What have radars ever done to you?
lolXD

So, I'm working through the "Those!" quest, and was just wondering, how dangerous is the journey to rivet city? I'm level 6, should I wait??
It's easy. I was at rivet city around the same level. Careful of Super mutants though. Take em out with hunting rifle peek shots.
This.

Easiest way to get to Rivet City is to work your way around the DC ruins, following the river.

I actually made it there around level 5-6 my first playthrough. It was an epic adventure.

Oh, and the 'Those!' quest is much easier if you have a) Frag Mines, and b) a Combat Shotgun.

(Then again, all indoors combat is easier with a Combat Shotgun!)

In my time in Fallout 3, I've made about 8 different characters, and taken three or four of those up to 20 (I don't have the expansions, but Bethesda can shove those for releasing them for free with the game after I'd paid full price for a smaller game).

You can imagine though, that I have some competence when it comes to making character stats.

The OP stats are fine, there is however some growing pains for you to go through with this character. Essentially, your Skills don't fit strongly enough with your SPECIAL statistics right now. Your SPECIAL stats look like those of what I'd call a sneaking turtle, with high Agility matched by a hard casing of Endurance if your sneaking fails. That's a good idea for this game, as sneaking is very hit or miss in it, even with a high skill level, as many situations and random encounters you run into will not allow for sneaking, and have people ready to ambush you instead.

The trouble with the SPECIAL here isn't actually the Charisma - it's the low Luck. Base damage is important, but if your critical hits are very common then it doesn't usually measure up in this game, so Luck is one place that badly needs to be at least 5. If you haven't progressed since level 5, I'd suggest getting the Intense Training Perk whenever the others available aren't so relevant to your Ninja plans, and sinking that point in Luck. This will make sense since Luck is important for sneakers, because it defines how good crits are, which are what you aim for if you're sneaking and want to kill multiple enemies silently.

That's SPECIAL out of the way. With your Skills based on Sneak, Small Guns and Lockpicking, you've got a thief-style character coming together very nicely in fact. What you really need to do next is get some points into either Melee or Unarmed (and while Unarmed is nifty fun at high levels, Melee is where it's at for damage). This will allow you to silently take down enemies in a way that Small Guns cannot achieve as they alert most nearby enemies to your presence - a very important thing in small spaces like the subway, where you have no great distance to snipe from. The only time this particular build you have here would be useful is when sniping a large group of enemies from a great distance while well hidden. And the only time that you have that opportunity in this game is above the Raider base in Evergreen Mills, on the West of the map - and you'll need a good sniper rifle for that.

Now, just so you understand, your character is very much not made for talking things through, so you have to expect a lot of combat (whether through sneaking or open fights), and therefore build for those alone. Lockpick, I'd say, won't need more points for a long time, like level 15, because you can already open more than half the locked objects in the game with a 50 skill. Unless you plan on setting your character's money up by stealing things in Megaton. You'll need to be able to unlock some very difficult locks for that.

That should be enough to get you going. Good luck.

a few tips are: try being stealthy, only take enemies you know you can without much effort, avoid large crowds and dug in areas, don't fall into drugs or booze (they cost to buy, cost to treat, and are all together not worth it, kind of like real drugs), try to get better gear, and don't head into DC yet, as it is crawling with super mutants and quite a traps.

I'm at the beginning of the game right now, and these are my stats:

Quest: Find the Museum of Technology

Level: 5

Wearing: Armored Vault 101 Jumpsuit, Vault 101 Security Helmet

Using: Hunting Rifle (Current Damage 17)

Actual Stats(SPECIAL):

STR: 6
PER: 6
END: 8
CHA: 3
INT: 5
AGI: 8
LUK: 4

Skills specialized in:

Small Guns: 60 points
Lockpick: 50 points
Sneak: 76 points

Perks:

Educated
Gun Nut
Thief(2)

I'm having trouble in the game and I'm wondering if I'm doing anything wrong. I've typed in my basic character sheet as an aid to the experienced Fallout 3 players of the Escapist in hopes of critiquing my current build and seeing if they have and tips or recommendations for me.

personally, i think that you've screwed up your special. Trust me, i play this, like 13 hours a day! I'm extremelly eperienced. i've only got about three more side quests in point look out, then i've done pretty much everything. Anyway, I get by easily. The skills i maxed out on were:

lockpick
science
small guns
energy weapons
repair
sneak
lockpick
melee weapon
barter.

These are great skills to train in. all of them. here is a trick to get [HEADING=1]LOADS[/HEADING] of caps

Go to a vendor, that has more than one item. Buy the cheapest one, then sell it back. keep doing this until the vendor is out of caps. Once you have enough caps, buy whatever you want then repeat the process. Once they are out, wait for about 72-80 hours, then go again!

If you have operation anchorage, then go and complete it ASAP! You get the chinese stealth armour, which is, In my honest opininon, The best armour in the game. It's all i wear. if you need any more help, PM me. ; )

This is what I've done for pretty much every Fallout 3 character I've made, and I breeze through most of the game even on Very Hard:

Charisma is the least important stat. Put nothing in there.
Intelligence is the most important. Start it at 9 and find the Intelligence bobblehead as soon as you can.
Plan other SPECIAL stats based on what perks you think you'll need. Take Educated and Comprehension as soon as possible. Good perks: Gun Nut, Intense Training, Toughness, Gunslinger, Strong Back, Sniper, Silent Running, Cyborg, Light Step, Better Criticals, Action Boy/Girl, Concentrated Fire, Grim Reaper's Sprint, other skill-increasing perks. Bad perks: Swift Learner, Mister Sandman. Do not be tempted by the prospect of extra XP, it's a waste.
Most important skills are Small Guns, Sneak and Repair. Maxing those out as soon as possible will be extremely helpful.

If you have Operation Anchorage, then doing that first will net you the Chinese Stealth Armor. I advise against doing this because the rest of the game then becomes a joke.

Fallout 3 is a vast game and I couldn't possibly explain the whole thing. See the wiki [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki] for help with its many intricacies.

Sorry for the double post.

I personally think that charisma is very important. You need a balance of skills in all bethesda games.

I've read all of your comments, and I might consider starting anew.

Maybe. I like the character I already have.

BTW, Operation: Anchorage will have enemies "my level" right?
Since no one seems to have answered this... Yeah, Anchorage scales up to a point, and then starts to drop off, I believe. I'm guessing after level 20 the enemies no longer scale with you, but they could stop before that.

Now, with everyone else weighing in on build points...

STR 4
PER 5
END 5
CHA 6
AGL 7
INT 8
LCK 5

Sneak, Repair, Small Arms

2-Black Widow (Lady Killer isn't as valuable)
3-Gun Nut
4-Educated
5-Comprehension (Save your skill books for this)
6-Toughness

Beyond that some general thoughts on perks:

Bloody Mess is mildly amusing but not really that great. The damage bonus is pretty weak.
Strong Back is very useful if you're going to be a pack mule.
Black Widow is more valuble than Lady Killer for two reasons. First, more dialog. Second, most enemies, including raiders and the like skew to more males than females.
Swift Learner (and by extension Sound Sleeper) aren't worth it because of how accessible the level cap is. (if the game was uncapped then they'd probably be extremely useful.
Gunslinger (Commando, and Sniper) were broken in one of the early patches, and may still be.
Lawbringer and Hitman are good cheap ways to generate some extra cash and karma. Lawbringer seems to be the more useful as most human enemies in the game are coded as evil.
Cannibal is a hilarious perk, but not very useful. It does offer some useful dialog at places.
Remember that some perks like Silent Running and Cyborg also increase skills.
Entomologist is usually worth taking just to deal with the Albino Rad Scorpions late in the game.

Anyway, I'm sure some of this is a rehash, but there you go.
