Well, the Fallout Mod Manager [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=640] and the Unofficial Fallout 3 patch [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3808] are musts. As is the Fallout Script Extender [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8606]

NOTE - You won't be able to sign into Games for Windows Live if you use the script extender. I personally recommend not signing into GFWL and outright removing it, since you have little to lose and so much to gain by removing GFWL.

Mods I enjoy, and recommend:
Flesh burning plasma weapons [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3321] - it makes plasma weapons more fun to use.
Greenworld [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2456] - for if you get tired of all the brown.
Enclave Commander [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1410] - Because its fun to lead your own army.
Warhammer 40k armor [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4651] - because BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! I just like it.
Enclave Commander Warhammer 40k edition [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5579] - Because, well its just pure awesome storming the White House with Space Marines on your side.

I also recommend the Games for Windows Live disabler [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1086]. After I installed it, I found that the game ran better, crashed less, and it stopped stuttering.

Thats just to start you out. I recommend looking through the top 100 lists and pick out what interests you ;)

Oh, also Ironsights [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6938].
Why wait for New Vegas to look down the ironsights of your weapons, when you can do it now!

And EVE - Energy Visuals Enhanced [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8340] - While the melting skin one above was for plasma weapons, this one is for all energy weapons, and greatly improves them all.

FOOK2 - adds TONS of new weapons and various game tweaks;

FWE - combines a whole to of useful smaller mods into one package and rmps up the difficulty to "FUCK THIS SHIT" level. Persnally - get the ReadMe for that mod, and download all the smaller mods by themselves - this way you get awesomeness, but no the terribad gameplay. Smaller mods include Sprint Mod, Bullet Time mod, Grenade Hotkey mod and tons of others.;

GreenER World - Not Green World, mind you. Both are similar in that they both add a lot of vegetation, like green trees and stuff, to the world, making it feel more alive GreenER World just looks better;

Fellout - removes the green tint from the game, and makes it look MUCH better. Just get a good nightvision mod with it, because the nights are dark as hell (at least they were the last time I checked);

More Where The came From - or something like that. Let's you expand GNR with more music, or with music of your choise (up to 100 tracks);

BABE - body replacer, the best I've seen. Replaces female bodies and clothes to make them look good. Comes with regular and butt-naked versions;

PuceMoose - not a mod, but a modder. He makes AWESOME qurst mods. He had 3 or 4 the last time I chacked, and they wee all AWESOME;

Also, you'll need a few programs to run the mods:

FOMM - Fallout Mod Manager. Helps you manage (imagine that, huh?) your mods. And it had a built-in Archive Invalidation, which you'll need to install mods properly;

FOSE - Fallout Script Extender. While not required, it makes a lot of mods function better, by adding (or "extending", if you will) new scripts. Highly recommended. It disabled GFWL, mind you, so if you didn't get all the achievement yet (if you even care about that), now would be the time to do so.

That's all I can remember that goes under "essential" section. I have like 80 more installed, but I'm not near my PC right now, so I can't list them all...

PS. Also, what the others have listed is hardly essential.

For appearance mods, you could use DIMONIZED TYPE3: Found here [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4280]. Really, you should just check out the Top 100 on Fallout 3 Nexus [http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/top/alltime.php]. You can find good mods there.

I now want to cry because all I have is a 360. I'm so jealous.

That greenworld mod is so amazing!
It is. Walking through the wasteland is an entire different experience with it. And a squad of Space Marines ;)

I kind of like Real Time Settler.
this was a very interesting and immersive mod, but unfortunately back when i tried it the raider raids on your settlement would more often than not cause the game to crash entirely.

Sure its been updated in the 6 months or more since i uninstalled fo3.

Classic power armor with the black skin is a must have, it just changes the model for the power armor to the classic fallout look and looks completely evil with the black skin texture.

M41A pule rifle was pretty fun, the rifle from aliens, few bugs with it but the sound was awsome.
