking on the enemy and every so often using stimpacks to heal myself. The aliens themselves are well boring there's very little diversity in what you fight no interesting loot (except for a few items obtained by killing you're teammates) the dialogue and voice acting are up to Bethesdas usual standards (i.e. horrible). That's not talking about the raping of canon. Seriously you're better off not insalling it and then you can get the alien blaster without going through it.

And the worst part is it's even buggier than the main game.
Well, I'm going to buy the GOTY edition for PC anyways. Might as well give it a shot.
i do admit, mother ship zeta isnt all its cracked up to be, i personaly like point lookout, cause it brings in some difrent enemy's, unlike in the wastes, thers only a small array of animals, but in point look out, tere bring out the weiedest things ive seen, like the scrapper, i think its a creature, could just be a name, oh well, im rambling, gonna get of here and play some gears of war

You know what's better than the A3-21 or AE-21 or the DUI-4.5? The A1-Steak Sauce Energy Small Gun Weapon Leather Power Gatling Minigun Laser. It uses the Unarmed Small Energy Big Guns skill.

By the way, the Gatling Laser and Vengeance use Big Guns not Energy Weapons.

Most of my characters tend to use Small Guns, Sneak, Lockpick, and Speech very heavily.

I used to be all about melee and small guns, but then I realised how much they suck in the later game.

My latest character now only uses big guns explosives when engaged in combat.
Or, to put in in even simpler terms: More dakka.

i gotta say, id prefer the revisitors rifle and lincolns reapeater as long range, and the chinease assault and combat shotgun for close quarters, if you catch my drift.

small guns + sniper perk + two other perks that I forget... = non-stop win

until youget a gauss rifle, in which case it's better than pretty much anything bullet related
